When they make the movie, they’ll have to get Gene Hackman out of retirement to play this guy. But, in all seriousness, we all need to take some responsibility here. I have written to my MP several times, begging that we send aircraft and naval forces to focus efforts on Crimea, as the Ukrainians want, so as to end this war. We think that’s expensive, but the blood and treasure we could save, not to mention the following prosperity of a peacetime Ukraine, with countries like ours being in the front of the cue out of gratitude for our help, could change Europe’s fortunes altogether.
We all need to write to NATO now. Until NATO makes a declaration that they WILL SEE TO IT that Ukraine WINS this war, TOTAL VICTORY, Putin is encouraged to stay in the fight, instead of creating his own off ramps at home. Enough of all this pusillanimous help for Ukraine’s, “defence.” We have it in our gift to offer Ukraine victory! NATO needs to hear the appetite for that is there among the people of the free world.
In the end, they’re all politicians first. And we have our votes. That gives us leverage. The more they hear the message, the more powerful the pressure. And anyone who tells you that writing to your representatives is a waste of time, is badly deceived.

Ukraine never had nuclear weapons. They were Soviet weapons placed in Ukraine. They gave them back in exchange for money. It should also be noted that at the same time Belarus gave them back freely.

They do, but the reality is that leaders/governments of the world's most powerful & richest nations are not run 'by the people & for the people'. Instead, the expectations & demands of the richest & most powerful, and those who donate millions of dollars to election campaign funds are given top (sometimes only) prirority. The result is these leaders/governments have political/economic/social/military priorities & agendas which are not discussed openly, are not promised in campaign speeches, and appear to ignore what most normal, rational people would consider logical analysis, good advice, common-sense conclusions, and admirable goals.

Ukraine's progression is slow, they are nevertheless progressing whether it's inch by inch, meter by meter or kilometer by kilometer while waiting for their F16s; and even if everything stops for the moment, for as long as Russia doesn't advance and doesn't dislodge Ukrainians from their current positions, Ukrainians are just buying time before the F16s arrives.
This is a very different situation to Russia wherein they are in complete full stop, unable to invade Kyiv and unable to advance anywhere, that's a total failure.
So the number one job of Ukraine right now is to hold positions, not let Russia advance and have them just defending there, advance safely but not recklessly, the idea is to buy time for F16s to arrive very soon.
If Russia is this slow and doesn't act now and dislodge Ukraine from their positions, it's gonna be a sad sad day for them when F16s arrives, this war will be over fast and everything including their black sea fleet will be obliterated.

More pearls before swine. I cannot imagine that many active-duty military are not advocating the same level of commitment that Gen. Breedlove (among others) has stated. The only saving grace in this conflict must be the almost complete incompetence of the Russian forces. Otherwise, Ukraine would have been overrun long ago. Had the West provided the tanks, aircraft and long-range artillery required to actually win the war, this could have been much closer to being over by now.

While appreciating General Breedlove's logical approach to the current situation - virtual stalemate - in Ukraine, I do believe he ignores the very real possibility of the war spreading if everything he desires for Ukraine were granted. Much here depends upon China's response to the West escalating support, because without Chinese backing Putin's position is not tenable in the long run. But the general is absolutely right about not rewarding "bad behaviour" and the slow but sustained Western support will ultimately bear fruit. Probably not by outright victory in the field but by a palace revolution.

But in 2014, the United States and NATO supported the anti-Russian coup in Kiev and the war on the border with Russia. They actually occupied Ukraine and tried to place a naval base in Crimea (the Russians simply did not allow it to be done). For 8 years Kiev shelled the Northeast, and NATO encouraged it. In 2021, Russia proposed to NATO to conclude an agreement on peace and mutual security. NATO refused and was preparing for the aggression of Donbass and Crimea! Then Russia recognized the independence of the Northeast from Ukraine. This is what you call Russia's aggression. It was George Santayana, the Philosopher who came out with the quote “Those who do not learn History are forced to repeat it” and another one of his quotes “Only the dead have seen the end of war.” As far as Russia and the rest of the world is concerned Santayana seem to be right on the spot. However, is it that Russia’s history repetition takes a bizarre, macabre and eerie turn on and off. There was the ‘mad monk’ Gregory Rasputin who managed to get him into the royal court and have the ear of Empress Alexandrovna, the Tsar Nicholas’s consort so as to make himself the most powerful man in Russia. Even now, the names of Rasputin and Putin rhymes in a deadly echo ! Has Putin become the avatar of Rasputin ! Where to find a present day Prince Yosupov, who did away with Rasputin ! Even the Russians and the rest of world does not seem to be duly bothered about these strange, macabre happenings. As for “Only the dead have seen the end of war” is quite pertinent to Russia who suffered death tolls amounting to millions due to wars, revolutions and what not. There is a small S.Asian country which has had a 30 year long civil strife costing many lives both soldiers and rebels. However, the rulers and others including certain clergy seem not have reckoned with History repeating itself and still keen to set the country aflame in nationalistic concepts like majority and the minority setting them against each other. Additionally, this country is famous for inherent corruption at every level politicos and otherwise. These countries will never learn and the History will keep repeating itself on and on without an ‘off’ ! Finally RIP …………………!

It can't be helped. It's a shark tank, because only amoral (or immoral) people would seek power in such regime. People not playing the game are played out and are seen as dangerous by all as they would just as well accept the regime falling and willingly serve also whatever government comes next. In such a setting, too competent people are a threat to the leader but competence is also needed, so it's loyalty above all, and everyone is being played against each other. In vying for the leader's favour in an effort to gain power (and wealth), the underlings show things as favourably as possible so the leader starts getting skewed information. Because of skewed information, all problems look like outliers caused by intentional acts of disloyalty rather than a natural result of having incompetent people, who only care about their own power and how things can be made to look, in charge. This further emphasizes the need for loyalty and skews the information even more.
You end up with a structure that keeps strengthening the leader's existing prejudices and creates policies that try to play to them. The leader is constantly presented a picture that is significantly rosier than the reality and the distance between them increases all the time. The leader has also been presented a streak of *wins* their whole time in power, which makes their assessments overly optimistic even if they were to base them on accurate information.
