Yes, I was thinking the same thing. He didn't make it clear, and it did sound as if he was offering his father a chance to invest money in his company instead of offering to actually help his parents by giving them money or buying the house from them. It did sound rather sketchy. I would have been hesitant, too.

So Matthew was already successful at that meal where he and his dad fell out? How Mathew kept that to himself that day is either really impressive, or really stupid. Although I doubt his dad would have believed him even if he told him he'd already made his 1st million. And if his dad really cared, or really wanted to rub salt in his sons wounds if the company failed, he would have scoured every inch of every tech magazine he could find! The fact he didn't shows he didn't care, and that he doubted his son from the get, and that's just heartbreaking.
I am so glad his mum finally woke up and kicked that awful man, and dreadful father, to the kerb! The fact she's now living the high life in Matthew's penthouse is just the icing on the cake!

It just goes to show ya... When it comes to things always changing one way or another, you should learn to change with it no matter how hard it may be. Because being stubborn about it will get you nowhere. And it looks like Robert will have to learn that the hard way.

Dad sees sons face on Forbes magazine. "Funny that looks a lot like my failure of a son. Strange he even has the same name. But there's no way that's my son. This gentleman is dressed way too nice and looks to good to be my failure of a son. It's just a coincidence that they share the same name." Dad would then laugh. Wife asked what he's laughing about and says that he saw a picture of a successful guy in Forbes that looked like Mathew. But there loser son will never be on it.

And then the father, heartbroken at the loss of his wife and loathing himself for his failures in his own career and his b parenting, took his life. His son realized too late that h e had hidden the truth about his company from his father, distorting his father's p we perception, and then had ruthlessly punished his father for that distorted perception. His heart ached at the thought of the joy they could have shared if he had been truthful about why he was dropping out of college. His heart also bled for his mother, who tried to stay cheerful but who pined for the husband who died hating himself.

    • @MrRevilnemesis

He didn't ruthless punish his father at all. The father did nothing but assume he was broke and insulted the OP right out of the gate because OP didn't follow in his footsteps. It isn't the fault of the abused if the abuser kills themselves.

This was disappointing. I’m usually on the side of the kid and somehow this story didn’t change that. I did feel a tiny bit bad for the dad. I can’t imagine life where I failed to stand by my son, in back of him when needed, or in front of him blocking whatever gets thrown at him. This son never tried to win over his dad. I’m not saying he should have, except, when he called his father to help, he never tried to win him over. Seriously, what did he expect out of their dialog of disappointments about each other? I have an almost endless supply of negative comments about the father and his failures of being a dad. But OP knew all of this before talking to him. OP never gave his father a chance to do anything but fail. And, OP’s mom had made her choice to be on her son’s side (lady, you were on your son’s side - that’s where each parent should have been anyway.). So when OP contacted his dad last time, OP knew he already has his mom and was ready to throw pop away. OP only spoke to his father that second time just so he could true fully say he did. The only way OP would have helped his pop was if the man groveled and begged, and that was not going to happen. With all my criticism of OP, OP was still much nicer than I would have been. The dad received better treatment than he deserved.

Parents invest everything into these kids going to college so when they drop out, it is reasonable tor the parents to be pissed, especially the one who paid the money. So Matthew decides to not disclose his success before he left then came back sounding like an MLM salesman. Seems to me that Matthew never gave his dad a chance to understand what was going on,
