  • Our (literally) unplugged rendition of a macabre Scottish ballad on All Hallows' Eve 2023.
    "Are Ye Sleepin', Maggie?" was written in the Scots language by the Scottish poet Robert Tannahil (1774-1810).
    Since Tannahill was a cotton weaver by trade, we chose to interweave his song with the popular Irish reel known as "Drowsy Maggie", and named this interwoven fabric "Are Ye Drowsy, Maggie?".
    Below are the eerie lyrics. Enjoy!
    .....................................................................................................
    Lyrics:
    Mirk an’ rainy is the nicht,
    there’s no’ a staum in a’ the carry.
    Lichtnin’s gleam athwart the lift;
    the cauld winds drive wi’ winter’s fury.
    Chorus:
    Oh, are ye sleepin’ Maggie?
    Oh, are ye sleepin’ Maggie?
    Let me in for loud the linn
    Is howlin’ ower the Warlock's Craigie.
    Fearfu’ soughs the boortree bank,
    The rifted wood roars wild and dreary.
    Loud the iron yett does clank,
    The cry of hoolits mak’s me eerie.
    Abune my breath I daumae speak
    For fear I rouse your waukrife daddy.
    Cauld’s the blast upon my cheek;
    Arise, arise, my bonnie lady.
    (instrumental)
    Chorus:
    Oh, are ye drowsy Maggie?
    Oh, are ye drowsy Maggie?
    Let me in for loud the linn
    Is howlin’ ower the Warlock's Craigie.
    She’s op’d the door, she’s let me in,
    She’s cuist aside me dreepin’ plaidie.
    Blaw your worst, ye rain or wind?
    For Maggie noo I’m here aside ye.
    Final chorus:
    Noo since you’re waukened, Maggie,
    Noo since you’re waukened, Maggie,
    What care I for howlet’s cry,
    For boortree banks or the Warlock’s Craigie?

      Thanks! And yeah, it was our first recording of this type, so that might be the reason why. Hopefully it's much better in the newer ones (and all that will follow) 😅
