There's so many niceties of Craig's approach that you immediately notice when it's someone else: how close he sits to the guest, how engaged he is with them, how well he keeps the crowd energized, etc. He didn't seem to have any nervous ticks while hosting (Drew has his hand up the entire time while giving the monologue, and repeatedly smacks the desk during emails). It's no secret Craig used the awkward, dead spaces in between moments to his advantage, often stewing in them purposely with a mischievous smile or sighing as if he had nothing else. Without that approach, Drew has to dance around those lulls and it ends up being... actually kind of awkward. No disrespect to Drew, he did a great job being funny and genuine, but boy it really highlights what a maestro Craig was.
To be fair to Drew, Craig had many years of interviews under his belt by then and had time to master his craft. I'm sure Drew could make a good show too but filling in is just a heavy thing to do. He's nervous too but its not really telling. I do wonder how much influence he had on the monologue. I do think Drew can be a good host though. Probably more interesting than Corden. Also I think the biggest difference is Geoff. The new dude just doesn't have it as the character he's setting up.
If Drew Carey went into the talk show business he would have kept his talk show the same format like the same theme song, the house band, and even with some changes like the set and segment changes, the format would mostly be the same from it’s debut in the late 80’s early 90’s

It would make that show more fun. You know, like Bob got to do, but with Drew's sense of humor.

Preferred User they're just different skillsets. Drew really grew into the role of a price is right host where warmth and fun energy are the key. Barker left big shoes of endearing and genuineness.

Would this originally have been broadcast over 1 hour? So in the US, normally 40% of an hour-long show is ads/commercials? It must be very annoying to watch TV in real time, or maybe you are used to it and think nothing of it. In Ireland, it's a maximum of 12 mins of ads per hour.
LOL, who watches live TV? I download the torrent so I don't have any commercials. Must be so annoying to watch TV in Ireland with 12 minutes of ads per hour!!!!
I remember "The Ghoul" on Saturday nights while in college. The movies he showed were not that good but we watched them to see "The Ghoul." I think he got kicked off because he blew up a live frog on one of his shows.
Unpopular opinion here: I think Drew did a better job on TLLS than Craig did on TPIR. They're both outside their comfort zones in terms of scripting and show structure, but Drew's polished act, great audience connection and warm personality expands better into being a talk show host than Craig's dry wit, flawless comedic timing and improvisational mastery does to running a game show.
Lorain used to have a bar called Ghoulardi's where the Ghoul used to show up and do his shtick. Did plenty of shows with my dad at Ghoulardi's. I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it.
at about 20 minutes into this i couldn’t take one more forced cackle laugh... once he got his feet under him in this role he might do great... i do live talk broadcast radio... I have an on line archive of those shows... oddly, the first year isn’t there...

It's about the same as Ireland, this clip has been edited like +M Sj said. It's normally between 12-15 mins depending how long the episode runs for.
