      Yep. I got the same emotion when I watched it when broadcast. It's like the writers managed to encompass the genuine sensation of the expression "someone must have walked over my grave." The whole sequence plays like we see things in dreams. Although not in the clip here, when Jim Keats walks in from the shadows, it just adds to it. The way situations, thoughts, people, locations flit about in our dreams. Hard to write, but kudos to Kudos - they really treaded fascinating ground here. I genuinely hope Ashley Pharaoh and Matthew Graham are sure their decision to revisit all this with new 'Life on Mars' (as rumoured) will have the mileage to keep us similarly gripped!

    In my opinion, Gene started off like Sam and Alex, a confused soul. However over time, he became the ferryman of the souls type. He sticks with it in my opinion because he never was a real policeman. He was still a rookie where he died. So in the afterlife, he has found his true calling as an shit-kicking copper and a mentor and guide for his men.

    Watching this after a long time away from it. What's really great is the shifts in person by the end "HE didn't deserve a shallow grave" - Gene is talking about himself in the third person because he's become something much different in death and the afterlife than what he was when he was alive. And you can hear the sense of justice/injustice in what he says. He might of bent the laws a lot, but he was always a moral man who treated people right and made sure justice was done properly.

    @barneyjones33 Gene took Sam to the pub, which means that Sam has now "passed over" into heaven, along with Annie. Think of Gene's world as a purgatory for coppers, the place where they go after they die to either find redemption and go to the pub (go to heaven) or make the wrong choices and transfer to Keats' department (go to hell).

    Have binge watched Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes whilst recovering from Covid. I was heartbroken at the end of A2A Season 2 when Gene disappeared from Alex's World - I realised I'd fallen for him like Alex had. Have just watched this final episode of season 3 - twice in a row and spent the last 20 minutes both times bawling my eyes out. Philip Glenister did a phenomenal job in portraying a tough character with a subtle soft side. I was praying he wasn't going to turn out to be a baddie, I would have felt so cheated. It felt so right to have him turn out to be like an angel into the light for other lost souls. I still feel bereft however and I think that feeling will haunt me for a while yet. Brilliant concept and brilliant writing

    I watched AtA on and off 10 years ago when it first came on TV. I was in school so didn’t really understand it properly but enjoyed it nonetheless. Just finished rewatching on iPlayer and it’s probably the best show I’ve seen. Few questions though;
    If Gene has forgotten he’s dead, then why does he follow Alex to his grave and points a gun to her telling her to stop digging?
    Why is young Gene’s ghost haunting Alex?
    What does Gene say to Bevan before he dies that makes him scream?
    Who is that weird escaped prisoner who acts as if he is Sam Tyler?

    • @VainerCactus0
      @VainerCactus0 4 года назад +10

      "If Gene has forgotten he’s dead, then why does he follow Alex to his grave and points a gun to her telling her to stop digging?"
      Presumably he knows something is in there that would shatter his world, even if he has forgotten what it is exactly.
      "Why is young Gene’s ghost haunting Alex?"
      It's probably symbolic of something, or maybe just because that world is a very strange place.
      "What does Gene say to Bevan before he dies that makes him scream?"
      I think he told Bevan the truth of the world they inhabited. Presumably Bevan is one of the real coppers who died somehow and went to purgatory with Gene Hunt. Covering up a murder and going after the comedian guy is clearly a bad decision and will probably lead to his "transfer" to Jim Keats department with the weird elevator. I think Viv who died in the prison riot was also one of the real people in purgatory.
      "Who is that weird escaped prisoner who acts as if he is Sam Tyler?"
      I was confused about this, but I read a few interviews and I think what Gene says is pretty much right, the guy is a con man or a fantasist, not actually Sam.
      I wonder how many people in that purgatory world are actually real, or if most of them are just like NPCs in a video game.

    I always knew in my heart that the body wouldn’t be Sam’s. Whatever else Gene was, he was never a murderer. Was still very surprised when it turned out to be his own body though. I hadn’t seen that coming.
    It also answered the question of why the copper who was stalking Alex didn’t look like Sam Tyler at all. Because it wasn’t Sam Tyler, it was a 19-year-old Gene.
    I also knew instinctively that there was something wrong with Keats. He was pretending to be virtuous on the outside, but his obsession with “taking Gene down” bordered on the psychopathic. For him to be unmasked as the Devil at the end was about right, then.
    It was always going to be difficult to write a good ending to the series, but they pulled it off pretty well 👍🏼

    I loved how it aired before the weekend and the following was the epic end to Lost which was a similar ending.
    I've just rewatched Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes with my husband, his first time. He came damned close to the basics.
    My thought were Keats was a demon not the devil per se and Gene trying to save the coppers from themselves so they could be strong enough not to be corrupted. The whole show was leaning towards bent cops.
    As Gene was a rooky, he admitted learning so much from Sam and Alex and perhaps needed them as equals but never letting his guard down because in his head he was the Sheriff.
    Either way, it's a fabulous show and there's hint of another series with Gene and Sam. Before I die please? X

    @MichaelBradley1988 sorry, but the co-creators and writers of LoM have confirmed several times that Sam is alive but in a coma throughout the series. He really does wake up in 2006 at the end, but realises that he doesn't want to live that life any more - the reference to him not being able to feel anything should be taken metaphorically, not literally - so he commits suicide by jumping off the building so that he can go back to GeneWorld.

    Brilliant final episode.Sam had jumped off the building in life on mars,so died, Alex was dead,Chris and Ray were dead,Shaz was dead and they were all in limbo before going to Heaven (the pub)or hell (the lift shaft) , I was expecting Hunt to wake up in 2010 and realise it had all been his dream as he was the one mad or in a coma and that Shaz would be a top ranking detective and be his boss!

    i really hope there will be a third installment. maybe called dust to dust. set in the late 80's or even 90's. i feel there is still alot of mileage left in gene hunt's character and especially now as gene has re-remembered his gatekeeper role, the story could be taken even darker.

    true. one thing keeps going round in my mind.... if all the main characters died in strange circumstances and found themselves in genes world ( peragtory for coppers ), then what about all the criminals? how did they get drawn into gene's world also? same with sam tyler's mum and dad? based off the theory that it's troubled souls in pergatory, then surely that would make everyone that has ever appeared in LOM, or A2A 'troubled souls' ( aka dead ) also?

    • @FloatingFont

    • @KingOfTheInterWebs

      My thought is that they all get caught up between the time they've come from and a year that's important to them and that Gene Hunt's world is the team and department he's built up to help them move on. And that heaven and hell are just hallucinations like the Test Card Girl or the Clown of Death that they all share and go on to experience after accepting their deaths.
      So it is actually the past and all these criminals, family members and other coppers exist back then but some are coppers who have suffered trauma and suffer from hallucinations as a result. It's convoluted but while I liked the ending, I felt like it didn't address the most obvious elephant in the room; the fact they're in the 'past' and they seem to be able to change time slightly. It's a shame because they seemed to address everything else except the time travel.

    • @MiG2880
      @MiG2880 6 лет назад +1

      Perhaps the criminals represented the dark feelings in every one of them. The part of themselves they needed to conquer in order to move on.

    • @indiavaughan8051
      @indiavaughan8051 6 лет назад +2

      I think maybe the people they recognised were constructs made by gene or someone higher up than gene to help the troubled cops get through the events they needed to in order to get peace, closure, whatever, and all the other people, the ones they don’t recognise, such as the criminals and that, are constructs made so that they’d believe it was real? And then Morgan and Keats were the devil, or connected to the devil, trying to tempt them away from their own personal heaven at the end of their time in purgatory or limbo or whatever.

    Actually,A2A finished before Lost, so the originality belongs to them, and as co-creator Mathew Graham revealed the idea had been around since the end of season 2 in a behind the scenes excerpt. Drake had never returned from her coma, the whole part of her 'waking up' was her entering a deeper coma caused by going into a coma in a coma. She had never returned from her original comatose state. No one is really bringing into question the quality of ending LoM received either.

      Not quite! The police officers/survivors of horrific, life changing criminal attack are all in limbo between Hell [death] via the lift shaft! Or, they enter the light [pub] as they recover from their injuries. The Masonic allegory of the light is useful in the analysis of this brilliantly creative piece of comedic drama.

      @@RyanR_27 Sam and Alex weren't dead to begin with though, so it appears officers who were injured and at the point of death can go there too.
      Sam gets hit by a car and is almost killed, so he goes there while in his coma. Then when he wakes up, he feels that 2006 is no longer the real world, so he kills himself in order to return to Gene's world. I believe that, aside from his affection for Gene's people, his feelings of unreality and numbness to pain on his return to 2006 were symptoms of his head injury, and that he might well have died anyway and returned to Gene's world had he not jumped off the roof.
      Then, when Alex is shot she is almost dead and doesn't wake up until the end of Season 2. Then she goes to that DVD store and is briefly shown outside it before seeing herself in the hospital and then waking up back in Gene's world. The creators have said that the moment of her death was when everything went black after she saw herself in the hospital. I believe she collapsed outside that DVD store, likely from a brain haemorrhage that was a delayed symptom of her bullet wound, and was rushed to hospital where she died and entered Gene's world again.

Thinks she's the center of the universe, and can't handle the frustration when the universe doesn't cooperate with her delusion. The show doesn't turn out the way she expected, so it 'ruins' her life and it's all the writers' fault! Wah!
