I think people uses the name for an excuse, it happened the same with the R7, honestly i don't care at all about naming, it only matters if the bike is good for rhe price
It doesn't bother me per say, but I do think they should have called it a sprint 660, and reserve the Daytona for a performance model with upgraded suspenders and engine
@alexpryce555 that would have made a lot more sense. I wonder if we will get another triumph trophy. Looks like the sprint may have been the replacement for the Trophy. 900 sprint looks like a nice bike actually 1998 model with the twin round headlamps
Good to see you back RM! As far as the name goes when I think triumph Daytona I think 60s, early 70s 500cc twin, a friend of mine had an orange 73 he rode from Florida to Atlanta no problem. Of course I'm old 😅
Just wanted to say, now that your channel has become one of the bigger ones, I really appreciate how you’ve stuck to your original personable approach and that you still reply to the majority of comments in a personal way, no generic reply. I just ordered the Transalp here in Tokyo, you helped me figure it was the best for where I am and how I ride. Now I need to look for my wife’s bike😁 P.s. I’m no triumph fan, but I love that a euro maker is finally making bikes in the average mans price range while keeping euro quality. If nothing else, making the Japanese brands step up to the plate.
Thanks for your kind words of encouragement, it's always nice to know that my videos are appreciated :) The Transalp is a great bike. I really enjoyed my year with it and only really sold it because I was looking to have fewer vehicles to look after. Enjoy :)
@@RocketMan_Moto Im sure I will, I understand you going back to 1 bike and wanting to keep the power. 91hp is definitely the high end for Japan, should fit me just like the tiger does your situation.
I love the simplistic side profile of it. I find many bikes too fusy. Engine seems better than the other Triumph 660s - if only they upgraded the engines in their other 660s to match.
7:45 with the quick shifter the the Dayton is still $2000 less than the base model RS660 and I sincerely doubt the situation is much different in the European markets.
Seems like a nice option, especially for those of us who ride them lots in the real world. Plenty of power, looks good, not too expensive, and that triple sound. Calling it Daytona is fine by me as it's a good name and you'll know what it is by name alone, even if it isn't quite as high strung as the last one.
Using the Daytona moniker is similar to what Triumph did with the faux twin-spar covers on the sides of the frame - both pretend to be something the bike is not. As someone mentioned in another review, using Sprint would have been a good choice. It's always been sport-bike light (sport tourer). Your characterization of the dash is spot on. I don't find it unbearable, but your reference to '70s cars (for me it's the AMC range) hit the nail on the head. Just look at that Suzuki - aside from the headlights, it's a very good looking bike, showing off its subframe. Thanks for the review.
To be honest, the "real bike" was my Daytona 955i in iconic yellow colour I bought in 1999. It was a true racer and I get goosebumps when I remember riding it too fast on too narrow roads. As time and age went on I distanced myself from that type of bike, looking for more comfort to the old bones. To me the new "Daytona" looks boring and doesn't attract me at all. The CBR looks like a CBR and the Aprilia looks great - that's how a Sportsbike should look. So, thanks for the show as always 👍🏻
I bought Daytona 660 and I love it. I was looking for midweight sporty bike with triple soundtrack and flat torque curve. Wind protection is perfect from my perspective. My head is in clean air while fairing provides enough protection to make highway ride comfortable. I only wish it to be a bit more upright. Probably it will take a year or so before clip-on risers hit the market. Also, I'm waiting on quick shifter to become available.
Got my Daytona this week I'm 5'6" & find it a good fit, went for the low seat option.quick shifter arrived but cannot fit as delays on fixing bracket😢.love it so far, had a Street triple 765 before but it's a different bike in comparison.
I bought this bike and I love it. Its the perfect blend between comfort and sport. I love the engine. I think the wind protection is good. No quickshifter in stock anywhere though. Dash is behind the times but gets the job done.
Your point on the name being a questionable marketing choice is spot on. People have an emotional attachment to vehicles and the name therein. Perhaps the Sebring would have been another choice. Here in the states, Chevy came out with a midsize front wheel drive, four cylinder powered SUV and named it the Blazer. Well anyone who remembers the old Blazer, a large, tough, 4 wheel drive on and off road vehicle powered by the ubiquitous Chevy V8 hates the use of such a storied name which relegates the prospective buyer pool to soccer moms and people with no automotive knowledge.
I don’t understand why people getting so upset over the name! They haven’t called it Daytona 675!!! It’s called Daytona 660! Just like tiger 800,900 and 1200 they are all different bikes, i currently have vfr800 Vtech I bought it thinking my mrs may come out ride with me but it didn’t happen, I don’t think she is interested so I’m looking to replace it with another bike soon.I have tried inline 4, V4 and twin so next bike is going to be triple but not sure which one yet, I like new street triple 765 and new Yamaha mt09 and this bike came along I know it’s a class below those bikes in terms of power and price but certainly nice looking bike, I need to test ride one soon and see what is the comfort like for me.
Great review as always, RM. When the Tiger Sport came out a few years ago I was really excited as it ticked a lot of the right boxes. But I was totally underwhelmed by the motor and found it a bit buzzy. I had a '09 675 Street Triple R and loved that bike! You would hit about 6k rpm on the tach and the bike would take off up to redline. In my experience, the 660 motor is linear and not as fun as the 675 engine even though power wise they are not too far away.
Completely agree with you there RocketMan Its seriously shouldn't be called a Daytona fact!! And there's the Dash again wrong on this bike!! Then the paint something we mention quite a lot as it would look very nice indeed if it was all white as again mudguard is black rear end is black & the wheels are black not really my cuppa tea all be it for a first timer not us older chap's hehe? I would rather the Rs 660 Colour scheme bang on just as shame about the finish as this for me would be the pick of your choices!!👌🏻👍🏻
@RocketMan_Moto Yeah I'm sure you would sacrifice a certain motorcycle manufacturer that's closer to you than have to leave the place that you love living!!👌🏻👍🏻😎
And you even get a slice of orange stuck on the caliper for when you stop for a break! Good video. Doubt I'd be interested in buying that bike though. Would love a go on one though
A Good review on the merits of $10k sports bike! All I would add is that the "Daytona" name dates back to the late '60's. At that time, it was only a T100 with hotter cams, twin carburetors and a close ratio transmission. The current bike follows this 57 year old formula. Hopefully, it will sell in numbers that the marvellious 675 could not achieve
I recently bought the Suzuki GSX-8R after heavily comparing it to the Daytona. In the end the Suzuki was more what I wanted, basically naked bike ergonomics with some wind protection and enough power to be entertaining on the street.
White is one of my favorite colors, too. I hate it on cars, love it on bikes. It's one of my favorite bike colors. I think anybody who rides a bike that is black should be flogged, but as they say, "this is a matter of taste." Flogging the guy , I mean, is a matter of taste.😁 Maybe because as a boy my first bike was white, and the color white imprinted on me like a baby duck. 🦆🐤 I hadn't heard of this bike at all, until now. They souped it up! Good on them! The 660 Tiger is just a 660 Trident with a fairing and a couple grand added to its price. ps, any bike that goes 0-60 in 5.7 seconds or less, is a quick bike, and under 4 seconds is a really fast bike.
I sat on a daytona 660 and rs660 today. Side by side comparison. On paper i like the rs660 more with its more premium equipment, but the daytona 660 fits my body more. A lot more natural position. It looks more generic compared to the aprilia, but i think itll age better because its not overly designed. Most of my miles are commuting miles, so im not looking for what can be the most supersport-y.
I testrode this bike and loved the handling and the engine. That triple is so smooth. But i didnt like the riding position. Im 6’2 with a long upperbody so for me its to cramped and to much lent forward riding position. You cant rise the bars either. Its not as bad as the R7. The Daytona is similar in riding position to the Honda cbr650r but felt the honda more comfy and roomy but want more torque down below. Its sad because the Honda CBR650R is so beautiful. The best comfy bike with higher bars i testrode was the Suzuki GSX8R. Its more like a sporttourer but with better pricetag. It handled great but not sure of that front looks. Felt the engine a little quirky at lower rpms. The best engine for me overall is the triple bacause i want a smooth engine that handles great in lower rpms. Triumph if you listen you have to make i bigger roamier bike for us that are not interesting in track racing but just love the looks of a sporty bikes with fairings. Testrode the ninjasx1000 years ago and loved it but its to pricey. Want that bike in800-900 cc better priced and lower insurance cost. Also have tried the Aprilia 660 Tuono and that was a great riding position but im not sure about the engine its not as smooth as the Triumph Triple.
Think you are right, I said as much on another review, taking a bit of stick for saying that it's not a worthy Daytona , My Son had a 2005 955i Daytona, 147 bhp fully adjustable showa suspension, single sided swingarm! Fantastic sport bike for the roads.
Triumph's naming conventions have been screwed up since day 1 of the resurrection in 1991. The only names they properly matched to the bike was the Bonneville and Thruxton. Even then, the T100 and T120 stuff was confusing, because a T100 was a 500, a size down from the biggest twin. But from 2001-2015 they put the T100 name on the BIGGEST TWIN, not the 2nd biggest. The modern T100 should be a T120, the modern T120 should be a T140. The rest of the classic names -- Thunderbird, Tiger, Daytona, are all over the map, what they've slapped the names onto. For chrissakes the Rocket 3 was a BSA, not even a Triumph.
As a Triumph owner I can’t agree that it’s a bad call from Triumph to use the Daytona name for a lesser bike. The super bike trend isn’t there in the segment any more (it is but not that it would make economical sense to Triumph) so it makes sense to make a more approachable bike instead. But if the buyers scream for a more powerful Daytona, Triumph could easily make it possible to fit components that would make it more powerful and with better forks etc. there IS a pack with different forks for those that would like to race the Daytona. So all hope isn’t lost.
Nice review, grounded in the real world. I am still young enough to go sporty (bearly), but decided to go over the top with a SuperDuke GT. In this class I would try the Honda or the Suzuki. To name this daily driver after a track weapon is not a good idea in my book.
I simply have to conclude that I am not in the target market for this bike. I'm 45 years old, and wanted last year to upgrade from my Street Triple 675R and scratch the sportbike itch. I would have definitely tested this if it had been out, but I don't think it would have swayed my decision to buy my 2022 BMW S1000RR, which is both a great sport tourer and an unompromised superbike, with enough comfort for me. I know it's more expensive but if I could have found something I liked cheaper it would still be worth comparing. The point is that there are no 660-ish capacity sportbikes with all the features (active suspension, lean-sensitive ABS etc) found on the flagship superbikes. As shown here, this new class of middleweights tends to be rather budget. I would have happily bought the plush, gorgeous and fast Speed Triple 1200 RR if it didn't require younger knees, I don't understand how Triumph priced that to my generation but with Gen-Z ergonomics.. I do think the Tiger 900 could be in my future though!
They should have called this one The Trident Sport (ahhh, you say that in the video ! I hadn't fully listenned to the vid before I typed !) , and save the Daytona name for a 765cc , 130BHP "weapon" of a bike ( if they chose to put that into production again )
It looks cracking just as my Trident was, but I'm going to be predictable and bemoan the lack of a 765 Daytona. I suspect we'll see all these upgrades on a Trident R, and I think that would sell very well. Personally I think they should have resurrected the Sprint name.
Very honest balanced as ever RM. Don't understand the name thing ussue,.. Daytona along with tiger Bonneville trident rocket 3 etc all hark back to the 60s. 🤷
As I get older, I find myself looking for more comfort, the Daytona would be no good for me, as soon as you mentioned firm suspension, my interest in owning one wanes. Currently I've got a Suzuki GSX-8s, which, to be honest, I'm finding a tad too sporty. I'm looking at an ADV bike and was interested in your Tiger/Transalp commentary previously. It would be good to hear your opinion on the Suzuki 800DE, as I am in the middle of making my mind up re the Transalp/Tiger/Tenure/DE800. Budget isn't the main factor (I still wouldn't buy a BMW) as I am hoping to keep this bike for a long time. Primarily I want a smooth back road ride with the ability to do some dirt roads.
Well, I'm very happy with my Transalp + Speed Twin = Tiger 900 move. The Tiger offers exactly what I want now: comfort, enough power for any situation, acceptable wind protection and decent range from its 20-litre tank. Maybe not the sexiest bike ever made, but when you're 300 miles from home, you don't care about sexy, lol :)
a few years back I got a go of a Thruxton and a CB650R. Maybe I'm old ( well mid 50s) , I just can't handle the sports bike position for more than 20 mins. How the hell John McGuinness and Michael Rutter, who are only a few years younger than me , can still do 6 laps of the Isle of Man, at not too far off Hicky and Michael Dunlop's pace, sure beats the hell out of me ! ( my conclusion is IoM racers are nutcases, but still ! )
I've never even sat on a street bike. I imagine it feels like a drop bar road bicycle... And no thank you to that. I still ride my drop bar bicycle... But I ride it to be physically challenged. I don't need that on a machine with a motor. I do think the Daytona looks the business though. Has something about it that I don't see in other sport bikes. If I had a large amount of excess cash, I'd buy one, and take it around the block occasionally. Nothing more.
Wouldn’t suit me personally, as it’s too compact, but for a smaller rider it would be fine. Luggage options are a bit limited if that’s your thing, though😊
You say Daytona and I think Ferrari. Being cross over that name is the silliest thing I’ve heard in quite some time. Either you like the bike or you don’t, if the name bothers you that much you might need to have a cup of tea and relax a bit, maybe go out and ride a bike rather than look at more RUclips.
If the fanboys would put the money where their mouth was, the Daytona 675 and the Daytona 765 Moto 2 edition wouldn't have been cancelled due to poor sales. This means those loud fanboys are literally a vocal minority and we have the receipts to show for it. Most of the time when company fails to launch a new product in the new internet age, is when business can't separate real customers with loud minority internet fanboy complaints. As Steve Jobs once famously said and paraphrasing - don't ask what the customer want, look at what they do. That's because customers will tell you all sorts of things like they WANT a hardcore track focus sports bike, but when push comes to shove, they buy a much more "sensible" bike cos hey reality came kicking down the door and they can't afford one or can only own one bike etc etc. We saw it ourselves - the 600cc middle class track bikes were "dream bikes" for many, but most people just ended up getting the sensible usable road sports 650 Ninjas or Honda.
You are getting hung up on the name ... but this bike isn't for you. Its for new riders, its an entry bike. And new riders don't remember the old Daytona.

Nothing beats a litre bike. I agree about the Speed RR, an odd market placement.
They should have called this one The Trident Sport (ahhh, you say that in the video ! I hadn't fully listenned to the vid before I typed !) , and save the Daytona name for a 765cc , 130BHP "weapon" of a bike ( if they chose to put that into production again )
Agreed
Good review. I miss my GSX-R 750
Have you seen Michael Neeves' channel? He recently bought a crash-damaged 750 to restore. Top bloke.
@@RocketMan_Moto No I have not I will have to look it up
cool 👍👍👍
😊
It should also be considered, that the price of accessories does not include the mounting.....
You’re right, although I find dealers will often throw in labour as part of the deal
I agree, the Daytona name is a mistake. How about the "Triumph Laguna Seca"?
That could work
It looks cracking just as my Trident was, but I'm going to be predictable and bemoan the lack of a 765 Daytona.
I suspect we'll see all these upgrades on a Trident R, and I think that would sell very well.
Personally I think they should have resurrected the Sprint name.
Yes, Sprint seems to have a lot of backing👍
Very honest balanced as ever RM.
Don't understand the name thing ussue,.. Daytona along with tiger Bonneville trident rocket 3 etc all hark back to the 60s. 🤷
True, but they’re all improvements over previous generations🤔
@@RocketMan_Moto Oh yes , point taken 👍
i would love to try a cbr650r because im 1.84cm tall and i really dont know if the bikes would fit me properly
Should be ok. It’s roomier than the Daytona, and the riding position is less sporty
@@RocketMan_Motoha, yes , last time I was sexy was 1992.
👍😂
I'm still interested in sport bikes even though my childhood was in the 50s and 60s. No "beak" bikes for me.
Good for you😊👍
@@RocketMan_Moto Cheers! I find 2-3 hours of twisties more gratifying than "mile gobbling".
a few years back I got a go of a Thruxton and a CB650R.
( my conclusion is IoM racers are nutcases, but still ! )
It is an acquired taste🤔
@@RocketMan_Moto yeah !
👍
How would you feel about riding all day every day on this bike ?
Wouldn’t suit me personally, as it’s too compact, but for a smaller rider it would be fine. Luggage options are a bit limited if that’s your thing, though😊
I think using their old Sprint name would have been more accurate
Sprint seems to be the most popular option👍
Poverty spec. Nice
😉
I don't like the bike. I always enjoy your videos. I'm back in Portugal. Nick
Thanks :)
Thanks for your input
That instrument panel is terrible. Even kawasaki on most of their cheap bikes now have the excellent tft.
Agreed, it lets the rest of the bike down
If the fanboys would put the money where their mouth was, the Daytona 675 and the Daytona 765 Moto 2 edition wouldn't have been cancelled due to poor sales.
Good point
The looks are so out dated. Gimme a Speed Tripple over that thing any day. Of course thats apples to oranges I understand.
I would take the Street Triple over this, too
You are getting hung up on the name ... but this bike isn't for you. Its for new riders, its an entry bike. And new riders don't remember the old Daytona.
True enough, but people have been getting ‘hung up’ about the new Ford Capri for the same reasons😉
@@RocketMan_Moto The new Ford Capri is an affront to God. This is not the same thing.
