    I'm a bit more of a marine _paleo_ biologist... Basically I try to piece together and understand marine life long ago - for instance, in a sea that once covered Europe, ~70 million years ago :)

    I'd become a marine biologist for many reasons: 1. I love Animals 2. I love researching stuff about science 3. For the amazingly beautiful animals to see 4. to under stand the ecosystem and animals 5. The beautiful sights to see under water 6. I don’t mind tons of writing. 7. Travel 8. Start my own research team and lab 9. Write a book about marine animals facts research and science 10. Research and study turtles, manatees, whales, seals, and walruses 11. To help the world understand animals more. 12. To see if anything medical can be made from something from nature.
    I want to use chemistry to help with my research in the future.
    I have heard there is a great marine biology degree in a college or university in Hawaii
    I don't know how i can combine my love for chemistry and marine biology.

    • @christianv-h3278
      @christianv-h3278 4 года назад +21

      Ah trust me, you can definitely combine chemistry and marine biology. Many underwater biological processes depend on the chemistry of the water and atmosphere. For instance, corals using (ionic? i think) carbon present in the water to form the basis of their calcium-carbonate-based structure.
      Keep that passion and you'll go far :)

      Hi! I'm from Hawaii and I'm in the same boat :) I live on Oahu, but next year after I graduate High school i plan on going to University of Hawaii at Hilo to study marine bio. I would look at their website! They have details about each major listed at the univeristy. They even have a marine program! Where you can dive and more. There's also UH Manoa here on oahu, although I haven't looked into that university as much. But I can tell you there is alot of marine life here! Even more so around the Big island and Kauai

    I love the ocean and animals, and the sheer vastness of life contained within our many seas (and pockets of water beneath the earth!) was incredible. Two things held me back from actually pursuing anything in biology, though:
    1. I suck at math.
    2. I remembered that after watching Jaws as a kid, I couldn't even get into the bathtub for a few weeks without worrying about a shark coming up out the drain to get me. I've since recovered and love diving and the ocean, but I know I'm probably one giant squid hug away from swearing off baths again.

    I want to become marine biologist because I want to protect animals and plants. Since I was a kid, I love to see animal documentaries. I love the sea also, I'm feeling just so calm when I am near sea. I want to do research about things in the sea as jellyfish or octopus to find molecules to help fighting against diseases. I really want to save the most of the biodiversity in the ocean/sea because the impact of the global warming isn't know well and I'm sick about what can happen in the future. Also, I wish I could share my knowledges in the future with everyone. Olders and youngers. Everyone has something to share and to learn.

I have always been fascinated with animals when I was a child. Due to our country being the Maldives marine life is the the most diverse wildlife we have here and I mostly grew up going fishing, collecting fishes, etc. And being mostly tropical islands and reefs the demand for Marine Scientists and Biologists are extremely high with the large amounts of bio diversity. Anyhow it's a haven for marine biologists like yourselves We house among the largest Manta ray and whale shark biospheres in the world.

    Hi! I am a new subscriber and I am definitely interested in your content on this channel. As you might have guessed, I am interested in becoming a marine biologist, but I am not sure exactly what area I am most interested in. At the moment, I am in my mid twenties trying to attain my bachelor's degree in marine biology.
    I am like this field because I live on an island in the Caribbean, and in my opinion, there are very few marine biologists in the Caribbean and in my country specifically there is not much knowledge. Even though I live on an island, I find that lots of people are afraid of the sea. (The fear of the unknown.) I also feel like people do know understand and appreciate the ecological services that the sea provides and I want to edify others and do research to help this knowledge be sound.
    Overall, I need more Caribbean scientists are needed and I think that there is a massive knowledge gap when it comes to these type of fields in third world countries (In my humble, inexperienced opinion of course).
    I hope you didn't mind reading this essay lol, but I look award to your knew content on this channel.

    • @alganhar1
      @alganhar1 3 года назад +1

      Diving is not a prerequisite, it depends what field you study. Marine Biology is a *huge* field, and there are specialisations within Marine Biology that will never require you to dive during your career.
      Saying that, most marine Biologists I know dive even if it is only as a hobby. Personally I started as a Diver before going into Marine Biology, training as a technical Diver, during which I was on contract to a research group as a support and Scientific Diver for their dive team. They convinced me to apply for a degree in Marine Bio and so I did.
      As I said though, depending on what field you study, diving may not be a requirement for you.

    I was told in year 11 by a family friend (who is a teacher) not to do it as it's highly a competitive field.
    I want to do it to see if I'm capable. Some members of my family have laughed at me because I hated school and yet I want to go to uni.

    • @alganhar1
      @alganhar1 3 года назад +2

      So did I, I went to Uni quite a number of years after leaving school. Trained as a technical Diver, but had always been interested in the Sea. That led me to working for a group for a while as a Scientific Diver on contract, and they convinced me to apply for a Marine Biology degree, which I did. Nice thing in my case is that I always had that Technical Diving to fall back on, so that has added some stability in my career.

    I've looked in to the field of Ichthyology as well as Marine Biology, and I'm scared to try and enter either field and then not be able to do any field work. I would like to study fish and their day to day life styles, not so much as study the world around the fish (if that makes sense?), but I can't seem to find what can lead me to that point. Any suggestions?

    I want the adventure and the knowledge that I’m helping animals though I’ve already finished my first semester getting my vet tech degree. I didn’t discover marine biology until after I started becoming a vet tech and unfortunately I can’t do both and the kind of job I want if I become a marine biologist will be a lot of years of out of state college and I’m not sure I am ready to live far away from my family.

    I studied at Galveston A&M for two years under the marine biology major. I could go back right now for about a year-and-a-half to two years and finish my Bachelor of marine biology. The thing is that was a long time ago. I switched Majors to architecture and have spent most of my career as an architect. Every time I visit Galveston I get that itch to go back to school and finish. I love the ocean and I love Galveston but at this point it feels risky to change careers. I'm 57 years old. I feel young and look young and I've got a lot of years ahead of me. Anybody got any advice for me?

      Hi Mika. I would say you do need a masters degree at least. And if you want to pursue research you will probably need a PhD afterwards. I am not really knowledgeable on marine biology jobs outside the research field, but I think that a masters and/or PhD would probably be required, unless you have extraordinary working experience and a very good network, because you will be competing with other people who probably have a graduate degree. Hope this helped

      @@mikashiota8811 These days going Undergrad - Masters - PhD is pretty much mandatory if you want to go into research either in or outside Academia. There are a few exceptions but they are *very* few and far between.
      You can pursue some support positions without a Graduate degree, and some other positions with some kind of Graduate degree like a Masters or an MPhil, but for research you need that PhD.

If anyone has any knowledge on what work life is like for someone in the field of cetology, please respond :)
