The wasteland booklet mentioned in the video was also used as copy protection. The game asked you to lookup a specific page in the booklet in order to progress.
In a similar vein, a lot of the later Elder Scrolls games owe their success to the mechanics pioneered in the Ultima franchised then forgotten by like 20 years of RPGs. The 80s really were a haven for the RPG scene.
Welcome back, king. Kinda wild how little info there is on Fountain of Dreams. It's basically lost media despite Wasteland making a comeback. Would love a dedicated video on that.
Listening to these old stories and interviews on their direction, im convinced no one actually knows whats going on at any given moment. Everything makes sense now.
This was a seriously cool crash course! I love all the references! I've only ever played Wasteland 2 and 3. So some of them I got, but many were roght from the first game!
First of all I hope everything improves for you and your loved one, have a beautiful day my amigo. You know, I'm quite impressed that the Fallout community sometimes uses Wasteland resources (character names, game events, location names) to make mods like Oldworldblues for Hoi4 or Fallout New California or Fallout Sonora and I would say Nova Arizona too, I even made a faction icon for my project that was from the desert rangers where General Snake Vargas appears with the FNV desert ranger armor. Wasteland walked so Fallout could run. Thanks for the great video amigo:)
I'm really surprised you didn't mention Knight Titus in the toaster section, "This wasteland fucking sucks. The clerics, too. With their bullshit. Sending me on stupid missions for remnants that turn out to be... ...a fucking toaster oven. You know what you could do with a fucking toaster oven? Do you have any idea?"
I tried to play wasteland when the remake came out but I kept dying in the first combat scene with the crazy farmer and the pests and couldn't figure out why so I gave up after 3 days xD
Im fairly certain that the Lester More grave is a tombstone reference. If I remember correctly there's a similar message on one of the tombstones in the movie
I like to believe what Cain initally said at GDC was mostly true. His 2nd statement doesn't conflict too much with it either. He said "almost everyone played Wasteland" and later says "some did, some didn't". Sounds like he was just being more realistic upon retrospection.
Fountain of Dreams is a fun little game that doesn't get enough credit. It would be nice to see it officially reincorporated into the Wasteland franchise at some point even though it wasn't a Brian Fargo project, it certainly fits in with the other three Wasteland titles at this point.
I think you're the only person I've ever heard say that it doesn't get enough credit and it makes me happy. Frustrating sure, but the brutality matches the setting
@@TriangleCity I'm just happy to see you doing your due diligence in playing it for some Wasteland-related content on your channel. Most people ignore it exists entirely when talking about Wasteland even though it is an official sequel/spiritual successor in the eyes of the IP owner (EA) at the time, with a setting, gameplay and an engine that is almost identical. I always thought it'd be neat if they did a remake for Fountain of Dreams like the Wasteland 1 remake by Krome Studios, but as far as I know Brian Fargo doesn't care for FoD much at all, I wonder if he even bothered to play it, I guess he'd also have to buy the IP from EA for Fountain of Dreams (since legally it is distinct from the Wasteland IP rights that he owns at InXile, afaik) as well, but I imagine it'd probably be pretty cheap to acquire. It'd be cool if you did a full scale deep dive video on Fountain of Dreams and its relations to Wasteland.
@Telemarathon It being a sequel is actually kinda nebulous from my research. Mechanically it's a Wasteland clone, but from what I can tell it was never named as a sequel in any marketing and one of the devs I talked to said they were always making a game like Wasteland, not a Wasteland sequel
@@TriangleCity I haven't actually done proper research on that point so I will concede to your judgement on it. I remember hearing/reading that it was essentially EA making a Wasteland sequel without the original creators involved, and when there was something about legal issues to do with the possibility of the engine for Fountain of Dreams being stolen code from Wasteland's development (the authorship/copyrighting was split in multiple places or something, even though EA owned Wasteland at the time) they dropped the official sequel angle entirely and made it as legally distinct an IP as possible. I'm definitely not sure how true any of that is or which parts are disproven hearsay at this point, particularly why I'd like to see an in-depth documentary about the game and its development, though I imagine that for you it would have limited appeal to your viewerbase considering the game (FoD) is merely a cousin of the father (Wasteland) of the game series (Fallout) your channel is mainly about.
Yeah I actually wrote a documentary on it lol, but I doubt I'll ever make it because of how little interest there would be in it sadly. I wish I had a rich boomer patron who would pay me to make super niche content lol
I had a blast playing wasteland, now i yearn for more games like it. Im keen in their next project Clockwork Revolution, the transition to steampunk would be the best ideal theme and world building after Wasteland, the game design will even translate well.
I recently have been playing wasteland 3, and I gotta say, there are some parts where it feels like they did not even playtest the game (I was playing on ranger difficulty, so not super hardcore). The animal companion AI is atrocious, which could’ve been fixed by just allowing you to control them or making them not take part in combat. This wouldnt be a huge issue if not for the fact that an NPC that’s part of a lengthy sidequest uses this AI package, forcing you to bend over backwards to keep him alive. It plays like Xcom, but the problem is that your squadmates are not as replaceable as Xcom soldiers, forcing many a reload (or new playthrough if on Ironman mode). There are a lot of elements that you have to go into the game with good faith to enjoy or in some cases, tolerate, but the problem is that so many encounters a ludicrously unbalanced (like the fact that smugglers from the third quest in the main quest can go toe to toe with a level 11 party and win half the time, though this was compounded by the aforementioned animal companion issue) that it frustrates you into not liking a lot of the game for a certain amount of time
And then there are the encounters at your base, which are just bad. Nothing much to say other than that. You’re usually forced to interact with them, and you are basically asked to do an evil thing for a good reward, or not do that for literally no reward, because wasteland is dark and griddy unlike fallout where you can be a good guy and be rewarded for it. There’s also an encounter that basically forces you to fall for an ambush despite the fact that your character can see that something’s up with high enough stats, and it just reeks of when you’re playing a tabletop rpg with a bad dm and you see a twist coming, but get railroaded into doing something that doesn’t make sense, and end up getting punished for it, because the DM wanted to feel clever for pulling one over on you and isn’t going to let that be ruined. A lot of wasteland just left me unsatisfied in general, whether it was with my options for completing quests, to the endings, to the design of some encounters, it was all just very unsatisfying; the whole game is basically everything I didn’t like about fallout tactics and Xcom put into one package, but I still keep playing it because I still like both games, even at their worst
If I had to guess Muties and Children of the Atom are both X-men references as those terms have been part of that franchise much longer than either Wasteland or Fallout have existed. Great video tho.
@Phreno_Xeno I'm not mad at all. Just saying that it's essentially a forgotten game because no one plays it anymore. Sure people know it exists, but I don't think many people know much about it
Holocaust and Adventure are two things that should not be together on the same phrase.... and less on a viseogame cover, maybe thats the reason why: Fallout a Post Nuclear Role Playing Game..... its longer BUT does not deceive
My dad introduced me to Wasteland and OG Fallout decades ago, when Wasteland 3 came out we played it together it was a really fun experience.
That's an amazing story 🖤 grateful you guys could bond over it

Some of the tricks in it were hilarious. There's a false password at one point and using it in game changes your characters gender lol

Isn't the Red Ryder BB gun a reference to A Christmas Story?
Yes it is. Tim Cain talked about that on his channel before
Interesting. That makes me wonder which weapon he was referencing in that interview then
The Red Ryder is also, you know, a real BB gun; originally released in '38.
I know. Just seemed possible to me considering Tim teased a weapon from Wasteland and the BB gun was pretty well known in the WL community
@ Oh yeah, I was speaking generally rather than specifically to you.
My older brother never liked Fallout 1 or 2 because he was such a fan of Wasteland growing up, lol.

The story of how they picked China over Russia is hilarious and super interesting at the same time.

Good to see you on RUclips again!

Really enjoying this vid - great work! I knew about Wasteland, but never dug into it so lots of new info here I didn't know.
If you can get past the frustration of the older mechanics, I'd recommend playing it sometime. You can see so much of Fallout in it :)
Stayed up late playing Fallout and was rewarded with this great video.
It's great to see you posting again.

Zax and Vax are both references to the real life VAX Mainframes from DEC

Wasteland was pretty cool. Glad it helped us get fallout and gotten sequels
The Guardians of the Old Order wear red robes and hoard/worship old technology... sounds like the Adeptus Mechanicus
