How to Install PS3 PKG Files from exFAT & NTFS USB Drives | Large 4 GB+ PKG Support!

- A major limitation of installing PKG files from a USB device on the PS3 is being forced to stick to the FAT32 file system. You typically have to take an extra step to format large drives to this, and this file system doesn't support any files larger than 4 GB in size. However thanks to a write-up posted by PSX-Place user Louay, we now have a clear cut method of installing any PKG files from exFAT or NTFS USB drives! This does not require FTP transfers, nor does it require splitting up a PKG, just copy it to the correct folder and mount it!
This method of PKG installation requires you to have either a jailbroken PS3 console running custom firmware or a console modified with PS3HEN. This video will assume you already own a modified console and have at least a basic understanding of how to navigate it. webMAN MOD and prepISO will be required in order for this to work, if you choose to follow along. Lastly, you will still need a FAT32 formatted USB drive to do the initial installations of webMAN MOD and prepISO, after that any PKG files you wish to install can be copied to an exFAT or NTFS formatted USB drive.

This quote is from the forum: "Get an NTFS drive so you can place a full, unsplit PKG on it and plug it in. Open up Irisman, hit start and Tools then File Manager. Find your PKG, press Square and choose Mount + Exit. You'll be taken back to the XMB and your PKG will show up in the Install PKG section like normal." I have done it yesterday and its much simpler. Just mount the pkg then install through xmb. When i loaded irishman again then closed it the pkg got unmounted. so no extra/ dulicate space occupied.

Omg thank you for this your videos are so helpful! I wondered why there was a "PKG" and a "packages" folder. Your how-tos are straight forward but also with enough extra detail and explanation without overdoing it. I installed hen on my ps3 and have had quite the learning curve doing everything.
I'm trying to condense my number of consoles by making them able to play games for more than one system and so now I can play most of my ps2 ganes on ps3!

If you are having trouble not seeing the Blue ray & dvd file make a new folder on your usb and call it “PKG” then put your game in the “PKG” folder and leave the “rap” in the “exdata” folder and then run the NTFS application and it should show up

Thanks again Mario I was able to install my first game on hen, there were a few hiccups but did some web searching and referred to your ' how to play ps2 games on hen' and managed to sort it out now I'm going to start buying my collections to add to my ps3.
I'm going to leave some tips based on my experience, keep in mind I'm still fresh to this.
1) My first issue was my pc dvd drive was busted so I had to use another to burn my ps2 game into iso format onto my usb. I used imgburn but my game (valkyrie proflie 2) is over 4gb and will only go into '.100 file' format, you need to format your usb to exFAT or NTFS to get iso format on your usb just like mario did here. Just a minor issue lol but thats what helped me.
2) Next is prepiso not reading my usb that I format to NTFS with my game pkg. Like mario said you have to restart your ps3, I did five times still didn't read it so I reformatted it to exFAT and the file came up I don't know if it was 6th time a charm or because I reformatted it, either way don't give up too soon.
3) Another issue I had was the raps file needed to license the game, I didn't know where or how to get it, Mario said he had a video for it but didn't know which. But its very simple if you watch his video ruclips.net/video/Syy6HyJo8pQ/видео.html&ab_channel=MrMario2011 go through the PS2 Classics GUI and once you create a pkg it will create a rap file for you open ps2classics_GUI_2.2.3>scetool>RAPS and your raps for games are there just make your 'exdata' folder on your usb copy your rap file into it launch your game and it should work.
4)Like mario said some ps2 games run poorly so you may need a PS2 config file. I downloaded a pkg file from github.com/aldostools/webMAN-MOD/releases it contains Ps2 config for most if not all ps2 games to help them run better not all ps2 games require one. The ps2 config pkg file should look something like this 'PS2CONFIG_20220320.pkg' just install like Mario installed the games and when you launch your game it should auto select the right config from what I read online so don't quote me.
5) finally the most important imo, after I done everything I launched my game from the xmb I played for 30 mins then my ps3 overheated. Apparently webman doesn't recognise you playing the game when you launch from the xmb so the fan doesn't kick in to keep the ps3 cool which is a must when playing ps2 games because it heats the ps3 up a lot when playing them. for reference to this issue look here www.psx-place.com/threads/is-it-safe-to-run-ps2-games-on-ps3.24963/ after checking psx-place it was recommend to keep the fan speed at a manual 40-50% I keep mine at 40% and played my game again, it stayed warm and I was playing up to an hour so this made a huge difference, yeah the fan may be a bit louder than usual but I didn't bother me whats most important is the ps3 not overheating while playing ps2 games. So at 5:17 I kept mine at manual and changed it to 40% saved and restarted the ps3, depending how hot it is you can increase the speed to help keep the ps3 cool.
Again I'm new to this, far from an expert but hope this helps anyone with similar issues.

Anyone having issues with the blu ray not popping up needs to make sure they have the right type of usb. (NTFS, exFAT)
If thats not the issue, make sure you put the pkg, download file into a folder on the root of the usb called "PKG"

I've been using IrisMan to transfer them to my ps3 and then installing them, but this will save a lot of time. Thanks Mr. Mario, another awesome video. When I see them, it's on a sunday morning so sunday quickly became one of my favorite days hahaha
That's what I've been a bit confused with over comments saying to use IRISMAN. From what I know, IRISMAN requires you to transfer the PKG from your external to internal, then install it. This method installs it directly from the external drive.

@@MrMario2011 Yeah, my method for it was to transfer it through IrisMan off of my ntfs USB drive and then install it. I've only really used that method because it was the only one I could find at the time. I also have webman installed but just for the fan adjusting options and I like how clean the display is for the ps3 games, but this has made me interested in seeing what other tools there are that work with webman.

After successfully installing many games using this method,I installed a large 18gb game in .pkg file format from an external NTFS drive after it finished installing ,the console rebooted itself and I got a message saying "The system software cannot be run correctly. "Press the PS button to try restart the system."
"If the system cannot be restarted, you must reinstall the system software."
Restarting didn't work, so I ended up having to restart the PS3 In safe mode and choosing option #3 -Restore File System .Luckily that worked and I didn't loose any of my data other than the webman Mod app that I had to reinstall that again.Just putting this out there in case it happens to anyone else.

Not seeing anything under webMAN games folder beyond the setup icon (no other folders below as seen at 9:56). Latest Evilnat on 4.89, with latest multiman version :(
all you gotta do is enter webman setup and press x on "config webman" then the same screen that the fans config appear, will appear then on the left corner click games, there will be the pkg file.

For NTFS drives use Irisman. Open Irisman -> Start button -> File Manager -> Ntfs0 (your usb drive)

i have a question, when i went thru webman games folder, there are only webman setup option and nothing else. Yours have a ps3, ps2, and so on under it. How do you fix that?
Dont know who this would help but it helped me in 2024 , if you are not seeing your files on the external then it means u need to format it in EXFAT NOT NFTS this solved my problem.

@@medinabillyclients The issue is mostly with new harddrives or drives, they use a different type of format.
1. Go on data management on your windows computer and click on disk management on the side.
2. Look for your hdd or usb drive.
3. Right click on it
4. If it's in GBT format, you're gonna have to reformat it to MBR.

An easy work around if you can’t get this method to work. If you have Irishman use the root menu in Irishman by pressing select and start together then copy your games from ntfs drive package folder to hdd0 drive package folder. Then go back to package manager and download the pkg.
When I try and install a PKG it just freezes Edit I fixed it you go into webman set up and disable auto PKG install

I’ve seen your other tutorial for installing package files and was wondering, is there an easy way to transfer all the RAP files for games at once so I don’t have to launch every game I install before removing the usb drive?
You could FTP them over to the "exdata" folder on your internal HDD.

So I have a weird problem. I have followed this tutorial before and was able to install two PS2 titles with this method. Now I am back for a third PS2 game install. I seem to have successfully installed the game, but unlike last time, no game icon shows up in the games section:S I have re-installed once already because I thought I might have missed a step, but I still can't see the game anywhere. Any idea of what's going on?
EDIT: So the problem was that I was an idiot...I apparently accidentally installed the new PS2 game over one of my previous installs, that's why it looked like there was no new game appearing in my list. Welp, time to re-install both games now XD.

Soooo Know this is a bit late but love the video MrMario2011 keep it up.
I was having the issue with the hardrive only showing one PKG at a single time. I was on Exfat and copied all files at once over to the HD that was only letting me see one at a time. I went back and formatted to NTFS and copied each PkG over one at a time not selecting them all at once but one by one in to the PKG folder now my DVD folder finds all my PKG all the time no more issues.
Can you explain how do you fixed it ? I’m having the same problem :(

Hey man, great video. I'm having trouble with a particular PKG file that results in an error message with my PS# immediately freezing after the beep once the BD file is mounted. Would love your help in figuring out what's going on. Can I fix this or is the file just corrupted? This only started after updating to HFW 4.88
Edit: I tried it with other pkg files and mounting their BD files seem to have the same effect; the ps3 freezes after the beep.
Does HFW 4.88 not support doing any of these things?

Will there be issue if there are multiple partitions on the drive? I've follwed the instructions but it won't find the PKG files :(
I have an external HDD with 3 partitions on it, I just put all the games I wanted into the folder and they were found. So I don't think it matters, just make sure the folder is in uppercase and not mixed or lower PKG. Hope this helps
I had a problem getting the nfts to show up but it worked. I then formated it for something else and I wanted to use it again. I had the problem again but then I realized it wouldn't show up because the USB had to be plugged in precisely. Writing this so I don't forget.

If anyone has any trouble with finding your package file in the Blu-ray folder after running prepISO I have a trick. I originally formatted my usb to NTFS and added my package file in a folder which was called PKG and attempted to load it via prepISO but it would never show up in the Blu-ray folder. I changed my usb from NTFS to exFat and luckily it worked. Hope this helps 😁
