- The chefs had to cook a dish while simultaneously giving instructions to a mystery partner, hidden behind a partition, on how to cook the same exact dish. The mystery partners were Brooke's sister Jessica, John's wife Tracy, Sheldon's wife Janice, and Shirley's husband Jimmy.

I always think that, too. Maybe it's something to do with talking through the screen (of course the chef's don't hear the partner as well as we do) and just not expecting them to be there? Anyway, yes--go Sheldon!

SO strange to me that these people don't know their spouses voices.....
Sheldon is just sunshine. I am always rooting for him.
Interesting that Sheldon was the only one to recognize his spouse/loved one's voice.
While it's a little bit surprising that they didn't recognize their loved ones, I think there are a few things going on. First of all, similar to the blind taste testing, the majority of people's sense of hearing is not finely tuned. Just look at all the bad american idol auditions who can't hear how off pitch they are. They are also in a high stress environment where they have a limited time to think. There is a lot of extra noise as well. There's a clip in this video where brook is talking to her sister and even though we the audience can hear her voice through a mic, you can still hear shirley's voice in the background at the same time so it must be extremely loud for her in person.
The last factor is expectation. I think they would be much more likely to guess their spouse if they were somewhat near their home, but I just don't think it was anywhere on their mind's radar. One of them asked how they even got there it was so surprising. You can see Sheldon's reaction when he first recognizes his wife's voice. He looks completely shocked like a deer in headlights. Notice he didn't immediately recognize her voice either, it took a little while. It may have been easier for him to recognize her voice because it's a lot more unique. It's higher pitched than most women and she is very sing-songy in her tone. She descended through like 5 semi-tones when she said, "I don't have mushrooms" which was the moment he recognized her voice.
How can none of them know immediately who is their partner?? One of them finally did..

We played a game like this at church one time. We had the big wall and one person would sit and another would come in and read a Bible verse and we'd say which book of the Bible it was from and a bonus point if we recognized the voice. I knew instantly when my hubby son daughter cousin and best friend spoke. I don't know how anyone would not recognize their partner or sisters voice.
