  • We have begun field testing the Spot robot for commercial usage around the world. After an initial mapping run, Spot autonomously navigated two dynamic construction sites in Tokyo and used a specialized payload for surveying work progress. An additional camera in its hand lets Spot do even more detailed inspection work on site. The Spot robot will be available in the second half of 2019 for a variety of applications.

    It would be a big help to know more about the autonomous vs guided aspects of these tests. Here are some questions:
    Does a human command the robot to perform every action during the mapping phase? What kinds of mapping-related commands are available?
    When the robot is navigating autonomously, what are its goals and instructions? Will it revisit the entire mapped space?
    What kinds of tasks can it undertake while acting autonomously?

    • @RijuChatterjee
      @RijuChatterjee 5 лет назад +124

      Thing is, these are all software capabilities, that can be developed over time and will become more relevant as a clear commercial application for the robot emerges. Right now, Boston dynamics seems most focused on developing capabilities in mobility, dexterity, and perception. The stringing together of these for high-level autonomous functionality can then later be done by a 16-year old in his basement, if and when it becomes clear what exactly the robot is going to be used for..

    • @RalphDratman

      I'd say the human controller is walking right behind it but it would be little different if they were remote, given the cameras. The autonomous part isn't really here to decide. That comes down to what is available. We've already seen problem solving autonomous versions including ones that work in tandem with others.

      Mass unemployment and suicide

    • @zandovic
      @zandovic 5 лет назад +1

      Unemployment wouldn't be a problem if everything were to be done by robots. They could just supply humans then! Just replace real farmers with robots farms, real construction workers with robot construction workers etc. Life will be the same as before but people won't need to work anymore.

    • @epicn
      @epicn 5 лет назад

      Too many people associate robots with artificial intelligence. Just because it moves doesn’t mean it has a mind of its own. At the same time, artificial intelligence is not developed to the point where it can replace jobs either. Both of these things are simply tools, and there must be humans to operate/program them. While there will be some jobs that are replaced because robots can do them more efficiently, I do not agree that the outcome will be mass unemployment because there will be many jobs created for the purpose of making, programming, and maintaining these robots and AI.

They believe in it so much that their lives revolve around it to the point where people ruin their future because of it. That’s the problem, it’s why the perfect robot utopia you describe is sadly impossible.

      There is a chance robots will also prepare places for us to live in space before they kill us all down here, if nukes don't first, if bio-weapons don't first, if famine doesn't first, you get it. The aftermath of an interchange of a couple dozen bombs like the one dropped on Hiroshima would wipe most of humanity and we have tens of thousands of them waiting for two rival despots mad enough to launch them. I will only worry that we won't be able (we won't have time) to make robots smart enough to outlast us.

    • @tyry95
      @tyry95 5 лет назад +2

      @Jeffrey Spinner Robots are already heavily involved in war, but to imply that they're intelligent is very false. I will most likely be dying of old age before an intelligent robot joins up in war. Right now scientists can barely simulate 1% of the brain of a worm, and it takes more than an hour to render. What's most likely to happen is that the military will attempt their own design in 20 years, to be remote controlled in warzones. What's the difference between this and unmanned drones?
      Propaganda implies they have a hidden agenda here, right? But right now you're assuming a lot and so am I. Try finding out who funds Boston Dynamics maybe?
      I think this has a thousand uses other than war, and I'm looking forward to it.

    • @DamianReloaded
      @DamianReloaded 5 лет назад

      @Tyler W. The rate at which artificial neural networks will become more powerful is tied to the rate at which we build specialized hardware for them. Which we are already doing. The robots we have right now would do a way better Normandy landing than humans did, would cost less and any lack of intelligence would be compensated by sheer numbers. We could build tens of millions of these dogs with a machine gun for head and the vision system of a tesla and you'd own Germany in a day.
