I think that's why Geddy doesn't consider it a Rush song. It's a very personal song about an experience unique the Neil that he wanted to share. I think it works for what it wants to do, but it is very different than just about anything else from Rush.

This is the bass highlight song of all bass highlight songs. It was sufficiently hard for Geddy to play and sing at the same time that they only played it on the HYF tour, although he did a great job of it. Having to do both of those things plus hitting the pedals to trigger the sequences was part of why Presto pulls back a lot from the keyboards. Alex's solo on this is great, if a bit 80s cliche with the Floyd Rose dive bombs, but it fits the big in your face feel of the song. And Neil subtly mixes it up by bringing in extra tom hits for the last chorus. 100% this should've been the single, it might've actually beaten New World Man's mid-20s peak chart position given the fusion-y things that were hits around that time.

Turn the Page is another very cool song. Very cool intro. And great bass playing. For me, it's just like Force 10 - a bit quirky and different sounding but very cool. One of the better tracks on the album. It was only played live on the Hold Your Fire Tour. Like Lock and Key, I've always thought Rush should have played this one live a bit more frequently. I read that Geddy finds this song difficult to play live because the vocal and bass lines are a challenge to perform simultaneously live.

    • @LeviRamsey

Not to mention triggering things with his foot. It's this song that kind of made them say, "we've taken the sequencers as far as we can, let's step back".

  • @kevinkilduff2064
    @kevinkilduff2064 2 года назад +2

I would agree that it should have been a radio song. Great beat, lyrics, tight production and catchy melody. Geddy's voice was still quite good at this time and here he handles the lyrical delivery with aplomb and feeling. So many of Rush's songs have wonderful messages and certainly this fits that bill. "Turn the Page " is certainly one of my favs from this album and was a fan favorite at concerts throughout the late 80s-90s and early 2000s.

Believe it or not, this not only my favourite Rush song, it's my favourite song period - even after more than 30 years. The lyrics, the chord progression, that insanely difficult bass line - plus what I consider a beautiful melody. It just comes together in the best possible "Rush" way in the 1980s. Geddy Lee is one of the best lead singers when it comes to crafting melodies, especially considering when he's working with some of Neil's more esoteric lyrics. But this album - including Time Stand Still, Prime Mover, Second Nature, Turn the Page - is in my opinion their melodic peak, with Turn the Page bringing back some of the more-or-less hard guitar sounds they abandoned with the other synth-driven albums. And as with so many of Neil's lyrics, it's a timeless message that, whatever is going on in the world today, it will pass. We disengage, we turn the page.

This is an album that I didn't enjoy as much as a kid (I mean it still definitely influenced me greatly), but now that I'm in my 30s it's somehow become one of my fav albums with this my favorite song for the moment. I didn't consciously choose it. I just noticed that I kept coming back to this song more and more frequently over the last few years. I can't get it out of my system. The driving rhythms, atmospheric synths, and lyrics that express how I feel all the time.

This song is definitely a top 10 Rush song for me. Once you decipher the lyrics, the synergistic effect with the "wall of sound" music puts me into such a melancholy state-- holy crap. This song is extremely relevant to what's happening in the world right now. It provides me great solace because I know that, looking down from a high enough vantage point: it's just the age... it's just a stage. That helps me tremendously to get through all this bullshit.

Good reaction Justin, I understand why you may struggle with this album a little as it is very "of its time" and admittedly it's not one of my favourites, but then no longterm artist that's been around as long as Rush can achieve constant brilliance, it's always going to be varied to some extent.... i'm curious that as a bass player yourself you don't talk more about Geddy's playing? Anyway enjoying your videos thanks.

I feel that post Moving Pictures Rush rarely picked their strongest songs to be released as singles. I don't know if it was them, their management or the label. I think they could've gotten a lot more radio play and gained some fans if they released certain songs over others.

Picking weird songs for singles predates MP. "Entre Nous" was the followup single to "Spirit of Radio" when "Freewill" was right there. And the singles from the first album were "Finding My Way" and "In The Mood", not "Working Man".

I think their record label was picking many of the wrong songs as singles and poorly promoting these 80’s albums, and therefore is likely one of the main reasons they chose to change labels after this album and ASoH.

I became acquainted with Rush around 1981, and immediately listened to everything and fell in love with all the old stuff. Almost immediately, Signals came out and I hated it. But they were still my favorite band. I was disappointed in everything they did after that, although I did like some of Power Windows, and this album was a new low in my opinion. As I grew older, and my musical tastes matured, a came back and re-listened to all of them, and now see them for the master classes that they are. I still feel that this album, and Presto, were weak for them, but still have some profound messages. That all being said, I have always had a fondness for Tai Shan. It feels like a deeply personal song to me, and I think it's beautiful. I never understood the hate for it. But that's Rush fans for ya!!

Scott asked Geddy if Rush got any flack from Bob Seger for using the title of one of his most famous songs. Geddy convinced Scott that he never heard of it. By the time Scott asked him who his favorite band outside of Rush was, without hesitation, Geddy replied, 'Devo!'. LMAO! He had fun with that horse's arse, "The Fifth Beatle"

Time Stands Still is the most powerful lyrics I've ever heard in any poem. Rush mixes the best poetry with the best music. I still enjoy them, but with a more learned ear I guess.

I pretty much quit following their new music after Signals until Counterparts. It was too "Poppy" for my taste. I do like Grace Under Pressure now though.

Bass and drums in this were pretty awesome. Alex came out of his whole-note coma just long enough to play a solo, but then went back under again. It's still the best one on this album - by far. Would have been better without the coma though.

Presto is differnt than power windows and hold your fire. I'm just curious how your going to react to that album. I liked Presto better. To me it's like a upper beat rock jazz sound. There's synth in it just not as flashy or as much as hold your fire. When you finally get too Counterparts it sound more like the older rush. Heavier riffs and bass sound better. Again not knocking anyone that hold your fire or Power Windows is their favorite. Just my view but I grew up in a different time. Enjoy your reactions and honest opinions. Your only one that has stuck with it. Keep going bro!

I think at the very least he's going to be entertained by the musical joke at the beginning of "Show Don't Tell" where a synth pad starts to fade up and gets obliterated by Alex's power chords. Presto definitely has imperfect production, but the songs are great and the guitar/bass/drums feel is stronger than it's been since Signals.

Again, it took me from '87 until a couple of years ago to fully appreciate this album. That might be a result of my letting go of what I wanted it to be. Then again, maybe not. 😂
I do like "Time Stand Still," "Prime Mover," "Second Nature," and some of "Lock and Key." And I really like Neil's explorations as a writer throughout. I'm so glad that his blindly defiant Ayn Rand phase played itself out as quickly as it did.
Obviusly not the biggest proponent of "Tai Shan." I don't dislike it because it "isn't Rush." Rush were whoever they wanted to be and any real fan respects them for that. "It just doesn't work for me as a piece of music.

Rush always took their experimental phases as far
as they could. I believe that’s
    why their musical paths were
    so divergent because they pushed
    their capabilities within themselves.
none of them had any real music schooling or training, just raw
    creativity and talent…
Tears starts with a “T” so does
    Tai Shan. Hmmm… 🤔

Wait a minute. At the start you said this album is full of hits and misses (mostly misses), but everything until now has been a miss. That can only mean Tai Shan is the hit!! 😲
Do you do requests? I don't see anyone asking for you to listen to something. I was listening to an album today and one of the songs reminded me of 80s Rush. The rest of the album is nothing like them. Anyway, IMO, it's a great album - Anberlin's Vital. Or, if you'd prefer something proggy, Steven Wilson's modern masterpiece, Hand.Cannot.Erase. 👍👍

This is another great song from the record. I get it's not solid front to back (and this is where Rush started putting more songs on a CD so you got some "secondaries") but there are some good songs here. And this is coming from a guy that got turned onto Rush by The Temples of Syrinx.
This song, Prime Mover, Mission, Time Stand Still, all just great songs. Force 10, Second Nature. Lock and Key are all good songs. SMH with the hate...

Had they used Signals as a springboard and gradually added the synth tones, these would have been good albums instead of forgettable ones with a couple of good songs. They seemed to have gone all in a little too quickly and made two sloppy albums. That's my very subjective analysis but hey if you are a synth fan this might be pure gold..

@@jimtatro6550 Time Stand Still was actually the song that got me into Rush in the first place. That, Lock and Key, Prime Mover, Second Nature and especially Turn the Page - which to this day is my favorite song - are among my fave Rush songs of all time. Sure this album wasn't heavy like their earlier and later material, but it was about the most melodic of their catalog.

Yep, a strange composition this one, personally don't like that key change in the verse and one of those weird guitar bursts from Alex with soaring tremolo. Tai Shan is what it is, wait till you hear the clunker that comes after it, High Water, the follow up to Natural Science? I think not.

Album is mostly miss for me as well. Loved it when it came out in '87, but it quickly aged for me. Some GREAT parts but the album sounds thin and over produced and some of the lyrics and melodies are weak. As usual, they played great, Geddy in particular. TTP page being one of his big HITS on the record. But in general, to me, it just didn't work. It's the only RUSH record I never bought as a CD.

It tells you where Rush and their management were at the time that "Turn the Page" was not even *close* to being a single. They've barely even played it live. But as a fan of Yes-ish progressive rock this is arguably the best song Rush had recorded since Signals (it would have fit in on Yes' Big Generator album.) The bass playing is pretty sick, plus the arrangement keeps my ears nicely tickled throughout. The lyrics are somewhat throwaway, but after 3 albums of pretty meh music hearing this song was a huge relief. I never get tired of hearing it, which is more than I can say for the rest of this album!

  • @bradhart6487

This song sits at the bottom of the list for me, next to Second Nature. (Yes, below Tai Shan and High Water). The playing on it is more "Rush-like", but I find the song annoying. So many fans seem to slobber over the bass part, but it just sounds busy and farty to me, not musical. And lyrically, it's another one of those nothing songs from Peart - "the news can be bad. We have to move along". It's not insightful at all. I love lots of the musical choices they made during the synth era...but the sounds on this song are irksome to me. An ALWAYS skip song.

Dude, love the reactions. Here's a couple everyone has to remember.
1- Please remember that when this came out, it was 2 years since Power Windows. We Rush fans would love anything new, except for Tai Shan. But we did have to hear at least once.
2- Speaking of that song that can't be mentioned anymore. Your reactions almost felt like a countdown to it, and that could alter a first listen. In 1987 this was new and we didn't have the warning to stop after Turn the Page or continue if your a masochist.
Thanks for the reactions, looking forward to A Show of Hands and you hearing good songs recorded live and without Peter Collins altering the sound so much.
