This is the original System 16 arcade version, released only in Japan. The Mini version is a bit different, and is a true port to the Genesis, that could be run on an EverDrive, for example. The Mini version has some small differences vs. the System 16 version, but I'd say it's the best version of Sega's Tetris. The Mini version's audio is near perfect, though the backgrounds are less colorful.
100% agreed. I consider Sega's design the foundation to work from for making any other Tetris/Tetris-like game. I think the only correct rotation system is one that remains floorbound on flat floors without any kicks, only kicking when the stack gets a little more complicated or off of walls (TGMs).

I came for the music actually. I find its remix pretty sweet, and the original was quite intriguing. The background is… not as exciting for me. The chimp is creepy, to say the least.
the issue is that the piece distribution is totally random, not 7 bag. not to mention unruly das, arr, 1 next preview, no hold, and lock delay that doesn't reset on piece move/rotation, and only resets on fall.
