It was a funny video! Keep making these from time to time. I liked the different stereotypes of Germany especially Baden Wurttemberg. I'm guessing that some of my ancestors transferred to me some stubbornness.
As a Texan, so much of Texas culture suddenly makes so much more sense to me. I knew we were heavily influenced by German immigration, and a lot of city and street names are all in German, but the DIRECTNESS with the cake offering TikTok killed me. Texans are so direct, we come across to other Americans as being almost confrontational. Like, why would I beat around the bush and play all these weird, passive-aggressive games?! And yes, I can see how Bavaria is the Texas of Germany LOL.
Can you do more of these videos? They're fun! Also, being in Alaska now. It was really weird to find that servers do get paid the states minimum wage + tips. It's refreshing to see that and I wish the rest of the US would take up on that.
@@DeutschFuerEuch the cost of living here is much higher, but I also think Alaskans generally appreciate hard work. The service industry is no exception to that. I believe Alaska is actually considered the hardest working state in the US. There are a lot of union workers (construction, railroaders, etc) and a lot of people work up north on the pipelines. It's a richer state that gives. Might also be because there's less people and they can do that! 😁
Here's a socialization tip from an Arab (we hold the world title on this one): people tend to pretend to refuse something they want because in that same culture people (kind of) feel they need to offer things they might not really want to give, just to be polite. You refuse and see if it's a genuine offer or simple politeness. The only issue happens when people from two different cultures interact. Loved the video, keep 'em coming.
Hahaha. I think it's just this weird thing people have about being "the best" at something, so anyone who claims the same thing must be shot down. I wouldn't know, I don't like any beer c:
When I first arrived in Prague I went out drinking with some colleagues, and naturally had a pretty bad hangover the next day. I made a joke to my boss that I must be allergic to Czech beer, since I felt bad the next day after drinking 3 or 4 litres. My boss nodded soberly - "Yeah, could be."
Love this type of video! Definitely, you should do them more. Is a breather from the usually learning type videos tha you do. I actually would add cronstructive criticism, stare and obey all rules to german steretypes. Still love germany!!!!
Yeah, that should be the priority. I think the bad pay developed out of people's friendliness to give something extra for good service. Which is a lovely gesture and I don't like that it gets exploited, but yay capitalism.
@@DeutschFuerEuch HAHA, I wondered whether I should add perkele after torille because I feel it is the quintessential Finnish word. But then I'm not a quintessential Finn but a heathen Hurri 🤣🤣. Hurri is a derogatory word used for us Swedish speaking Finns that we have coopted. I can't remember exactly but I believe that origin of the word comes from Russians living in Helsinki in the late 1800's trying to say "hur sa" which is not used these days but means "excuse me" as in could you repeat what you said. Have you ever studied Swedish I have followed you channel for many years, I seem to recall that besides your native German and Russian you know at least some French and Japanese. Swedish grammar is quite straightforward and I think pronunciation should not pose any problems.
@@Swedishfinnpolymath I have dabbled in Swedish a bit, I did Duolingo for about a month a couple of years ago and I love the sound of Skandinavian languages. Icelandic makes me cry whenever I hear it just because it sounds so beautiful (not an exaggeration). Also, I can sing "Vandraren" from beginning to end, mostly phonetically though. So there's that.
There is also the term of "Fachchinesisch". Fachsprache is the German word for jargon: so a system of specialized terms for a particular field. And Chinesisch ist Chinese. So I guess Fachchinesisch is used as an exaggeration: It's not just some jargon, it's jargon and also in Chinese, so you have basically no chance of understanding. And I guess there were even moments in history where people really had such a problem. I listened to a podcast the other day about a ship disaster and the ship was commaned by Belgians who spoke Flemish while a lot of the soldiers on the ship were Americans (I think). So one of the persons pointed out that the Belgians probably not just shouted their commands in Flemish while the ship sank, they probably also used naval jargon.
Just stereotypically saying, Nordrhein-Westfalen people are direct and sometimes a bit rude. However, when you're direct and rude to them, they whine about it a lot. So, they think they could be direct and rude to you, but when you're direct to them, they start crying, really. LOL. But they're just generalizations to have a good laugh at. It all boils down to every single person. I'm a Latino and some of my traits are stereotypical and some others are not. For example: I'm really passionate and wear my heart on my sleeve sometimes (just like the Latino stereotype), but I'm super direct, which sometimes comes up as rude (not stereotypically Latino). This is true to most people.
I commented a couple of times but it seems it's not showing up 🤔 Anyways, I loved the idea. I find memes very interesting, but I don't always understand the german ones. If you could do one video going through some of those 🙃
I know this is like 3 months old but western Germany might be Catholic due to the proximity to France which I believe is predominantly Catholic... I might disagree with you on this, Katja. Most Germans are not direct and they're super politically correct. Once, a girl was talking to me about her Spanish "friends with benefits" and she told me how the guy treated her and all; she proceeded to show me a pic of him. I said to her, "He seems like a terrible person and he is ugly AF. But since you have fun with him, it's all up to you". She said that I was rude for saying he was ugly. I was like, "WTF? Germans were supposed to be direct". I wouldn't have said that he was ugly if, according to her description, the guy had treated her a bit better.
Directness and rudeness are two very different things at times and Germans, like any other group, don't universally agree on where that boundary is, of course 🤷♀️ telling someone that a person they are dating is fugly lacks a certain understanding of how human psychology works IMHO. Of course she wasn't going to like that 😀 we're not aliens.
@@DeutschFuerEuch, well, she "broke up" with the guy later on and said l was right: he was a bad person and fugly. Lol. She thought l was a light-hearted Latino that would be super patient to her tantrums. Lol. The thing is that l gave her an inch and she took a mile, so l think that was the biggest issue.
