  • This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new Lexus TX 550h+ plug-in (PHEV) 3-row mid-size luxury SUV. The Lexus TX 550h+ is a plug-in hybrid with 53 km/33 miles of electric vehicle range.
IThe Lexus TX 550h+t has a 3.5L V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain matched to a CVT with a combined 404 horsepower. When the battery is depleted, Lexus says, it will get an estimated 7.8L/100 km, 30 MPG.
With an increasing demand for a large 3-row family hauler this category whether luxury or non-luxury is highly competitive. Unfortunately, the RX L didn’t cut it for space which is why Lexus has introduced the TX which has best in class storage. Lexus says, they focused on a practical design and believes the TX will be its third best seller behind the NX and RX. Two thirds of the Lexus fleet is now electrified and electrified vehicle sales are up for Lexus. In Canada electrified sales account for 54% vs. 34% in 2022. The UX hybrid sales are up 84%, NX hybrid up 49% and the RX hybrid up 224%.
Pricing has not been announced for the Lexus TX 550h+ as this vehicle will not hit dealerships until next year.
The Lexus TX 550h+ F Sport is the sportiest of the TX models with exclusive F Sport features including F Sport badging you see on our test model.
The TX 500h has a 2.4L turbocharged hybrid powertrain with a 6-speed automatic transmission, a combined 366 horsepower and standard DIRECT4 AWD. Official fuel economy numbers have not been released yet but Lexus is reporting an estimated combined fuel economy of 9.8L/100 km, 24 MPG.
In the US, the TX 350 FWD model starts at $55,050 USD/AWD $56,650 USD, TX 350 Premium FWD $58,450 USD/AWD $60,050 USD, TX 350 Luxury FWD $60,950 USD/AWD $62,550 USD, TX 500h F Sport Performance Premium AWD $69,350 USD and TX 500h F Sport Performance Luxury AWD $72,650 USD.

Thanks for the review! Don't forget folks, this CVT is not a belt/chain and cone device, it is a planetary gear power split unit, which is essentially bulletproof vs the type of CVT virtually everyone is familiar with.

Exactly! Good call out. I was thinking the same thing. I think they call it ECVT and not just CVT. I have the 2022 NX350h and I got no complaints. I used to have a Murano so I know what having a 💩 CVT is like😂

It drives just as boring/bad as any other CVT unfortunately. It was the first question I asked on the test drive and the salesman told me it wasn’t, which surprised me at the time. I’m glad this video set the record straight.

@@MrnovanovaYep, ECVT is correct (or maybe E-CVT, but whatever.) Another poster says this drives like a normal CVT but I was only trying to combat people's fears about unreliable CVTs. Glad yours drives well.

Good review for the high trim level 2024 Lexus TX 550H+. For mid-size third row seating SUVs, this one is either the most spacious or one of the spacious ones. That's good this trim level has the V6 engine. Regardless of trim level the Lexus TX came with new features and upgrades. At the same time, myself, other people and car reviewers wished some other features that's found on some of the competitor vehicles came with this vehicle. Few months ago back in July, I got the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L in the Summit Reserve trim. My vehicle has some features that are MIA on the Lexus TX regardless of which trim level TX. The features include the following:
    1. Massaging front seats
    2. Front passenger
    infotainment screen
    3. Interior camera
    4. Night vision camera
    5. Adjustable air suspension
    6. Besides offering power
    folding third row seats,
    the second row seats are
    power folding as well
    7. More wood panels found
    on the lower portion of
    the dashboard, upper
    portion of the front doors
    and the upper portion of
    the rear passenger doors
    8. Built-in towing package
    9. Exposed bumper
    integration exhaust tips
Out of those nine features Lexus could've at least included four of those features found on other competitive vehicles based on the price point. They could've at least thrown in the massaging front seats, adjustable air suspension, more interior wood panels and built-in towing package. Maybe during a mid-cycle refresh of this vehicle, Lexus might include those four features. Let's what happens when the time comes. I assume a price range for this high trim level TX might be between $77,000 to $83,000.

Doubtful that it will be that cheap as the speculation is that the 550h+ is going to be listed at $80k USD in the US. The TX350 with the turbo four starts at $72k CAD and models with the third row will be in above $80k CAD. I'm guessing that this is going to be well into the 90s Canadian, perhaps more than $100k. It definitely captures the Lexus design language. But I feel that Lexus is unapologetically adding too many different CUV/SUV model sizes. If they truly want to stand out (including resale values), they should remain laser focused on three models (RX, GX and LX), in terms of build quality, engineering and their high standards. I feel they are spreading themselves far to thin - which costs a ridiculous amount of R&D dollars. And to truly standout… they should offer offer North Americans their absolutely unique (and practical!) Lexus LM500h, otherwise known as a Toyota Alphard. And for those who don’t know what that is… it is a Minivan - a luxurious one…. perhaps the world’s best Minivan (albeit looks can be VERY subjective, but build quality is not). I’m not so sure this Lexus TX will leave much of an imprint on Lexus’s historically great models. But maybe… I’m wrong. The sales figures won’t lie. Thanks for the video.

Not to mention that this TX will not be available in Europe (to the best of my knowledge and our local Lexus dealers' as well), which is a humongous missed opportunity, as where I live there's a TONNE of Mercs GLS or BMWs X7 (which are similar in size, if not slightly larger). Despite a higher pricepoint for the TX (over the RX), it would still be substantially cheaper than its German competition and I am 100% certain they would fill an empty market gap between the cheap 3-row SUVs the likes of Peugeot 5008, Kia Sorento or Skoda Kodiaq and the luxury ones, like the GLS or X7. There's literally nothing in between and Lexus refuses to fill that gap. My wife and I would definitely buy the TX, as we were shopping for a 3-row this year. We were pushed towards the Volvo XC90 and EX90 instead. To us, safety, reliability and comfort are the most important factors when choosing a family hauler, and from a brand perspective only Lexus ticks all 3 boxes.
Also, they introduced the LM into the european market, yet limited its engine choice to 350h only. Incredibly puzzling move, as the LM targets airports and high end hotels as their shuttle of choice. However, most large european cities are introducing bans on internal combustion engines soon, so the LM won't even be allowed into bigger cities, where all those fancy hotels are. Someone please make it make sense...

The development cost of this is jack squat relatively speaking as it's basically a rebadged Grand Highlander (with a few shared parts internally like steering wheel and infotainment from the RX) which is basically just a Highlander stretched a few inches.

If the price predictions are accurate, the 550h+ is gonna be around $80k. A $20k different in price. That's a lot of gas money. I do mostly city driving and when comparing the TX350 to the TX550h+, with me spending $2,500 a year in gas, it would take me 8 years to break even if buying the TX550h+ over the TX350. No thanks. Not really worth it. Only reason I see to get the 550h+ is if you just wanna be more green and wanna pay for it.

    • @omnimoeish
      @omnimoeish 7 месяцев назад

If that's true, it's not going to sell too well. As high as California's gas prices are, the high electricity prices make a PHEV only financially make sense if they're very close to the gas only version. Add on the hassle of plugging in and possibly adding a high voltage charger (probably not really necessary for a PHEV though), and the question mark of having a lithium ion battery to deal with failing at some point... But if they can make the price similar I'm very interested.

Why do you guys (and many others like you) keep on saying that consumers can "save at the pump" with a plug-in hybrid? You do realize that plug-ins command a $4k-$7k premium over a comparable non/plug-in model? It will take years just to break even unless you put in crazy miles annually. You either pay now or pay later. The only value to a plug-in is the convenience of not having to visit the gas station regularly. Let's not even start the debate over buying a plug-in to reduce carbon emission.

And I really love warming the interior from the phone app, in the garage, no exhaust fumes.

Lexus usually does a good job differentiating their cars from their Toyota bretheren. Not this time! You know this will be roughly 30k more than the GH. Really doesn't seem worth it to me. Lexus can do better.

Agreed! This is the laziest upbadging effort from Lexus yet. Only the 550h+ is the notable trim of the TX but yeah, the vehicle as a whole doesn't deserve the significant price premium from the already nice Grand Highlander.

Since its a Lexus, which is actually a Toyota. Even if you can afford a TX "Prime", I only hope you can afford the now legendary waiting list their hybrids and PHEVs have, over the years. TX is definitely the winner that Lexus desperately needs, after the after thought of RX-L. It will make its competitors scared.

You don't know the price because it is going to be ridiculously expensive.

Lately it seems like all your reviews are on electric or some sort of hybrid vehicle! Tell me since these batteries are given a 10 year life span and it is probably more like 7 or 8 years where are this millions upon millions of batteries go to be buried? So I guess in 6 or 7 years everyone will be getting rid of these hybrids and phev’s and so on because the cost of replacing these batteries is outrageous!! Lets face it electric as we know it now is nothing but a stop gap to make most people think they are doing their thing to stop climate change! So how about more reviews on the tired and passe’ combustion engine! Thanks for letting me rant. I do like your reviews and watch everyone of them!🤗

As is, $3700. $79,000 after they fix the front end.

Toyota makes such good cars, why did they pick the universal symbol for "Loser" as their logo for Lexus? 🤔

These alphanumeric car names are getting out of hand. Whatever happened to having vehicle names that are both iconic and cool?
Anybody can tell you what an Escalade or a Civic is. Nobody will go to their their grave remembering that great ABC123xL that they used to drive when they were young. Where do the marketing teams come up with this nonsense?
