When I was going in to land completing my check ride, the tower told me to report a 5 mile base, so I started flying to come in on a base. The DPE questioned me, saying I needed to come in on a 45 to a downwind. I told him the tower said come in on a base and report 5 miles. So at 5 miles I reported and the tower cleared me to land. The DPE, smiled and said, anyone is susceptible to expectation biased. I passed.

I trained at an airport that had two identical parallel runways, 31R/31L. Tower always issued right traffic to 31R and left traffic to 31L. One day, while doing pattern work, on about my 7th circuit, I got a BIG lesson in expectation bias, I was issued a 31R departure with left closed traffic as my takeoff clearance. My expectation bias prevented me from catching the "left" and of course I promptly took off and made a right crosswind. Tower had to take some action to prevent a conflict with another aircraft entering the pattern for right traffic and I, of course, felt like a complete idiot. So expectation bias is a very real thing and can lead to fatal crashes. Beware.

Seven straight! Our airport almost always sends traffic to the long runway - 6/24. I was cleared to 31, confirmed that, and immediately turned toward and taxied toward runway 6. Ground control questioned me and I realized what I'd done. Dang.

7/7. I can definitely share a time when I goofed up taxiing... I was landing at a Class C airport which I was unfamiliar with. I was using my iPad as an EFB but I didn't pull up my taxi diagram prior to landing to have it ready. After I taxied clear of the runway, the ground controller gave me taxi instructions and I had no idea where to go because I didn't have the taxi diagram up, and in the heat of the moment I was struggling to get it out because I was trying to move fast. In the meantime I was obviously not moving. The ground controller came back on the radio and said "you can't sit there, I need you to get moving", and I said okay but I still didn't have the taxi diagram out so I stayed still as I was scrambling to get organized. That was the point where I should have simply asked for progressive taxi. But what happened instead was the controller lost all patience with me and gave me progressive taxi without me even asking. To me that was the ultimate embarrassment because at least if I had asked for it myself it would've shown that I had the situational awareness and presence of mind to realize that I was in over my head and needed help. But the controller had to step in of her own accord. Believe me, I haven't made the same mistake since.

7/7 so far. My runway incursion was minor enough but embarrassing none-the-less. Classic case of doing training at small airport and transitioning to large class c. After landing I took an exit taxiway that was greater than 90 degrees which was actually an exit from the opposite landing direction. No harm but then realized why they had so many runway exits.

Thankfully, this has only happened once to me. Ground control gave me taxi instructions to the active runway at my home airport. I knew which runway was active, so I had an expectation of my taxi route. I actually READ BACK the taxi instructions correctly, and proceeded to taxi the route I was expecting, rather than the route I actually read back. Thankfully, the controller was patient and changed my taxi routing to match the one I was errantly already on. It was embarrassing, but a perfect example of expectation bias.

One thing I've learned as a very junior pilot, which I am, is to always be honest with yourself and that's number one. I've learned a couple other very important things, never just go for it, never be afraid to ask and it's ok to humble yourself and admit you dont have all the answers. That guy that you know that has 40,000,000 hours of flying, he doesnt know it all either. Dont be afraid to lean on people who have been flying longer than you but also always verify what they're saying, they can be wrong also and you dont want to accept what they tell you without finding out for yourself, besides, looking it up will reenforce what they told you or correct it and I promise when you read "that chapter" you'll go deeper than that and you'll learn more than you were looking for.
Early in my flight training I was on down wind and was told to extend my down wind so I did. The tower cleared me to turn right base to final and I was cleared to land as number 2. I immediately turned into base and went head on with that same number 1 landing aircraft and forced him to make an evasive turn to the West where he had to fly under another aircraft on the opposite side. I called to the tower to tell them I had a near miss and it was of course my fault. The tower was super cool with me and from then on I ended all of my calls with "student pilot" lol

7/7. My story is when training last year, ground gave me taxi instructions to a different runway than I expected. I read back the instructions then taxied to the runway I expected to take off on. I did the run up and started the takeoff checklist which starts with “verify runway”. I turned to my CFI and said,”I went to the wrong runway”. He laughed and said he was just looking to see how long I would go before catching it. Good lesson learned.

Messed up on landing... must have not had my "heels on the floor" and plane was swerving left on landing during a touch n go. Since I had already given full power, I decided this bird is going to fly even though I was headed in the grass. Took off to the left, shakily, and then lined back up with runway and continued climb. Thought my next landing would be my last, but decided to "get back on the horse" and made 6 more touch n gos. Huge lesson learned with heels on the floor.

Luckily, I always hold short a few feet prior to the hold short marking and didn’t taxi close to it at all before ATC said “NO NO NO, THAT WAS NOT FOR YOU!” I was so embarrassed! I appreciate this so much and wish I would have seen it last week. A few days ago I was taking a solo as a student at KLNK. I normally always use 17/35 which is the short runway used by a lot of student pilots, close to my ramp, with nice big run up areas. This day 17/35 was under maintenance and they were sending everyone over to the commercial side of the field to 18/36 via relatively complicated instructions compared to what I was used to and no runways -- not to mention it was a beautiful day and everyone was over there. A real wake up to be prepared to alternative routes on the taxi way.

The controller came back with a very disappointed tone “59Q, where are you?” Of course by that time I had crossed 24L without clearance. There have been many rule changes since then to help avoid this, but the time she gave me in the ‘time out’ box helped me think about what I had done😮

A few years ago I flew in to Renton, Washington (KRNT). Renton Ground told me "taxi Alpha to the FBO, past the 737s". At the time Boeing were having supply issues on 737 engines and the ramp was full of partially-assembled 737s, so "past the 737s" didn't exactly narrow it down. I pleaded "unfamiliar!" and asked for progressive taxi.

7 for 7. Thank you Jason and Magda. Expectation bias is a real thing. I vividly remember an experience years go with my CFI. I called for taxi clearance on the ramp on the north side of the field. Ground control issued a common taxi clearance to the runway using a route found only on the south side of the field. I read it back verbatim. Just before commencing the taxi, my instructor queried me on the routing issued by ground. Reviewing my taxi diagram on the toke, I realized this wasn’t going to work given our location on the field. Another call to ground and we received amended taxi instructions. My instructor smiled and pointed out I just fell victim to expectation bias. It was a teachable moment I’ll always remember. By the way, this happened at our home field.

7 for 7 On my first attempt at my x-country solo, x-winds got me bad and when I flared, it blow me off centerline and I didn't know how to react to it and I ended up going through the grass. Luckily I did not prop strike or flip or get hurt, or hurt anybody else. They sent the fire truck out and everything. It was very embarrassing. It almost ended my want to to continue flying. What bothered me the most, is that when I arrived at my 1st destination, the controllers read the winds to me 3 different times. They were trying their best to give me, a student pilot, a warning, and I never picked up on it. I was so focused on doing everything else during the landing, flaps, airspeed, altitude, enter the pattern correctly, etc. that I never really heard their warnings. I was at my Piper Warriors max crosswind component. I learned a lot that day.

Since most of the smaller airfields here have not just unpaved surfaces, but pretty easy taxiways that lead straight from the “aprons” (i.e. areas in front of clubhouses) to the ends of the runways AND I’m not yet that far into my training to visit bigger, towered airports with multiple taxi-/runways, it’s pretty difficult to seriously f things up on the ground. The only thing I can think of is a near-miss during my NVFR training: while most of the planes stayed around Budaörs Airfield (LHBS) for traffic circuits, my instructor got us into Liszt Ferenc International (LHBP) for the excercise - best aviation experience to date 🥹🤩
Anyway, coming back to Budaörs we’ve “jumped the queue” for a straight-in landing and after landing I was hesitant to leave the (grass) runway (with only sparse edge lighting) looking for the taxiway and my instructor had to step in and agressively turn us off the runway to prevent the plane behind us from needing to go around 😬
Also back when I was actively flying in the sim (mostly on the VATSIM network) without geo-referenced charts and a scratchpad to take notes on, I would occasionally get lost or (relying on my short-term memory) read back taxi instructions incorrectly - luckily without any serious consequences (like runway incursion)😅

This one time there was a 737 being pushed back onto the taxiway I've always been given and tower gave me taxi instructions for the parallel taxiway to get around him. Sure enough I went on the wrong one anyway. Tower caught that immediately and told me to get back onto the correct taxiway. Guess they were prepared for me screwing this up...

7 for 7: there are 2 taxi ways besides each other to runway 22. C and T1. I usually take C but they gave me T1 and I took C accidently. C was clear and no one on it at the time. Will have to pay even more attention.

Two things: this doesn't just relate to taxiing. Head down time. I flew to KCGZ yesterday for "cheap"er fuel. There were SO many airplanes (on my tablet) close to the airport I had trouble deciphering whether they were in the air, or on the ground, how high they were, plus multiple instrument practice approaches inbound, etc. I just threw the tablet on the seat and started scanning the area. Did I mention there were skydivers in the air, too?... I found one plane way low in the pattern and followed him in while keeping an eye out for the inbound ILS and the divers. White knuckles! the lesson? Keep your head out of the cockpit!!
Number two: I don't think AVARE gets enough love. It is an open android app that is free. But, don't let that fool you. It is very powerful. Charts, plates, ADS-B traffic in, WX, flight planning... If you don't want to spend the extra money for an Ipad and Foreflight, try an android tablet and Avare. You will not be disappointed. But, remember to keep your head outside the aircraft....7/7

"...taxi to 17 via Alpha..." As I turned to taxi to 35, I felt my instructor's gaze, and I turned to him as he said, "Do we still plan on taking off from 17? HAHAHA. Oops....I was SO used to using 35 as that's what we had been using for the past several lessons, that I went were I had expected to be told to go.

7/7. On my first solo XC at KPUB I got turned around on a taxi way and turned the wrong way down the wrong taxi way. Called ground told them I thought I might have screwed up and asked for progressive taxi back to the run up area to get out of there.

7 for 7 I knew these tendencies existed; I just didn't know what they were called. It's easier to recognize them now.

One week in 7/7 for the month! Next challenge: week two aim for 7 of 7. It's always a good reminder in this video and I'll try my best this year to avoid complacency and expectation bias and confirmation bias.
One question, what apps do you use on your tablet to display the information about your airport runways and other aviation related information? I'm still with the pencil and paper and thinking about considering including at least one technology assistance besides my phone saved for emergency calls and general mapping.
