I think one of the best things to do is get as much experience as you can starting from your first year in university. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities, especially if there are research labs in your school. Even if you don't plan to be in academia in the future, research experience can be invaluable for many positions. In the US, take advantage of REU's (Research Experience for Undergraduates) that pay you to do research over the summer at schools all over the country. It didn't really hit me how competitive this field would be until I graduated. While I've been lucky to get a few jobs, they've mostly lasted for a few months; the instability is definitely real, and finding a full time job can be quite difficult. All the points in this video are definitely valid, but even with all the downsides, I couldn't see myself doing anything else.

Because I've always believed that your opinion of what you love can't be impacted too much by the disadvantages😊. Anyway great video!!!😄 and btw I love the shark in the background❤
Depends on the day haha. I am quite happy doing what I am doing at the moment and I don't regret my choices at all =). But sometimes the uncertainty that comes with the job can definitely play tricks in my mind. And it's getting a bit worse the older I get. But on the other hand, I cannot imagine myself working with anything that is not related to the sea. ;)
We all know we want to be rich while we get old, but the job you are enjoying is enough to live your life and the important thing is to enjoy your journey to the fullest that is what we call happiness.
I wished this video was out when i was done with high school. Unfortunately culture played a big part in my life growing up and it eventually stopped me from pursuing my passions but I am glad that now that I am older I still love and enjoyed my passions about animals.

Ok, I'm an anthropologist, so completely different stuff, and it's really interesting how all of this applies to my field as well. You just have to tweak a few words and you're done. I'm sad to see though that one of the passions I didn't go through with faces the same challenges as the field I'm currently in. I'm guessing most fields in academia are like that. But, anyways, I just found your channel and I look forward to follow your journey! Looks like there's some really interesting content. And good luck!

I think that the level of competition you will encounter depends on the subject within marine biology. Whales = lots of competition. Plankton = less competition. It isn't a one size fits all because marine biology is very wide and varied.
If I become a marine biologist do it require of me to swin in deep oceans? I am interested in studying about aquatic species but I'm scared to swim deep in the ocean
I can't decide if I want to be a veterinarian or a marine biologist. I plan on going to a college in Florida. Which has rlly good vet schools and has marine biology majors. I just know I want to do something involving studying animals. I was starting to think about majoring in animal psychology, but I just can't decide. I wish I could do all 😅.
there is an aquatic specialization for a veterinarian cafishvet.com/become-aquatic-veterinarian/, iloveveterinary.com/blog/how-do-you-become-an-aquatic-veterinarian/ and www.iaaam.org/getting-into-aquatic-animal-medicine
so i saw a starfish, specifically chocolate chip starfish, after seeing that starfish, i really want to become a marine biologist and see more starfish
I graduated with a B.S in Marine Biology in 2020 and cannot find any marine biology-related jobs around northern california that pays more than $18 - $20 (even from Monterey Bay Aquarium). I did long-term volunteering for my undergrads in the UC system and cannot find positions that pay $50,000+. I switched my career path into more Lab Technician roles and the pay is slightly better. The field is competitive and there is lack of job openings overall :/
This holds true In any scientific career. Literally ANY one. These conundrums aren’t specifically unique to marine bio. Don’t let it sway you from going after what you want.
Thank you for this video. I’m aspiring to be a Marine Biologist Professor, and I thank you for the knowledge of funding in regards to studies and even staffing and traveling, as well as consumables. That didn’t deter my goals for what I strive for, however it was amazing information I wasn’t aware of. I know that this field requires a lot of work, and I’m all for it, I’m just more nervous in the competition side. Other than field experience, is there any other edge that can help push me into what could be considered as an applicable individual for a marine biologist professor?
i have questions... 1. is the lab work hard? 2. if you get a money grant for the next couple of years, you don't have to need another for until the years are over correct? 3. what kind of marine biologist are you(i was thinking marine mammalogy or marine ethology for me) 4. by stable position, does that mean that you stay in one place, or that you have a job(do you have to continuously look for a new job in this field?)? 5. is it a stressful job? 6. is it worth it in the end? 7. is the salary fitting to the amount of work you put in?
I'm a senior in high school and I've always had a dream to adventure. I love the ocean and sea animals are fascinating but I'm just nervous about going through college with it. Because of the unstable nature of the job. I dont know what to do. Is it worth it? Cuz my heart says go for it but my mind says go for something stable like accounting.
This is exactly where I’m at. I’m taking hospitality and in my 2nd year I’ve been debating back in fourth to switch. I just met someone whose major is Zoology and kind of jealous/inspired by her life, she’s working at an awesome place, experiencing dolphins, scuba diving, she’s doing what she loves, but she isn’t making a lot. I know by working at fine dinning restaurants/business, & saving up I can travel the world and take care of Animals. My other friends has been doing exactly what I’ve been doing. I love the earth and the environment, I always had. So I don’t know, I wish I knew.
I don't know why I'm watching this, I'm studying aerospace engineering. In all seriousness though, it's always interesting to hear scientists talk about their jobs!
I always hate it with a passion when a job requires you to work for free for a CHANCE at getting employed. That’s so messed up especially if they decide to take advantage with no intention of hiring from the start in some cases. Work that makes money should always be paid fairly.
I’m gonna be a marine biologist but focus on the deeper parts of the ocean below 200 meters and about half of my explorations are gonna be in the trenches below 6,000 meters because I really want to explore the deep.
I’m also going to try and run a business and try to discover new species so I can get paid alot more than normal and because I’m exploring the unexplored parts and hopefully because of my business I won’t have to move I can just live where I live in Ontario Canada and travel for work and explorations.

I'm excited to start my career as a marine Biologist but then I know the cons, that come with it too. I feel that's how it is with most jobs too! Also I'm glad I found your video 😁 You show the good and bad and sort of erase the fantastical imagery people think Marine biology is.
Hi! I’m Hifza. A 10year old girl👩🏻, studying in 6th standard. it's been my biggest dream from a small age to become a marine biologist, and reach the bottom of the MARIANA TRENCH. I love to explore the sea, go very deep into the 🐳🐬ocean🦈 and see all those beautiful and amazing creatures🐠🦑🐙 e.t.c... but the only problem is that I don't know😌 swimming as well as diving. is it really important to learn diving from a small age to be a very skilled aquatic biologist??.... I've heard someone say it in one of their RUclips video. The video you uploaded about the 5 reasons y u should become a marine biologist, made me brave and excited. No matter how much effort I have to take, how many problems I have to face….I will surely achieve my dream.
I am 10 too
And i want to be a marine biologist 🧬🧫
I'm too swimmer
And once a tiny fish bit me
I didn't hurt and that's when I decided

I kinda wanted to do this but this sounds shitty/scary

Your profile picture contradicts the statement you just made
i’m sorry to give a dislike but being a marine biologist is a lifelong dream and these 5 reasons will not stand in my way.

Why dislike the video though 😅
Whoever you are I wish you the best of luck! It has not worked for me I have a lot of experience, but it's game over.
@@Alessandro-zl2uk I'm sorry to hear that :( What did you end up doing after it didn't work out for you?
I WANTED TO GIVE THIS SAME COMMENT....BUT NOW YOU HV ALREADY GIVEN IT!!!!....KEEP UP YOUR SPIRIT...
Currently in the process for my P.h.D in Marine Science. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel! :)
Wow congratulations! I want to get there someday. Any tips?
Ive been wanting to be a marine biologist, or career related to ocean since I was 11-12. Ocean and sea creatures, I wanted to know more about them. But it is hard to do tho. My heart says follow my passion, but my brain says live like normal people
Same I always wanted to work at the ocean I’m still 13 tho but I really wan to work as a marine biologist
I want to became Marine Biologist because of Jotaro...

It's true that is really hard, specially about instability about your future work, about salary, about where you will be living in the next year and so on, but it's also true that we can't go against our desires and passion of living for the ocean. A big hug since the Humboldt Current System!
I've just found your channel, I really enjoy your content! As a novice sailor, I always want to learn more about the seas and how I can take care of the environment (especially the oceans and seas)! Keep them up!!
Thank you! Awesome that you sail. I would love to learn how to properly sail myself. Nice to have you on board!
@@Seamemaria. I have also checked and liked your FB page. I have bought a boat and learning to sail as I intend to sail across the North Pacific from Tokyo to Vancouver to help bring attention to Oceans and experience for myself the Ocean part of our Planet!. I am looking forward to learning what I can from your channel. Thanks for sharing.
so no one is gonna talk how beautiful her eyes are ?
She just beauitful in general
And her hair is gorgeous.
i want to become a biologst but i cant not show my exeptional love for marine life. also i love jojo and jotaro is my second fav character from the whole show bbbbbut ill leave that aside.
Good grief
Thank you for this video! I am Brazilian and I am studying Biological Sciences, I intend to specialize in marine biology because my line of research is cnidarians. This video encouraged me to stay in the area despite the negative parts, because here in my country science is not highly valued.
So great of you to help and share this info, and you are just beautiful, BTW!
It's interested and nice to listen you! thanks
There are many benefits
To being a marine biologist
Hi Maria!!!!😊
I think this video was really informative! But, I wanted to know; from your own personal opinion, do the positive aspects of marine biology affect you more than the negative ones or the other way round? Because I've always believed that your opinion of what you love can't be impacted too much by the disadvantages😊.
Anyway great video!!!😄 and btw I love the shark in the background❤
Depends on the day haha. I am quite happy doing what I am doing at the moment and I don't regret my choices at all =). But sometimes the uncertainty that comes with the job can definitely play tricks in my mind. And it's getting a bit worse the older I get. But on the other hand, I cannot imagine myself working with anything that is not related to the sea. ;)
Is jotaro your work-mate?
I’m sure if jotaro is he doesn’t like her-
No offense btw-

I thought these cons about a career in marine biology only applied in my country (Philippines) lol great video!
We all know we want to be rich while we get old, but the job you are enjoying is enough to live your life and the important thing is to enjoy your journey to the fullest that is what we call happiness.
As an aspiring marine biologist I’m glad you were as honest as possible.
thank u for the advise it helped but am still gonna be a marine biologist and yes ur you tube videos helpled me alot
Hi Maria,
I just discover you chanel and I really like it. That very helpful and I wish you the best and a great success. I'm now a fan.
I wished this video was out when i was done with high school. Unfortunately culture played a big part in my life growing up and it eventually stopped me from pursuing my passions but I am glad that now that I am older I still love and enjoyed my passions about animals.
My dream job
1. Interesting and different every so often, no monotonous and not changing all the time either
2. Work Stability & Good consistent pay
3. Having intelligent and kind coworkers
4. Science based
5. I would rather stay in the lab
Does being a Marine biologist seem right for me
Ok, I'm an anthropologist, so completely different stuff, and it's really interesting how all of this applies to my field as well.
This video was so helpful and insightful. Thank you so much!
Jotaro: I refuse
I'm currently writing a thesis about starfish so this gave me some insight on my dream job
This was super informative, thank you!!
this is unrelated but you are so frickin pretty like your hair color and eye color is so beautiful omg I wish
The hell did you say about jotaro
And I've already dreamt of being a marine biologist...GUESS I JUST NEED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT A HUMUHUMUNUKUNUKUAPUA'A
if you're even searching about being a marine biologist, you should have the passion and that's honestly that's all it takes for a career you love
Im from the Island of Trinidad in the Caribbean an this is my dream job
I am a software dev but I watch your videos because I am a fan of natural science. Particularly biology
Totally helpful, thank you!
Thankyou this was extremely helpful!💙
I love everything about the ocean, I love biology and I love swimming. I think these cons are something I can work with. Every career has its problems
I’m starting my courses for marine sciences this year and I’m beyond excited. Just getting here has taken more strength than I knew I had.
I never skip the ads when I watch her videos because I love this channel so much 😂
When you love the ocean but fears the animals🐋🐬🐳🐟🐳🐚🐙🦀🐠🐡
Was thinking about being a marine biologist, but I love being apart of the ocean and love sea animals💙
Hello & Thank U for that information. My son had his mind set on being a Marine Biologist , Now what I explained to him is me and his mother would have to work two jobs and more to continue tha career. Now he is aware. Same with Basketball. To many competing for tha same position. Not enough room. Ur hair is healthy. Stay Strong and Beautiful in and out
I’d love to get into marine biology. Gives me more reason to get into the dive gear.
Im 16 is it had been my dream since 8 years old hopefully I can become one one day after graduating high school and going to college with scholarships. I love biology and science
I think that the level of competition you will encounter depends on the subject within marine biology. Whales = lots of competition. Plankton = less competition. It isn't a one size fits all because marine biology is very wide and varied.
I don't even listen when she speaks because she is so beautiful and her eyes is gorgeous.
You might have an attention problem lol
Loving the ikea cuddly shark on the bed, I have one too!
Thank you this helped!!
You have beautiful eyes. Also thank you so much for the advice!!! 🙏🙏🙏 really appreciate it
If I become a marine biologist do it require of me to swin in deep oceans? I am interested in studying about aquatic species but I'm scared to swim deep in the ocean
I can't decide if I want to be a veterinarian or a marine biologist.
I plan on going to a college in Florida. Which has rlly good vet schools and has marine biology majors.
I just know I want to do something involving studying animals. I was starting to think about majoring in animal psychology, but I just can't decide. I wish I could do all 😅.
Are we the same person? Are you me from another state?😂
Oh wow I’m interested in the two as well. Veterinarian is my first choice and marine biologist is my back up.
there is an aquatic specialization for a veterinarian cafishvet.com/become-aquatic-veterinarian/, iloveveterinary.com/blog/how-do-you-become-an-aquatic-veterinarian/ and www.iaaam.org/getting-into-aquatic-animal-medicine
They say vet school is harder to get into than medical school 😶
@@maple_vanilla I didnt realize how competitive these fields are, omg. Makes me nervous. 😅
There are so many careers I'd LOVE to go into but I just don't think I could get through one major problem.. School 😅
so i saw a starfish, specifically chocolate chip starfish, after seeing that starfish, i really want to become a marine biologist and see more starfish
I am new to this course and I am now even more intrigued and want to learn more
I graduated with a B.S in Marine Biology in 2020 and cannot find any marine biology-related jobs around northern california that pays more than $18 - $20 (even from Monterey Bay Aquarium).
3. what kind of marine biologist are you(i was thinking marine mammalogy or marine ethology for me)
4. by stable position, does that mean that you stay in one place, or that you have a job(do you have to continuously look for a new job in this field?)?
5. is it a stressful job?
6. is it worth it in the end?
7. is the salary fitting to the amount of work you put in?
I was thinking of becoming one once you told I said I’ll change my mind
My plan was to volunteer while in school to build up my experience and the school i want to go to has some field experience too
I have 2 more years before I can start volunteering so think you for this video
These are the same 5 reason not to become a comic book artist lol. Great video
I always hate it with a passion when a job requires you to work for free for a CHANCE at getting employed. That’s so messed up especially if they decide to take advantage with no intention of hiring from the start in some cases. Work that makes money should always be paid fairly.
Ty for cutting the future competition
I’m gonna be a marine biologist but focus on the deeper parts of the ocean below 200 meters and about half of my explorations are gonna be in the trenches below 6,000 meters because I really want to explore the deep.
I’m also going to try and run a business and try to discover new species so I can get paid alot more than normal and because I’m exploring the unexplored parts and hopefully because of my business I won’t have to move I can just live where I live in Ontario Canada and travel for work and explorations.
