C-mom Sorin, you know why they didn’t diagnose the problem, because the mainboard is about 750$. They make about 500$ on it or more by replacing it. Or they get the customer to buy another laptop. Either wait they make big money on the situation. Thank God for shops like yours! I just wish I could ship my Acer Nitro5 to you , but I’m in California USA 😢 and the local shops to me want 250-300$ to fix and 100$ for just diagnosis and shipping etc. My late mothers laptop. Just died one day. Cost her 650$ used, and she never even gamed on it. Just internet browsing paying bills. Hope one day I can figure out the problem and bring it back to life . Mainly for the sentimental reasons.

So what I did, decades ago, having the same problem with my daughter's computer, at the time it was not laptops, but a big box with Win 98, knowing nothing about, I brought a book about computers, and learned. Then The first laptop I repaired I had it in pieces in a trash, with power connector having burned the mother board. Also I had built three computers before for me and my two daughters, and repaired some others for my students at school in my classroom. Sorin is the channel I chosen to learn more about laptops, you can go to other and older videos explaining other issues that can have happened on your mother's computer. In my experiment, it's rare that a computer is totally unrepairable when everything is clean on the motherboard. So opening it gives you a look to some basic things, clean, verify screen, battery, keyboard, power connectors, liquid damage, temperature sensor, buttons, SD card reader broken, power button... And after , shorts, power not present, are also basic things, I learned with Sorin , and I love how he explain things, and also the idea of saving the machine from death😺

I did a test... I added caps on a motherboard where ever I found a place to put. Before and after. Bench mark .. cpu performance was 2.4% greater. Mofets temp was down by 1 degree. Cpu temp down also 1 degree . .. I removed the caps and tested 5 times. And the result was the same more caps seemed to improve slightly. Strange to me . Seems like less ripple on coils.

Working thru the problems to manage a working unit for delivery back to a customer. Thank you Soren for a nice lesson, and where as a beginner at repair, I was always curious as to the ribbon cables to their plug in connector....would I damage or not reach secure connection? Also, where dust might be causing fan and overheat issue by blocked air flow?
As for the manufacture, there seems to be a huge disconnect as product to any repair. Across the price range of units.
At my workshop, I seem to be mostly at repair of cars. Key problems, mechanical repair as failed parts. But so often, solder repair is a required need to electronics. Chance stuff like a bit of metal dropping into the cigarette lighter and causing a huge short with melted wires, internal to the dash. A metal bit from a dash cam power 12v plug in. Stuff like a drop or two of coffee that was a spill to a fire wire cord end. I really enjoy the various problems that can be solved and the interesting review of devices. *Washington State, US. M.

I'd say the manufacturer didn't even bother diagnosing as it's not economical for them to do so. Is that a wasteful practice, yes in my opinion it is, but from their (manufacturers) perspective they can't and wont generate any revenue unless they force the owner to buy a replacement MB or entire new laptop. It's what keeps this fake economy going. If anyone of you are old enough to remember prior to 1924, the average lifespan of a light bulb was around 2,500 - 3,000 hours, heck the Centennial Light Bulb is still burning today and it was first installed back in 1901. Anywho, in December 1924, a global organization known as the Phoebus Cartel hatched a secret plan to increase sales by bringing the average bulb's lifespan down to just 1,000 hours. This began one of the first known examples of planned obsolescence. This hasn't changed to this day, in fact if you pay attention all electronic devices die after the warranty expires. It's not a coincidence, its planned so they can sell you new sh*t! Anyway, nice work Sorin, good job mate.

As a Sony and B&O trained engineer i often despair at the lack of fault finding skills of some
    manufacturers service tech's.
They must cause a lot of customers to avoid buying that brand again when an expensive item
is declared unrepairable just after the warranty expires and the fault is just a shorted component
that can be be found very easily.
Perhaps Sorin needs to offer them some training in how to find a shorted capacitor.
This customer is lucky to have an experienced tech that knows how to fault find.

Don't subestimate the fact of using thermal camera specially when you are working with high end notebooks, where temperature is critical.
If you don't have a clue where the problem is and try to find the hot capacitor using any other older way, you'll start the motherboard and in few seconds many things will be hot, making thing more difficult.

Can you rank laptop brands based on the number of malfunctions?
And it seems that there are a very high number of malfunctions with Acer! Because there are about 10 videos where we see the Acer Nitro 5 model.
I think the reason for the high rate of Acer laptop malfunctions is the lack of quality components. Gaming laptops have higher power supply and these motherboards may not have the capability to handle so much energy!

Gaming laptops are the problem, too much power in too little space. Working from the factory on their limit. With time some dust inside overheat one of the mosfets and you get a dead laptop. Maybe if you open and clean it ones in 6 month it will live longer ??

    • @hackeratore
      @hackeratore Год назад +1

It's not really guessing, you can get there by logic. Like in this instance, if you see that the 19V power rail is shorted, you can THEORETICALLY put up to 19 in there, assuming nothing else is blown down the board, but that's not a good idea, because it's not necessary. If something more is wrong in the board and you accidentally send 19v to the CPU, I think you can guess what will happen. At least you will see some funny smoke.
What he does here is to inject a really low voltage into the rail, you can actually do it everywhere on that same rail, doesn't matter if it's the current resistor or one of the caps across the board. Of course you want to do it after the mosfets because, assuming they are doing their job, they will cut the power if they detect a short and you know, you actually use this technique to find shorts so it would be pointless. The key here is to use current instead. You limit it, ideally you will use only the amount that you need, and different parts of the board will have different tollerances, but just make sure to use enough to spot the hot point without burning the layer of the board and you will be good to go.

Repairing electronics is very satisfying for me but i'm wondering... What's happening with every manufacturer? Failing capacitors, transistors, integrated circuits, you name it... Thankfully i can repair my own stuff, otherwise i don't know how many hundreds of dollars worth of electronics i would have thrown in the garbage, but what about everyone else? Manufacturers need to stop disrespecting customers like that and should design stuff with proper components, not garbage designed to fail in a couple months. And i say this even if the repairs bring me money, it just isn't right.

One thing beats my imagination. An HP Laptop Goes off by itself and never woke up. All the necessary voltages were present. No heat is coming from anywhere and still the laptop will not turn on.

Hi Sorin, I did a stupid thing last week to my Acer Nitro5. I was working with stepper motors and an Arduino stepper motor shield connected to a USB port, and inserted one of the stepper driver boards in the wrong way around, as soon as I turned on my bench power supply to the motor shield my laptop died instantly, I had sent 25v at 3A down the enable pin of the driver into the USB port😥. The laptop would not turn on again, the bios tries to boot it but can't. I could not be without a laptop so bought a new Nitro 5. I would like to try and repair it do you have any suggestion's to point me in the right direction for diagnosing the problem. I am reasonably competent at electronics to the level of designing and manufacturing my own circuit boards, but as for diagnosing failed laptops my knowledge is limited. I would appreciate any advice you can offer me. Keep up with your videos, they are helping me to advance my knowledge of electronics. Thanks.

probably the pch has to be replaced as the data lines from the usb ports, are going straight to the pch
