my youth orchestra ust played the second movement at our concert earlier today, and it was so much fun! would highly reccomend and it is such an amazing symphony.
@@paulprocopolis Your absolutely right. Rachmaninoff went through a temporary failure to reap rich success following his symphony no. 2 and all the other brilliant works he did thereafter! One may say that failure is the stepping stone to success!
Oh my. Well, overlooking that, Borodin had a 5/4 2d mvt too in his Second. There are some obvious Borodin inspirations here along with Rimsky et al but so what ? Beautiful music.
The audience at the premiere of Gliere's Symphony No. 1 must have lacked discernment, to put it mildly. Here, with the symphonic debut of a young talented composer, they should have recognized that this was something special.

What an amazing work of art! I can't imagine why this was not well received at its premiere.
Neither can I - but then again Rachmaninoff's first symphony was also a failure on its first performance!
Like the law, the Public is an @$$ at any given moment, with possible later regrets.

@@paulprocopolis It's generally thought that Rach's first symphony flopped because the conductor (Glazunov) was very drunk on the night.
I have heard this on a CD many times recently and fell in love with this music.
Tanejew clearly taught him someone good counterpoint. Orchestration also already works really well. I especially like the second 5/4 movement.
It was my favourtie!
@@jakehouston3377 -- True....but nothing compared to his Second Symphony COLOSSUS!

@@steveegallo3384I love all 3 Gliere Symphonies but you are right, #2 is a Cololossus. And Downes does it so well.
@@gregorypalmer5403 -- Cheers, my friend! Switzerland and Waldhaus Sils-Maria must be cooling off around now....Enjoy! Regards from Acapulco!

El Cuarto movimiento me recuerda harto a Tchaikowsky (Sobre todo el 4° Mov.)..
