  • Today we visit what is likely to be the most famous Lophophora williamsii locality of all, and expose the impact of that notoriety on this magical ecosystem. We'll also visit the Peyote Capital of the World, Real de Catorce. We'll also see some incredible neighbors of Lophophora williamsii, like Ariocarpus, Turbinicarpus and others.

    Great videos! I really appreciate your emphasis on conservation. I spent a lot of time in the field in southwest Tamaulipas from about 2000 to 2009. I also got into parts of Nuevo Leon and San Luis Potosi sometimes and it is a beautiful area. I was interested in herpetology, but I saw lots of cacti. Everything (flora and fauna) is under attack from unscrupulous collectors these days. It is an international crisis. I don’t know if the people who insist on keeping exotic plants and animals really realize the damage done to our vanishing wild places.

      Thank you and thanks for watching! I can only imagine what these places looked like just 20 years ago. I’m really wanting to visit Tamaulipas too!

    Hi Manuel. B4 I came across your channel, I wasn't aware abt wat's happening to d cacti population in d wild. I now do appreciate very much your efforts to educate d world on conservation of cacti. I guess humans r really a destructive force of nature! 😞

      Hey there! I’m glad you’ve learned to appreciate the wild. We’re a part of it and some of us have lost touch of that fact living in big cities. We can certainly can be a destructive force, but can also be just as strong a force for good 🌵💚 Thanks for watching

    That's some amazing stone masonry in Real de Catorce. I'd want to visit just to see the architecture. I really appreciate when people build with stone.

    How often it rains in a rain season at such places? Every week?

    • @RareCactus
      @RareCactus  7 месяцев назад

      Sometimes once a month only a couple of months a year, some years they get no rain at all 😯

    a dedicated lophophora nursery should be established to take the pressure off habitat plants, 10 acres of pure lophs and arios should do it. petition the local town govt, could be done by volunteers and almost no cost. the town is making money from tourists, take advantage of that.

    • @RareCactus
      @RareCactus  9 месяцев назад

      I agree, and as counterproductive as it sounds, it’s illegal to grow Lophophora in Mexico just like it is in the US. Our laws are made to cater to drug users instead of protecting nature. It’s really pathetic.

      @@RareCactus green light the project as a nature reserve, it's not about producing drugs. the tourist volume will double, jobs and $$ coming in should be obvious advantages for any elected official. persistence pays off.
