territories on show of hands is freakin cool, whit the tribal guy on the screen shot.it is a good show ,its gonna be long tiil the end my friend, lots of albums to go, cant wait for presto,,( superconductor) one of my fav,the fastest song on the album, cool riff, keep rockin, justin,🤘🥁🎸
So glad to hear you warming to Power Windows. You at first not really liking it and then loving it is what 90% of Rush fans did. It's probably my 3rd favorite. Rock on.
How can you not like Mission? Lol. I appreciate all your reviews. You tell it as you see it and that’s they way it should be. Don’t sweat the jerks. If they leave all the better. I appreciate your perspective. It’s refreshing for me to hear reactions to songs from someone hearing them for the first time. I’ve been listening to these songs for more than 40 years so it’s nice to hear a different perspective.
This is one of your funniest overviews hahaha, I loved it!! Spot on
Dood, you're my spirit animal. I mean, I love the joking and no bullshit talking. I consider myself an asshole at times too lol. Keep being you and being real man. Folks gotta toughen up. I appreciate everything you're doing. This journey has been amazing. I hope you guys are recovering ok from the storm.
Great comments 👌 I agree and am the same.
There's a reason why you got that album in so many gift boxes from your subscribers. I would have sent mine but used it for a Frisbee
Justin, love the honesty! Keep up the good work. Hope you and your family are doing well!
Thank you so much Marc!! We are well! Insurance adjuster came by to check on the house. We have power and water just waiting on internet… hopefully up soon cause my scheduled videos are about to run out!!
@@JustinPanariello Glad to hear that everything is on the mend!
Yep, totally agree as you know. Presto and Roll the Bones are definitely a step up and I Iike Presto a bit better. Counterparts is up there in my favourites list.
Agree. Presto and Roll the Bones are better and have some really good songs, but I really like Counterparts and feel it's one of their stronger later albums.
I'm all in on Counterparts, very much in my top Rush albums along with Signals, both probably have the most listens.
Gene Simmons was once asked to describe Rush, his one word response "fearless". Pretty much sums the boys up.
Love your honesty. I still hold this one in higher esteem for its lyrics as I'm not a musician (and a I am an 80's fan...) But it's nice to hear another point of view. I hope everything is ok after the storm. And whether or not it's one of your upcoming "featurettes", I'm really relieved you liked Time Stand Still more and had a chance to listen to that US Army version commemorating Neil Peart.
Thank you Doug! We are doing alright. Waiting to hear from insurance and still without internet. Hopefully not for long as my scheduled videos are about to run out!
Love it, this was a really insightful and entertaining video, thanks 🙏 I appreciate your dedication sticking to your commitment. Regarding live albums, I reckon if you do A Show of Hands and Different Stages (first 2 discs only, the third is a bonus 1978 recording from the Farewell to Kings tour) then you can ignore all future live albums as they are just the soundtrack for the live concert videos. Just a thought. Looking forward to Presto, it’s got some great songs on it and sounds more like a rock trio again (as per Rupert Hine’s thoughts when he was going to produce the album). Cheers!
For once I was correct in my prediction, I knew you wouldn’t like HYF, unfortunately I don’t think you’re going to like Show of Hands, Presto or Roll the Bones much better. Counterparts is the album that returns Rush to it’s rock and roll roots.
Couldn't have said it better. I think the next few have a bit more than HYF, but absolutely agree with the Counterparts.
I was going to disagree, but really there's only one song I really like on Presto, although that one song (The Pass) I do like better than any song on this album. However Show of Hands has some great performances.
May be I'm against all odds but I'm pretty sure he will find some solid songs and less lame tracks on the next two albums. In my opinion the problem with these albums is the "flat" sound. But I agree on Counterparts, that's a hell of an album.
I think he’ll like the Counterparts production and sound, but not the whole album. I can’t wait to see Justin’s WTF face for the return of the Necromancer pitch-shift narration on the song Double Agent.
I told him already!✌️
There is a more recent version of Mission live where Geddy uses a jazz bass. You will like the tone better and it might change your opinion of the song in general.
Man your my favorite reactor cause u don't bullshit and straight to the point. I appreciate it keep going bro !!
You will like Show of Hands, watch the live videos. The sound is very good. All Power Windows tracks are sounding really how they ought to sound, much heavier.
I admire your commitment to see the Rush discography through. When you announced it months ago, I knew it was a daunting undertaking, even if you "only" did the 19 studio albums, but the double live records, too? As a Rush fan since '75, I appreciate your honesty. Don't let the internet trolls get to you, Justin!! RUSH ON! ✌
TRUTH! I too have been a fan since 1976. I appreciate the views and HONEST reactions.
This is a REACTION channel.
Keep it up, Justin.
Thanks Justine April.
I get where you’re coming from! I’m a giant RUSH fan, but this was the 1st time I heard some/most of these songs! For the same reasons you gave! Appreciate all you’re doing and the time you’re taking out of your schedule to go thru this with us! The next few albums will be “iffy”, but by the time you get to Counterparts, they’ve gotten back to the bass, drum and guitar with the synths more of a melody/accent or backdrop and the instruments are not drowned out! And the songwriting gets better, too! Keep up the good work and if we only do 1 a day because of the storm, we’re good with that! Continue to do YOU, dude… that’s why we watch! Stay safe and God bless… from Texas!!
That "get on your bike" line was hilarious!
Justin your doing a good job! Just keep plugging along we enjoy it!!! Us Rush fans are tough we can handle it 😉😉😉
You're not losing me. I'm here for you man! I'll tell you what, I never liked Mystic Rhythms, but this is another song that with a more mature listen, it's growing on me! Thanks man!
I think when you have a band that had a career as long as Rush, whose members were not a bunch of hacks who had one weapon or sound in their arsenal, it is inevitable that you will get people who love and hate specific periods of their discography. Especially when you combine it with the attitude that they have talked about often where they have stated that there was nothing that any of them would bring creatively where the others would go that is not Rush (which explains Tai Shan). They were willing to experiment and explore any idea any of them brought to the group. I think that also helped them maintain their friendship and working relationship because no one ever felt that they were not being heard or being stifled. As a fan of theirs, I think there is nothing wrong with saying I like certain albums or eras better than others when the band themselves have said similar things.
If you watch the documentary Beyond the lighted stage it talks about the some fans walking away when the synths hit. It talks about fan loyalty . Getty refers to rush as a great cult band.
Or even Geddy!
Thank you, Justin for doing this. As a late 70s to early 80s fan, I have never had the courage to delve into their late 80s to 90s music. What got me into Rush was their first live album, so it will be interesting to hear their third.
Yeah keep listening. For myself, counterparts, vapor trails, and clockwork Angels are some of the best albums.
While many people want to pigeon hole bands into a specific genre, Rush didn't conform to genre. Many like to claim they were, Led Zeppelin copies, Hard Rock, Progressive Rock or Father's of Progressive Metal etc... but I would simply say the were Progressive throught their career in and out of all genre's. During different seasons in life and their careers they hit upon so many different genre's and yet they still sounded like Rush. You just finished their Adult Contemporary phase as you noted. Even in that genre, there were great drum parts, cool bass lines and some fun guitar work. They were hard rocking, Progressive Rock/Metal, had ballads, Reggie, Ska, orchestral, pop, movie soundtrack and soon, yes you'll hear Rap.
But here's the thing about the uncool band that is now cool to listen too. The lyrics for the most part (excluding Tai Shan...j/k), the quality of the musicianship is always extraordinary, they took us, those who grew up in them, on a journey that was never boring, repetative or clichéd and their concerts were spectacular. Three guys from the suburbs of Toronto who basically said, were going work our tails off and show you how you can break free and do it or way.
Long journey, but I believe you're going to find some great work yet ahead.
LMFAO! Great review vid! Yeah I couldn’t have said it better myself. People are too sensitive. But I get it they’re passionate about their music and the songs they like. But that’s no reason to throw hate your way or to not watch the reactions. I also think people sometimes forget that it’s your first time hearing the song. A show of hands is probably one of my most played Rush albums, mainly because I just love playing along with it. I could give two craps about celebrities, but when Neil passed, I kind of felt that one. His drumming and his lyrics had a big effect on my personal life. Your joke about Neil was hilarious tho😂😂😂! I still say that those Rush fans that stopped listening after such and such album, really missed out on some great music!
I enjoyed your commentary on the whole album and your feelings are almost totally aligned with mine. I checked my spotify, and the only song we differ on is High Water, which I've got on my liked song list for the mood and drum pattern (and I've been a fan since the 70s). I do have a signed tour program from HYF from the boys (well, my wife actually has it, they gave it to her for her birthday). Keep it going, this is the low point.
The Lock and Key drum outro section is fantastic, loads of energy!
Mystic Rhythms and High Water always struck me as similar, i wasn’t expecting your reaction being so different….
Geddy learnd the Wal basses from the Brand X bassist and was blown away by it . I personal can diggit. Has a very down to earth sound. Fits okay with the albumsound. But it's a very solid instrument build by people ho love the bass guitar .
Turn The Page, Mission, Force Ten are nice, maybe Time Stand Still for the lyrics and the feel
Great overview! Very honest, and insightful. ✌
Keep up the great truthful reactions Justin, clockwork angels is a long long way off but well worth the journey to get there. Me and my old bands mates all have an opinion on their worst/best Rush album and we're all different, I think it helped us write music better, it would be boring being all the same. The RED album! and the next 2 I wouldn't lose any sleep over if I didn't have them. I was at the Birmingham NEC recording of SOH the atmosphere was awesome. Hope everything gets better soon after Ian, takecare.
Love your videos. I would like to see you react to the Time Stand Still music video. It's painfully the 80s
Grace under pressure tour is unbelievable in terms of playing BTW. Keep it up !!
I concur wholeheartedly.
HYF, later on in life you might be more ok with it, after mellowing a bit. :) I do like what you're doing and I'm glad you're persisting. :) Like Power Windows you'll probably get it more... Tai Shan will even grow on you like lichen or moss. :) Hahaha, I can joke around too. :)
Do you have early Rush in your playlist?
With people there are always the fractionalists who can divide anything and make a tizzy out of their division. I don't tend to get along with those sorts, but I've learned to tolerate them and then move along when I get a chance. :)
For sure there is some music I don't enjoy and don't wish to listen to. That's just different tastes and different generation too. In the morning I'm also much less tolerant of many things - after I wake up and it doesn't hurt to listen to some things I can cope.
Just life. "We disengage, we turn the page..."
Nailed it! The first three tracks of Presto are Geddy's apology tour.
Man, I wish the rap surprise hadn’t been spoiled for you. I would’ve loved to see your face when it comes out of nowhere 😂
Whatever period you first got into a band will stay your fav period. My first 2 Rush concerts were at Maple Leaf Gardens, Rush's home stadium, for Signals some older fans literally booed the new songs and for Grace Under Pressure they booed the opening act (FM) off the stage, or tried to, they were very loud as FM left the stage. That part of the audience just wasn't there on the rest of the tours.
Grace Under Pressure is my most listened to Rush album! It's not like their other records!
Justin, this is your channel and please just keep being true to yourself. I love your honesty even when I have a different opinion. I also love your sense of humor. If you remain this genuine with your review channel in the future I am sure you will have a lot of success.
With regard to this album I personally like it a bit more than you but I still agree with your overall opinion. I appreciate some of these songs lyrically a bit more than you but I totally understand how others would feel that this album is "Low T" or has a "Not cool dad feel". I also agree that overall musically this album is not as interesting as their previous albums.
I think you will really enjoy " A Show Of Hands" for the most part.
Keep up the good work and I will say this just be prepared there are still good and bad songs to come. Although I like several songs from the remaining Rush catalogue for me you have already heard the best. At least as far as the best overall albums.
Take care,
GreedyNewt972
I like Presto better than Roll the Bones, even though RTB has some great tracks. Presto is just a better overall album. Also, I think you’ll like A Show of Hands…Mission live will turn you around on the song I think. Looking forward to it!
Agree, better songs, more like PW with less shinny synths.
Justin. You should be careful with the words you use, Rush fans are very passionate. It's fine if you didn't like a song or album but don't say it's garbage.
I made it through “Hold Your Fire” with you and I appreciate it, believe me. I thought my opinion might change from when I bought it as a new release, but no. I still dislike it. After this album, I pretty much drifted away from the band’s new material. I was disappointed, but not too much. Their first ten albums were all fantastic and I still went to the concerts every chance I got. Those guys never owed me anything.
I'm nonplussed no one spoke about Snakes and Arrows yet. Its a heavy album, one of my favorites of Alex's playing. S&A shows in addition to shredding he is excellent on slower playing, too.
Also, I’ve watched almost all of your Rush series (except for a few on HYF, I just can’t). Appreciate your perspective and a true critical eye. Who wants to be patted on the head and told everything is awesome?
A Show of Hands is a good opportunity to experience how Rush live is often very different from studio stuff even though they pretty much play everything note for note. It’s alchemy. I think….
Some fans just really hated the synth era and were die hard fans of the 70's sound. And they just checked out when the late 80s came around and frankly there were songs that were really bad in this era but they're also some really great ones too personally, I really love it roll the bones forward that's my favorite era I can't wait for you to get there. Of course it could go really South in your eyes because I loved that era and my second favorite song is mission so we'll just have to see lol!
Yup! imo this and presto (and roll the bones, kinda)each have one or two really good songs and about 5-6 songs that get skipped. So glad for counterparts and the rest. (Except test for echo which was mostly a dud.)
So, we agree on some things but not on others; (This is as it should be). I agree that GUP is a great album! It is one of my favorites. I also agree that you are going to love the "Show of Hands" concert video! I disagree on your choice of Power Windows over Hold Your Fire. IMO, most of the songs on HYF are more enjoyable to listen to. While HYF might not feature the legendary musicianship of some of the band's other albums, the "listenability" (if that's a word) is just as strong. I'm betting that you will change your opinion on many of these songs, (MISSION, TURN THE PAGE, etc..) after hearing them live. CAN'T WAIT!! P.S. Hope things are getting better after the storm! 🏆🏆
In the live more recent version Geddy uses a jazz bass on mission so he should love the tone.
"A Show of Hands" is the live concert right after "Hold Your Fire", and before their next studio album (Presto), you'll just be hearing the same stuff again. I'd move right to "Presto"...
It’s all good. I used to love these (power windows, hold your fire, presto) and would play them until the cassette tapes wore out. They are up beat, which I like. The music is still fairly complex, which I also like. But if you like blues, then these are not for you. Let Presto lift your soul. There is some great musicianship on that album and it includes the Pass, which is one of the band’s favorite songs. Listen good to the lyrics on that one. Party on!
Most of us have lived this era in real time and came out alive. You'll do fine in the fast forward version of the Rush experience. There are good and bad songs on every album but even the bad songs are still Rush songs.
It just goes to show how amazing the run of albums from 2112 through Signals was that even with a string of sub-par 80s albums Rush held onto a super intense and loyal fan base. Yeah, they lost the Mike Portnoys of the world, but they also picked up some new ones -- sort of like Yes did with 90125. But I'd say Rush did an even better job of navigating the dark days of the 80's, and held the ship together until the musical winds shifted in their favor and they could get back to being a power trio again. But -- in case you haven't figured it out by now, Justin -- Rush fans are like some sports fans. They'll root for and support their team no matter how crappy a product they put out. It almost makes they MORE loyal when someone comes along and says "That sucked." Them's fightin' words! 😄 But now we're onto a very 80s sounding live album (and video -- which you need to see for "Geddy's raccoon" hair). Can't wait!
I think you’ll find the next couple of studio albums a pretty big improvement over HYF, although they’re still not (in my opinion) on the level of Signals or GUP. Counterparts gets closer, as does TFE. The final 3 albums are amazing, among their best work. (When you get to Vapour Trails, make sure you listen to the remixed version - it sounds much better. Night & day difference.)
All of that’s jumping ahead, though. A Show of Hands, as you’ve likely discovered (unless Ian screwed that up), is a good exhibition of 80s Rush. Sadly, the Wal is still there, but otherwise it’s a pretty good live album, though not on par with Exit Stage Left or the later Rush in Rio.
Anyway, glad you’re enjoying the journey, even if some of the detours seem uninspiring.
Much like the post-2000 live albums, Show of Hands just sounds better than GUP/PW/HYF as a baseline, and that helps a lot.
I’m in total sync with you on this commentary
Can't wait till you start listening to presto, it was my favorite album since signals
Great video! Rush is my favorite band but I'm not a fanboy. Some of their songs I simply don't like. I appreciate your honest opinions.
Seriously you need to do the video even if you don't show it to us because they do really funny stuff in between the songs and the video behind them is also something to see
Growing up I lived up to Grace Under Pressure. I disliked Power Windows and the subsequent 5-6 albums, and lost track of Rush for awhile. I started to listen again around Snakes and Arrows and in Snakes and Arrows live, really started to appreciate live versions of many of those songs. Mission is great live - I think it was after Alex changed amps and did more of the music production. The sound gets a lot deeper and has a heavy feel. I still prefer the live versions.
The part where Geddy is almost talking rather then singing, you are right, Lock and Key. 4min10 in the song.
Oh, the “spoken word” part you mentioned might be the last vocals on Open Secrets…”I find no absolution in my rational point of view…”…that section. Wait! Need to edit 😁…it’s actually Lock and Key. You were right. Lol!
A great band, who like a lot of others with a deep catalogue, have a few duds in there. The problem lies with a lot of fanatics who seem to possess no objectivity!
I think the Show of Hands video is superior to the audio album, because the song selection in the video came from a wider range of their discography. The audio version practically only sticks with the three synth era albums for song selection. Its more fun to hear Rush's late 80s pizzaz era doing 2112 and old numbers like that. But, of course with the live video you also get to see the boys in their best Duran Duran fashion and Geddy's legendary dead racoon haircut for 90 minutes.
The songs you dislike the studio version of, you'll like the live version. The songs you like the studio version of you'll love live.
People think you won’t like Presto but I think there’s a couple tunes you’ll enjoy.
Hey man, I love what you're doing here! I may not agree completely with your opinion or preferences but that doesn't matter. They are YOUR opinions and preferences. Everyone is different and that's okay!!👍 I'm enjoying your videos and your honesty!! Keep em coming!
I was also wondering if you would consider doing this with Iron Maiden?? That would be awesome!! Thanks again for the great content!!👏👍
I am actually not super familiar with Maiden or Priest. Tho from what ive heard Id rather do Priest. If I did Maiden I’d probably get soooo much hate lol.
Yeah, I thought about that too..lol. But, seriously, Steve Harris is another iconic bassist and writes 90% of Maiden's music and lyrics. I have no doubt there would be A LOT of awesome songs you would love. I'm also a fan of Priest so, you can't go wrong either way. Thanks!
Yeah just keep on being truthful. Some people can't handle the truth lol.
This was the second tour that I saw them on back in high school and of course I was stoked it was an excellent production Etc and the band really seemed to be in a comfortable place but the '80s were all over the place and for a band like this that really never had a visual image I think it was exceptionally Rocky ground. For power windows, it was remarkable to actually see rush in regular rotation on mtv. That was just not something that had happened previously and all the ice cold digital bullshit and multi-layered effects and stuff was pretty much numb on my ears because that's just what music sounded like at that time, now I had come up from 2112 being the first thing I ever heard a few years prior and it was a rabid fan and I made peace very quickly with the notion that they were a band that was going to change drastically every record and I was okay with that as long as the lyrics were intelligent and the musicianship was Top Notch which say what you will is a constant with this band. And in an era when everyone is cramming poison up everybody's ass Rush was such a breath of fresh air that it was hard to be exactly discriminating about what was or wasn't strong with the material when I was just so grateful the material existed at all. In retrospect a lot of what you have to say here is very valid and not every band's going to hit it out of the park every time I think in retrospect Rush has way more hits than misses but the misses do exist and it would be utter fanboy mushbrain silliness to not admit that that was a real thing. So I think you're doing good work here dude. Show of hands is a cool live record it was not my favorite of the time having been such a fan of all the world's a stage and how raw and just powerful it was but it's one of those records that has aged pretty gracefully I think and you'll probably enjoy it if not for any other reason but that the material on it is very strong
Just so glad Rush didn't try to go down that other 80's Road and become a hair metal band
i hope you react to the dvd/laserdisc too since the album and dvd tracklists are different
Your honesty is refreshing,I love rush but not every song, luckily rush have more good songs than bad,a show of hands is an exceptional live album in my opinion it really brings their eighties songs to life, the other band that is equal to me are opeth, would love for you to review them, death metal to prog.
Love to hear someone else love Grace Under Pressure. I love the production. You can hear every instrument clearly. This album is what it is: a mature 'Adult Contemporary' version of Rush. A few excellent songs then meh. Keep up the good 'opinionated' work.
Look, Tai Shan is the song responsible for Rush getting back together after breaking up due to Neil's family tragedies.
I'm sure after Neil was able to get through the grieving process, waves of guilt flooded over him thinking, 'If my band mates were able to do Tai Shan for me, the least I can do is come back and get the band back together!'
The video performances are different from the album. There are a couple of songs that differ between the two ad well.
I prefer the cd version of the songs over the video but seeing them play is also awesome. A show of hands vhs was the first time I ever saw the band with the exception of Tom Sawyer ESL on MTV when I was like 8 years old. So it was a joy seeing this concert.
I know you don’t like Mission much but the solo on the end is so good on ASOH. And yes, mor energy hearing these songs live but seeing them play them is also better. So it tough to say which version (album or video) to watch. If memory serves me, there is a guy dancing along to Turn the Page. Yes. Dancing at a rush concert. About as rare as a woman at a rush concert. 😂
There were many many women at the last few Rush concerts I went to, including myself. That stereotype was outdated by the 90s.
The live video for mission is great, I hope the cd version is identical.
@@squaaaaak3178 the cd version. Is different. Solo is a tad different and geddy’s vocals are different. I would guess the video version. Was later in the tour as his voice stays lower register and sings it differently then the album. That tells me he was playing around more to keep it fresh.
And I was just joking about the woman comment. If you ever saw the funny or die video with Rush, even they make a similar comment about women at their shows. 😀
Damn, whoever sent you that album must be disappointed, or perhaps feel the same way. I must agree with you on all points. I also miss the jazz bass and did not find the songs on this record really compelling to listen to again.
Just like championship sports teams, sometimes you have to Flush one and focus on the next.
Maybe the live record will get everyone engaged again.
Regarding Geddy walking away from lyrics, he's said multiple times from the 70s onward that he and Neil go back and forth on songs because he won't sing anything he doesn't believe, and a lot of songs end up being changed substantially from their original form because of that. I take his later comments on Tai Shan as some self-ass-covering because of that.
As I commented yesterday, 80s songwriting is hard to get right. Stevie's "I Just Called To Say I Love You" is not great in some of the same ways as HYF, but he's still the guy who wrote Innervisions.
The rap in Roll The Bones is more spoken word than flow, and Neil goes a little too hard on the rhyming dictionary. More like Debbie Harry on Rapture than Snoop Dogg. In concert they played it for laughs and it became a live favorite in that context. And the entire message of the record is "don't be weak, get out there and try things", tied into Neil's decision to take jazz drumming lessons. So doing weird stuff on the album makes perfect sense.
Justin “maybe your soft or maybe I am an asshole” That’s awesome. Keep up the good work! Either you like it or you don’t. I personally think you like discography maybe more than you thought would. :) I do think you definitely appreciate their musicianship.
A Show of Hands will change your mind, at least a little bit. And like I said, the song list between the live album and the video is slightly different, so to get those extra tracks, look into both.
Justin, you're kind of like the Howard Stern of Rush reactions. Some of you're comments can be quite shocking, especially to the devout followers. When I started following Rush back in 1976 I was 14 years old. I had been playing drums for about 4 years at that point. The music Rush was making inspired me to be a better drummer. But my point is, I was collecting the bands albums during the transitional years of production. So I couldn't speak intelligently on the subject. Nowadays though, I've been working in the entertainment business for 30+ years, so I can understand your point of view a lot better. Now regarding HYF, I've not listened to the album in full since it came out. Your reaction is the first time I've heard some of these songs in years. I find listening to them in moderation in a Live scenario makes them easier to palate. I really liked A Show of Hands as I've said previously. Largely because, it's Live and you're hearing the HYF songs next to their other material. And I'll leave you with this. The upcoming studio albums that you'll be listening to went through another shift in direction. New producers, new engineers, and getting back to their roots with their backline gear. Rupert Hine once commented, that he wanted to take them back to being a "Power Trio that wasn't all smothered in keyboards". You can see these interviews on the documentary, Beyond The Lighted Stage. So,, this is all I have for now. And I'm looking forward to the upcoming reactions! 😎☮️
"The Howard Stern of RUSH reactions"! LMAO
Boy are you not going to like Presto lol and as a Rush loyalist since 76' I totally get it. The last Rush album I purchased back in the day was Grace Under Pressure. I like GUP but it was a bit much for me and Power Windows went over the edge. I love and will always love Rush but I just have to listen to 74'-84' Rush. It is what it is...
If the music on an album is questionable, It's time to hit the road and mix it in with the greatest hits and no ome is the wiser!
Both are low in the ranks, but I have HYF above Power Windows just by a hair. Presto beats them both. I'm the rare fan that loves Presto. And I still have a worn out A Show of Hands on vhs!
Completely agree with you about the bass tone. Huge Rush fan here but this is my least favourite album. However live versions of these 80s songs are infinitely better. Keep up the Rush journey!
I think listening to you talk smack about some Rush songs *cough* Tai Chan *cough* might be my favorite part of your reviews now. LOL
It's nice to hear some of HYF had grown on you. I didn't think it would became one of your favorites, but at least you started to appreciate Time Stand Still. I like this album, but recognize it's definitely weaker than the others. I do think Mission translates well live because that outro guitar solo is FIRE and you hear all of it live.
Presto has a much different feel to it and the synths are scaled back a lot. That'll keep going on for the rest of their career, so I don't think you'll be having to deal with the 80s production you don't like anymore.
Presto is better than HYF and has one of their more popular songs, The Pass, on it. It's one of my favorites along with Available Light which I consider fantastic.
Roll the Bones is generally one of my less favorite albums, but it's absolutely better than HYF. And Counterparts is much more stripped down and gets pretty heavy in some parts. I like that one a lot and think you might as well!
You still have two more of what I personally consider masterpiece albums left: Vapor Trails, which was their first album after Neil's tragic life events, and their last one Clockwork Angels. Both have a lot of great songs on them. You may want to listen to the remastered versions of the Vapor Trails songs because the production is very muddy sounding on the original. But the songs are GREAT.
That's all, hope you and the family are doing well after the hurricane! Keep up the good work!
Thsnk You for sticking with it.
*What Rush Albums do you have now. So no one gets you multiples?? If they wanted to send one?
I have them all up to Hold Your Fire except their first self titled album and 2112.
@@JustinPanariello TY
Do you accept/use CDs or just the vinyl
@@mark-be9mq i dont use cds sorry 🤷♂️
@@JustinPanariello Good to know. Thanks. And it's b even cool watching the reviews.
I think the fact that Rush is such a unique sounding band - even just given Geddy Lee's voice alone - it breeds a fan base that is often fanatical. It's a bit of a cult band thing. You need only look at the way Neil Peart is talked about as if he's some kind of god who walked among us. It's all about art at a certain point, not technique...BUT, if we're simply measuring technique, there are many players who could play circles around him from a technical standpoint. But that doesn't stop the fanatics from praising him - it's like they can't entertain the idea for one moment that Peart is an above average rock drummer among many really talented rock drummers. And that type of thinking exists in the view of their catalogue in general...the idea that they are untouchable. I have disagreed with a bunch of your reactions, but I respect them and can see that there are things in the discography that are not for everyone. Don't let the worshippers get you down.
Yeah, I have the Show of Hands DVD, its cool, but just do the audio..I think thats enough.
“Go back to your chalet, or castle whatever” 😂
I did laugh at that one. :)
Got me lol too
The video has some different songs than the audio. Has prime mover plus Tom Sawyer, spirit of radio 2112 and La Villa Strangiato. No witch hunt maybe a couple of other different things. The album is better for you I think as it focuses mostly on the 4 most recent albums.
While it's not packed with noteworthy songs, HYF does have a few that are pretty sweet. "Force Ten" is a classic from them. Personally, I'd skip the live album because there's no need. "Presto" and "Roll The Bones" just don't feel like they quite got a full grip on being Rush. They have good songs (with the exception of the two ending songs on RTB that make me cringe), but they just don't feel like they got over their 80s divergence. "Counterparts", to me, is when they felt like full Rush again (and stayed that way).
Careful with a Show of hands because you have 2 different set lists. The video version has Tom Sawyer, La villa Strangiato, Temple of Syrinx, Spirit of the radio, Lock and key and YYZ which are not on the audio set list. However Subdivisions and Distant early warning are not in the video version. Anyways just saying you should try and listen to the whole thing by mixing the 2 versions.
Oh man… are all the other songs the same? Like the same performance? From the same concert?
You should at least do a couple of the songs with video footage from "A Show of Hands" after you do the audio, specifically "Turn the Page", "Manhattan Project" and "Mission."
You should tap out at this point. If Hold Your Fire didn't do anything for you, none of the remaining albums will either. Not even Counterparts, lol.
Unfortunately, Geddy took more artistic control with primarily using keyboards as his main songwriting tool, with Alex having to then create guitar parts with what he was presented. With Alex being put in that position, he had to change his approach and went for a more textural stance with his playing which is unique and not the norm for rock music and it comes off as weak at times, especially when you compare it to the masterful and epic guitar playing of Rush’s earlier stuff.
Once they start veering away from writing on keyboards, Rush has a bit of a rebirth a couple of albums from now. But with that said, there are lots of gems on their albums from now until then.
The 'spoken' part you're talking about is likely the end of Lock & Key
"We don't want to be victims
On that we all agree
So we lock up the killer instinct
And throw away the key...."
That’s all I could think of too. But it’s not really all that “spoken”. In my mind, when I hear spoken, I think the end of Digital Man. “He doesn’t need a bed, because he’s out to be a digital … man.” Haha
Do the video version! You'll thank yourself later! I promise!
Agree.
Your 'approach' must be a Florida thing. As a Canadian raised in Ohio (and standing less than 5'8"") I have always sought to be tactful and polite. It's taken me decades to master being an asshole when I see fit. No problems with you being you
More like a NY/NJ thing … an MA thing. a CA thing. And now a FL thing. 🤷♂️
More weakness to come. The Rush fury won't be back until Counterparts.
And I hate the sound of the Wahl... and I'm a drummer!
you have to do Show of Hands video version LOTTTT better!!!!
