    In addition to decent hiking boots, I've found that trekking poles have been really helpful, especially going down a slope. They help slow the descent.
    I get that staying outside the park is much less expensive, but as you point out, you could easily spend 1-3 hours getting from your hotel to your destination in the park. Sunrise/sunset in July is 6 a.m./9 p.m., so if you want to see wildlife at those times, you'll have to leave your hotel around 3 or 4 a.m. for dawn, or return to it around midnight for dusk. Just something to consider...
    Great information otherwise.

    • @GoTravelOnTheCheap
      @GoTravelOnTheCheap  3 года назад +2

      Yes, April likes to use trekking poles at times since she has balance/vertigo issues... 🙂 That is a very valid point...it is worth it to stay closer for wildlife sightings. Thank you for watching & commenting; we appreciate the support! 😊

    I’ve been there on two separate trips and both times I stayed in Idaho falls. It’s only 1.5 hours away. Also stayed one night in Cody and that is a beautiful drive!! Idaho falls is a nice town with all the needed stores and restaurants. I also downloaded Gypsy Guide app for Yellowstone and it’s an awesome guided tour you can play through your vehicle stereo system. It works off the GPS on your phone and gives lots of history and practical info as you ride though.

    What that bear shot in the beginning, was that a wild bear? Packing tip is useful! I still think having comfortable shoes that gives you support and can walk for long hours on are more important than specific hiking boots, unless you really go for some rock climbing paths. Looks indeed as some good routes to drive on. Nah no entertainment is needed, the environment is your music. So I should probably come around spring time. Luckily you didn't go beyond the boardwalks.

    • @GoTravelOnTheCheap
      @GoTravelOnTheCheap  3 года назад

      Wild bear, yes. Support in shoes is important, but on so very many trails around these parts, you definitely need grip/traction. Spring or fall...our main priority is going when there are less tourists, hahaha. Lucky indeed! 😎

    Great Info. The only thing we disagree on is we love camping and staying inside the park. We have six kids and extra driving is difficult and we like to get to places early. We do move campgrounds every two days.

      Thank you for watching! We are totally open to camping and/or staying in the park...we just usually visit more last-minute since we live relatively nearby, so usually inside the park places are all booked up. 😇 How far in the future do you usually make your camping reservations?

      We are guessing they will probably "hate on" the Junior Ranger Program (designed for up to 13 year olds), but we wonder if you make it more compelling--like with a daily reward or something--then perhaps they will get into doing it... Or you could tailor your own version of the program to their levels, like spying animals or different flowers--something like a scavenger hunt. Maybe they would enjoy doing a 'best picture of the day' competition--it could even have multiple categories.
      Hopefully if they are experiencing nature like they have never experienced before, then they will be open to having a pleasant time and good attitudes. 😊 Perhaps if they know going in that there will likely be traffic delays and/or crowds and that y'all might have to defer to a plan B for a few hours, that could help them be prepared to adjust better..?
      Feel free to ask us any more questions; we are happy to help if we can! 😇

    So like, what are the logistics? How far are the airports when you arrive? Are there rental car companies? How far away are the hotels? Are there grocery stores or should I fly with some food to save money? It seems like you just drive around and stop somewhere then start hiking?
    Sorry, lots of questions. I have never been to a big national park. From Iowa, so driving isnt really an option.

    • @GoTravelOnTheCheap

      We are happy to help as we can... Our first suggestion is to please go watch our video all the way through again. 😇 We specifically talk about each nearby airport and hopefully that will help you decide which is the best option for you. There should be rental car companies either at or near each airport. Rental car prices are not great right now, just to give you fair warning. 😎 (If you are curious as to why, feel free to ask and we'll explain.) We also specifically talk about some different cities/towns as far as lodging goes. You will be able to buy groceries in the city/town you stay in; we simply try to point out that if possible, you want to get a cooler and purchase your food/meal supplies before entering the park, so that you can picnic or at least one of your meals, since the park is so large and there can be traffic delays because of so many people and/or animal sightings. You can see some of Yellowstone by car, some by walking the boardwalks and even more by hiking...plus there are other activities in and near the park.
      Please feel free to write down some questions while watching our video again, then you can reply to us here with more questions, or you are welcome to find us via Facebook. 😊 When are you thinking about visiting Yellowstone? We've heard things have been really hot & dry for y'all there in Iowa too, like us here in Utah...?
