The 2019 Toyota 4Runner remains pretty much unchanged from the previous model year, except for the addition of the Nightshade trim. This trim is largely an appearance package for the 7-seater Limited model. The Nightshades adds touches of black chrome, larger black wheels and some unique interior trimmings.
This body on frame SUV is built for consumers that want to a mid-size SUV with some true off raiding capability. But for everyday use, is there any reason to take this 4Runner over the Highlander? Max Landi from The Drive Guyde finds out.

I think you are missing the point completely why people buy 4 Runners. There are many that prefer tried and true to new and untested, another words, rock solid reliability when you spend big dollars for cars. Example, you like the Volvos in your reviews, I guarantee that the no nonsense 4.0 liter six in 4 runner will outlive by 300,000 miles the turbo supercharged fours in volvos that will have problems at 50,000 miles. It is why 4 runners sell at their highest volumes ever, regardless of how old school the interior may look. For some use of muscle memory for buttons is preferable to all digital functions and automatics with strange shift levers and even stranger shift action.

Paul M This!! I’ve seen Volvo’s break down constantly when used off road. A real SUV, versus a car based crossover.

I know you posted this two years ago but this is so on point, Paul! Just the shifter muscle memory alone is a fine issue you raise. I can't stand these new shifters where you push it forward to go in reverse or where you turn a dial. Just so unnatural to this 45 year old codger. LOVE ME A 4RUNNER! Worth every penny and it has very sloooooooow depreciation.

You forget why people buy 4RUNNERs, I am on my 5th Toyota 4Runner and my 4th Limited currently a 2015 and I am thinking about the 2019 Nightshade Edition. The 4RUNNERs I have had never let me down, not in any of the driving situations I have put them, snow, sand or mud. Very reliable and very safe.

"Built for the fans." Kind of like Jeep Wrangler. FYI the 4Runner was the very first vehicle to be called a SUV. Also what I like about it is that it is built on a FRAME and not a box on wheels. I have the 2019 Night Shade, first Toyota I have owned and I must say it is far and away better than any Chevy or Ford I have ever owned. The things you whined about, oh the big knobs and it doesn't have electronic this or that, and the blinkers don't blink three times instead one will have to...OMG wait for it...hold the blinker handle or actually switch the blinker on to change lanes...OOOHHH the humanity. Millennials.

This isn’t a very honest review.
    1) radar controlled cruise control doesn’t work when there’s 3” of ice and snow on it.
    2) lane departure doesn’t work when the road is full of ice and snow. Besides, you drive in the lane that’s actually plowed.
    3) auto lift gates also have sensors that aren’t worth anything when there’s ice accumulation on the sensors.
    4) the screen in the middle is old school but seriously, how often do we actually look at it?
    5) you can’t fit in the third row? What adult sits back there? Those are for the kids if you have kids.
    6) the engine is not weak and has plenty of power. This isn’t a sports car.
The 4Runner is a tool for those who need the capability. I live in Minnesota and could care less about all the fru-fru options with the exception of the heated seats which are a must here.
These things will go through anything that nature throws at it particularly when it dumps 2 ft of snow overnight.

I disagree with the power. It’s extremely under powered...an 8 second 0-60, 16 second quarter mile at 85mph is pathetic....a Toyota Prius runs a 17.xx quarter mile at 80mph meaning this thing would barely beat a Toyota Prius.
I test drive one last week the transmission is so unbelievably bad and slow I thought something was maybe stuck under the accelerator pedal...it’s extremely underpowered.

4Runners are Built To last, not to dazzle you with all the bells and whistle‘s for 5 - 7 years and then be scrapped (like a chevy, Ford, Dodge). To be honest, i feel like this has too many options. I dont want the automatic running boards. Might go with the trd Off road or sr5.

The simple basic rugged features are the key to this modern SUV. Im so glad my nightshade doesn't have brake assist, auto start/stop, lane assist etc. We all agree they need more power or throttle response. Just add a TRD air filter and a sprint booster v3 and the difference is night/day despite mpg still being poor.

I have a Venza and was thinking of going to Highlander next time but suspension was shot after 60,000km and tires constantly getting punctured. I spend half the driving time off the pavement so under these conditions the 4Runner is better suited than most crossovers.

  • @scotty_james
    @scotty_james 5 лет назад +9

I wanted the Highlander initially, but when I saw this beauty in the lot I had to take a look. One of the top selling features for me is the absence of nuisance safety features like blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and collision avoidance. I truly believe these safety devices have made road safety worse as people no longer feel the need to shoulder check or watch the road more than half the time. The chunky big buttons and dials plus the vintage, simple styling scream “efficiency” and “utilitarianism” - something the world can use a little bit more of. But I will contradict myself and agree with the reviewer that the rear hatch opening and closing should have come fully automated. Final comment, and this is probably wrong for me to say, but after driving both the highlander and the 4Runner I just feel like the Highlander is more for the ladies or the family man who gets only half the say. I love this beast!

@@maxlandireviews I have been on a 4Runner kick since recently seeing the Nightshade edition online. Also, talking with a few coworkers who own or have owned 4Runner’s and couldn’t speak more highly of them.
Your review definitely took the wind out of my sails, so to speak. For good reason though. While I’d like a 4Runner, it may not be as suitable as an every day driver. With the prospect of a new career in the not so distant future, having a comfortable and fuel efficient ride would be optimal. I didn’t gather from your video that it was too comfortable or quiet on the interior, for that matter. Maybe the 2021 and 2022 will be different.
Guess I’ll have to go test drive one! I have a 2013 Camry SE V6 and it’s been great to me. Before that, a 2008 Corolla, also super dependable. I think I’m brand loyal to Toyota now. The highlander just doesn’t do it for me.
Also, really wishing 4runners came with the bird’s eye camera system and “panoramic” moon roof.

The biggest shame is that Toyota didn’t update 4Runner when they updated Prado in 2017. The biggest change in face-lifted Prado is updated gearbox from GX that makes it so much smoother and better to drive, also they’ve added quite bit of modern gizmos to it as well. It’s like Toyota hates NA market or really wants you to buy pricier GX

The 2020 4runner will be my next car. I will not be getting the Limited though. I will get either the SR5 Premium or TRD. One big reason I want a 4runner, besides it's reliability, is it's simplicity and lack of, IMO, unnecessary tech. I am not a fan of all that, especially since I tend to keep my cars "forever".
But, I do want a newer/undated head unit. Luckily I have heard that they are updated it for 2020, so I am waiting for that. Otherwise, I was going to put a aftermarket radio in, and I hate doing that, but the current radio/head unit, is outdated. Hopefully 2020 fixes that issue along with a few other upgrades. Keep the power train the same as it's tried and true and I don't want to be a tester for a new engine or trans that may or may not be reliable.
