Eighteen years ago my neighbours newborn baby was laying on a bouncer in the lounge room asleep. My neighbour was with the baby watching TV and went into the kitchen to get a drink when all of a sudden her German Shepherd ran into the loungeroom and jumped onto the baby and ripped him to pieces. The mother couldn't do anything and also got bitten by the dog. When the police came they immediately shot the dog. The poor baby didn't stand a chance and this dog was supposed to be part of the family. The vet said dogs get very jealous if they've been in the family for a long time and there hasn't been any children there. The vet said this is probably what happened because he didn't like the new baby getting all the attention. I will never forget this. People just don't realize what dogs are capable of around babies and children.

It amazes me how the huskies are aware of their size and are very gentle with their new sister. They just give her tons of kisses but don't rest their heads on her. I remember seeing a video where a husky saw its baby sister sleeping on the floor and crawled next to her. It lay down but made sure its head was resting on the pillow, not the baby's head.

Same here. The dogs are dominating the parents and although they (the dogs) look like they have no bad intentions with the baby, it is só só easy to make a small mistake.
Dogs are known to get jealous and will 'bite' (snap) and jump at the dog or animal that is being held by the parent. They've got video's online of dogs responding with jealousy to a stuffed toy that they then yank out of the arms of the person holding it. You can see these dogs jumping up at the baby too. The lines 'Oh give it to me' or 'Oh lemme see' don't make it any cuter if you realise the dog is dominating.
The cat might carry the toxoplasmosis-bacteria that can turn the baby blind, the dogs are too big for the baby and when the dog barks, it is not taken away but instead rewarded with the baby, that it then licks with a e-coli filled mouth. I am a Pedagogic Worker and although they tried to be careful, I see so many risks here.

The real concern is when the child gets old enough to start grabbing ears, poking the dogs, etc. Because young children don't know when a dog is telling them to stop. Babies, toddlers, young kids, should never be unsupervised with any dog. No matter how patient a dog is, they all bite if pushed too far.

Don't dwell on things from the past, don't stress on your future. Just live your life, because you only get one. Do whatever makes you happy, not what other people want from you. I really love this video and as everyone has said, how you introduced the animals one by one. I don’t know if I would have been as brave to do this simply because animals are still ANIMALS. My loving, adorable Shiloh Shepherd is my baby (5 yo) but one day a stray kitten found it’s way to our doorstep and I brought it in, put it in my lap, and my Shepherd came over and I thought she would give her kisses ( like your dogs did to the baby) but instead she quickly and stealthily went for the kitten’s neck!!! She wanted it for her next meal!! Needless to say, we didn’t keep the kitten, but I never thought of my dog in the same way around other smaller animals and would have never taken the chance with a baby!! I couldn’t get that out of my mind watching your video. Hope you’re all doing wonderfully!!!

When he took the baby and the husky jumped up and 'dominated' wanting to get attention, (also barking loudly at the baby that then got upset) I thought the dad was going to ignore the dog and dissaprove the behaviour, to show that dominating doesn't get you anywhere.
Instead he kneeled down to let the husky see the baby up close, licking the babies face at 3:25, with a tongue that has e-coli on it. On the newborn baby.
The second dog is hyperactive too, sniffing and barking, while the baby stretches out his little hands near the dog's nose.
It can misinterpret that as food, easily. I wouldn't hold my hand near our (wellbehaved) dog's mouth if she was upset, simply because she might snap out of fright and stress. It wasn't necessary that the baby's hand was there, it was not important, it was just a coincidental (high) risk.
Which would be a minor scratch on my hand at the very most, but to a baby that is a wound, or a hand that's gone.
The baby is very upset about the barking, but the dog is not given the command to be silent. Instead, the dog is shown the baby upclose, after which it gets licked too, with the same e-coli.
Then the cat is being put in the newborns crib. There is a reason why mothers aren't allowed to clean catlitterboxes. The same goes for babies, they can still get toxoplasmosis. That means they go blind. It's a commonly known thing.
It's all very cute to you, because you know the dogs, but I see 3 enthusiastic animals that have no idea how fragile this baby is. How fragile the hearing is, and how the bacteria in their tongue can cause horrible diseases that might forever change the life of this little baby.
I see animals that want to jump near it, to see closer (not realizing that if the one jump goes wrong, the baby is severely injured) and I see parents that answer the demanding barking of the dogs with a positive 'here you go, here is the baby you requested.' If the dog is not calm, it cannot see the baby, that's an easy solution to that.
It was your home video and I hope you enjoyed your moment, you can't change things anymore, so I won't say anything further about that.
But to anyone watching that wants to do the same, please know that I (dogowner and Pedagogic Worker) wouldn't take a risk like that with a newborn child.
Give it a few weeks, let them sniff from a distance. They're dogs, they can sniff a drop of blood from a few meters away..you think they nééd to stick their nose in the baby's face in order to get to know him? They knew her while he was still in the womb, they don't need to lick the face.

Finally a logical comment. The most important thing is to keep an infant safe and healthy. It amazes me that owners of dogs don't realize thier dog can be a risk to the baby and not properly train the dog.
My one friend is 8 months and has an untrained husky that jumps up and has a high pray drive. I am so nervous for when the baby is here and try to warn her.

@@mcol3657 She definitely should always keep the baby in her lap and away from the dog and teach the dog _immediately_ that certain behaviour is not wanted around the child. The praising should be done ríght after the dog listens to that command, to avoid the dog seeing the child as an intruder that gets all the love and is the new 'favorite' in the house.
I hope all goes well with your friend and the newborn. I don't know why people fail to see the risk of their dogs...I mean, as beforementioned, we have a small fluffy dog that barks at plastic bags and then runs off with a frightened yelp and we would certainly not let her near kids without supervision and us being really closeby, simply for the fact that kids are unpredictable and they could always accidentally hit her in the face while dropping their arm down or something. What if she accidentally bites? We don't want to find out, so we always sit nearby if a (big) child wants to pet her and we make sure the dog is calm and doesn't jump up. That way, it's a nice experience for both.

Exactly! I really hope they come to realize how much of an issue it can be and re-home the dog or finally take training extremely serious.
Were also expecting in Feb and have a small cockapoo and cat. Were playing baby crying noises to get the animals adjusted and not letting the cat in the room that well use for the nursery. Idk much about cats... Do you have any advice how to keep the infant safe and healthy w cats?

I think I do have some tips, yes :) I have written them down, but my sister knows more about these things (from the animal's perspective) so I'll ask her tomorrow if my reply is correct, before I send it to you. It's midnight here now haha, so you'll hear from me tomorrow :) congratulations on the pregnancy bytheway!

@@mcol3657 That is a good thing to do, the baby crying noises to 'normalise' it for the animals. A friend of mine had a pregnant cat (those can be very territorial) that gave birth around the same time as the baby was born. Now, not to scare you, because since it was the first litter, the cat was véry stressed and couldn't handle any noise (dogbarking or cars, anything set it off.)
But once the newbaby started loudly crying, the cat went bezerk and attacked the older sister and the adults in the room, until they had all left the livingroom. And then started moving her kittens and hid them (they do that when they feel unsafe) and it turns out that she stuffed them in a drainpipe and it had to be removed to get the kittens back out.
But your cat isn't pregnant, I assume :) So that's a whole different situation. Still important, if the cat ever gets pregnant.
The cat knows that there is a newborn and it'll probably know you're pregnant too. I think that once the baby is there, I would start with perhaps leaving around items that smell of the baby. Not necessarily clothing, but a (smelly) burpingcloth that needs to be washed anyway, can, for an hour or so, be put somewhere near the place they walk (not in their basket or their favorite hidingspaces) Maybe on the floor, in the middle of the room, ready to sniff. You can obviously wash it afterthey've sniffed it and later you will find something else (likea bib) that can be put on the floor in a different spot.
Just so they get an extra confirmation that this is now a normal smell too.
If the baby starts crying, make sure that the animals can 'escape' the noise, by giving them a place to get away from the noise or a "soundproof" cathouse (I'm thinking about one with the opening to the side, to block out the noise) or something else. You can give the cat a treat if the crying seems to make it agitated or stressed. Give the cat something that takes time to open up/fold out, like an closed up cartboard-eggbox with treats inside or a few toiletrolls folded shut with a treat in there. The longer they are busy with it, the fewer they might notice the baby crying.
I know 'showing the baby' to the cat sounds like fun and taking pictures together is also understandable (Christmas for example), but if the baby is moving a lot and they haven't gotten familiar in a close way yet, I'd advice to have someone hold the cat and you hold the baby and don't put them next to each other without supervision (yet.
You can also sit on the couch together, one playing with the baby, one stroking the cat.
If the cat looks relaxed, then it's alright. If it tries to get to the baby (depending on the age, hereby assuming he's old enough to avoid healthrisks) you can very carefully see what happens when he smells the baby's arm or leg. Make sure the face is not directly in front of the cat or shield it with your hand a bit (confrontation and staring might trigger anger) and let the cat sniff the baby and praise the cat (and baby) if it's being careful and friendly.
When the bodylanguage is not positive, pick the baby up and bring it to safety.
Also, keep in mind that a baby's response to something fun/interesting/new is to grab and squeeze. Cat's don't like to be grabbed and squeezed, so avoid the baby grabbing at the cat's tail or paws or face or otherwise, because that will result in a warning-scratch.
While talking about eyecontact, it's also a risk (in some animals) to show affection to the baby and then make direct eyecontact with the cat or dog. You might mean well (as if to say; 'I like you as well Pookie, don't worry') but they can see it as a provocation and if that is the case, it'll make them jealous. Depending on the animal, they will come over to demand your attention and/ór get very upset and try to attack the baby, because he's the one that's getting the attention.
My sister recommended something additional to do before the baby gets born, which is to build-down (if that's the word, I'm not a native English speaker) the attention and time with the cat and dog, so there's not a sudden change once the baby is there.
Most people, she says, try to pamper the dog and cat with attention, because they know there will be less time to spend together with the baby needing time too.
But for the dog and cat, that is a very abrupt change, because they go from normal attention to loads of attention to barely any. It's best to let them get used to a smaller amount of constant attention in advance, so they don't feel neglected when you réálly don't have time for them. They'll have learned to deal with that, if you start practicing it now.
So, maybe it sounds like an open door, but understanding their bodylanguage is really important. If the dog and cat look fed up, keep on walking back and forth, the cat keeps hiding away from the noise or you introduce them and the tail gets really thick and the backhair stands up, those are signs that the cat is not having it and that the baby should be picked up and taken elsewhere.
To take their mind off the baby, put their food (or snacks) in eggboxes or cornflakes-boxes.
My sister also mentioned Jackson Galaxy, who has a RUclips-channel. He's a guy that works with cats (sometimes with large problems and agression, sometimes with small problems) and he has a lot of information about bodylanguage of a cat and probably also has video's about cats and babies/toddlers and how to make that work properly. :)
