That's 1 Arcade1up I wish I didn't sell. That's a keeper, it will be interesting to compare the new legacy to that, I think they took off Lunar Lander. Anyway, thanks for watching bud!
Not to overstate things but you are my hero. I just turned 48 and video games have been my entire life. I still remember playing pong at my cousins and being upset when it was time to leave. You are living the life I wanted to as a kid, and still my inner child still wants to. I own 3 Arcade 1ups and thats about all I will ever be able to do but its something. Just sitting in the room with them, the lights, the sounds of the attract mode is enough to make me smile big. Thank you for your integrity and the love of the GAMES that you put first and foremost. And thanks for letting me live vicariously through you with each video, post and tweet.
This message made my day man. I hear you, sometimes I just put them all on and listen to the attract mode's of the games. I know it's probably weird but it calms me in a weird way. I wish so bad that life could be as simple as it seemed back then. I guess in that moment it is, pretty cool. Gotta keep the Retro Flame burning for future generations. Thanks so much for the awesome comment and I appreciate you going on this crazy journey with me.
Hi, Great video on Tempest, I remember it well when I used to work in an arcade (UK England) between 1979 & 1985 fantastic times in my life and I collect retro games consoles because of this and it’s really nice seeing you collect and restore these arcade games from this time keep it up and keep the history of arcade games going.
wOw nice looking Tempest and Congrats on getting your self one....... I remember when I was a kid we use to have a Tempest, Frogger, Defender and I think it was El Dorado pinball down in the basement of our apartments "laundromat" ....we use to string up the Tempest and Defender cuz it worked lol
Tempest and Tron are two cabs from my childhood I wished I could buy. For 900 repaired, you got a steal. That deal was one made from one fan to another.
Daytona USA is my holy grail game. The experience from the steering wheels to the music blasting you in the chair. Don't forget you can race your friends and strangers
I was lucky when I was younger there was a newsagents in my street that had this game in a corner, I played it for many happy hours and got really good at it - I would love to play it again
Nice Ralph! One of my favorite games was tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar. One of the few games on the Jaguar I liked. To have an original tempest arcade is like having a major piece of arcade history.
Very cool! Dude, Tempest 2000 is awesome of the Jaguar, probably one of my favorite games on that platform, not that there were that many good ones. Do you remember the video I did on the NUON version of tempest? It's a pretty cool modern version as well. Thanks for watching bud!
I’m hoping to get an original Phoenix cab that’s been powered down for decades from the owner of a shop in Dublin, Ireland. Will make for a great resto project, I hope!
I do remember John from John's Arcade mentioning a few times over how his Tempest was very temperamental. Maybe that will just be with his machine. After all, $900 and completely working is truly sweet.
Sheww dawgey! She’s a beaut’, Ralph! Great story to go along with a great acquisition! The artwork on that sucker is balls out!! My holy grail was double dragon and I got it. I want a Golden Axe now.
It's definitely a great game. It's also great to see someone who truly appreciates it for what it is, which is why the seller really wanted to sell to you vs that other low balling dude. Enjoy that new machine to the fullest.
Nice find Ralph! - I do love the look of that cabinet, very unique, beautiful artwork without being too cluttered or obnoxious. I have a Vectrex from back in the 80's with some good vector games on it. I also have some fond memories of Tempest and other vector games from the arcades, like Star Castle, Rip Off, Omega Race, and my favorite Armor Attack!
Dude, you have a Vectrex!?! I would love to have one. I swear that system always amazed me, it felt like it was from the future. I haven't seen one around but I'm sure if I looked I could find one. Does yours still work?
@@RetroRalph yes it works, kinda, last time I tried, I had to wiggle the cart to get it to work. I know there are some people on RUclips that know how to fix them, I just never tried myself. I bought it for $40 back in the 80s at a department store, and then bought most of the cartridges they sold. I loved it, it was my first gaming console. My parents were not wealthy, so I never had an Atari 2600, NES, etc. I only played those at friend;s houses. My second console was a Wii when I was an adult. In between I was a PC Gamer, since 1986 with my Commodore 64, then Amiga, then my first 486DX33 computer. Now I work in IT, have several gaming rigs, and VR gear, etc.
Im not sure how but there are ways to pretty much bulletproof that wells gardner what happens why vector monitors fail is they get hot and overheat and stuff but if you replace the connections and put a fan or something to keep it cool it will last a while
I will have to look into that, I'm sure keeping it on all the time would wear it out a lot faster. Now you have me curious if I could install a more sophisticated cooling system if it might be worth the effort. I want this thing to last... Thanks for the comment bud!
Found my Tempest cabinet, painted over and turned into a mortal kombat 2, found it for 50 bucks last year. Recovered the original artwork under the paint.
Tempest is such a cool cab. All the vector games were cool but that cab just looks so amazing. I'm a 90's arcade kid too but it's hard not to get excited about classic arcade culture.
Of course, when you clear a level, you have to do one last jam on that spinner to move your yellow "character" around and around while it gets sucked through to the bottom. I'm sure that's good for the life of the spinner.
That's how i got my Neo Geo MVS 4 Slot Big Red, not even looking for it, got it for $150 as works but doesn't play right. All it needed was new microswitches in the controllers and buttons and now it plays perfect!
Wow! That machine looks gorgeous! You are very fortunate. You got a great deal. Tempest is definitely one of my “must have” games, but they are very hard to come by and very expensive.
Congrats Ralph! For me I have mine "Savage Quest" and many others. But the only one I have missing I would like to keep private for now until we meet. Just was lucky to pick out the Rarest machines before others could catch on.
@@RetroRalph going to the arcades since I was little. Went to all of them in Tucson back in the day and even went to Japan. I also watched galloping ghost live streams to see what machines they find as well.

Tempest would definitely be top three "holy grails" for me, alongside a sit down Atari Star Wars cab and for some reason a Centipede cabaret. There's just something about all that woodgrain that I love and I also like how the marquee is underneath the control panel. So all three of those Atari legends make up my list! MKII and Defender would round out my top 5.
I'm with you on the Atari Cabarets 100%. So excited that I finally got a Defender cabinet for 200 not working. Been working at the PCB (it's a bear...)
Ahh the infamous Atari cone buttons! Nice one man. Def a keeper. I think if I could get any game it would be a Space Ace, mainly because of childhood memories and sentimental reasons. Also because it put a huge dent in my pocket with how much money I sank into it. Great find man!!!
I think a few of mine would be Galaga, Joust, Dig Dug, Rampage World Tour and the NFL Blitz/Nba showtime combo cab, but wouldn't turn down a Tempest. At least I have my Ms Pacman cocktail which gives me the feels from it being in the local pizza place growing up. Never thought I'd own a real arcade game. I've had a playchoice, Pengo and Killer Instinct a long time ago. Wish I would have kept them.
You need a bigger house... just kidding. Man I would love to have a rampage or rampage world tour, the original rampage is crazy pricey these days. Especially and marquee's :-0
Star Wars was THE one cabinet that I wanted to own, and I was ecstatic when Arcade1Up released their version. Tempest is a close second, and the main reason why I bought the A1Up Asteroids. And I still placed a preorder for the Tempest Legacy cabinet, because of its iconic shape.
I have Tempest on the Asteroids A1up machine with the GRS spinner, works great. There is something to be said though about these vector displays, there is something very special about them especially the first time you see one. These modern LCDs do not capture that vector magic at all.
Assault!! I loved playing that game, and had a chance to buy it for $450 when the arcade was shutting down in the late 90’s and kick myself for not picking it up. If I ever come across one, I’m getting it!!
That’s one hell of a score. I got a $500 budget on my arcade games, so unless I have some sweet trade bait, I’ll probably never get a Tempest. I still have a few 90’s must-haves that I haven’t found yet. NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat 2 and Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition have escaped me so far.
You knowing: Tempest had 4 build in anti pirate checks... One will show you the text: "MCMLXXX Atari" on screen, a other will prevent you from reaching high levels. These are 3 Softwar and one Hardware checks. There is a youtube video available that explains.
Ralph that's really cool! I'll be honest I never cared for these older 80s games, as like you, I'm a 90s guy, but man with the introduction of arcade 1up and reproductions of STAR wars and the Atari Legacy cab coming out soon, I'm looking forward to picking it up and explore the classics I missed playing altogether back then. Love the content! Thanks for sharing.
Looks great Ralph, what a find. Ralph check out Tempest 4000 on the PS4 really cool. "I" like many people would like a full size Tron, my other holy grail was a Robotron 2084, which I have recently purchased and I love that game. Great video Ralph.
Tron has to be right up there as a holy grail game, but I would also include Zaxxon , Qbert, Battlezone with it's iconic viewing portal, and Gravitar as other games I played the hell out of back in the 1980's
Dannng saw that blitz99 peeking out ... you should go grab that too. I’m more 90s than 80s but you can’t beat all the classic side art from the 80s era. Glad you got it!
I already had a Tempest. It worked good but cabinet was kind of rough. Wouldn't ya know a minty Tempest popped up locally for $500 and I was all over it! Listed my old Tempest the next day and it was gone in minutes. Love the game.
The one game for me would the Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator w/ the cockpit/captains chair. Always loved the game stand up, but the cockpit/captian's chair version and sitting down and playing was always awesome for me.
Congratulations @Retro Ralph! Enjoy man. I’ve never gotten into Tempest even though I was around when it originally released. I never saw it at many places aroubd where I’m from. There was plenty of Pac Man and Pole Position though. I even saw Moon Patrol more than Tempest 😂.
I own a Vectrex with a pretty substantial library, so I really get the allure of Tempest. Definitely a deal at under $900, and yeah, it would be hard to say no! My "must-have" arcade machine though would be a pinball table... "Skateball" (Bally, 1980).
I love Tempest. It's up there in my must-haves, but I have a few Holy Grail games. Juno First, Ice Cold Beer, and Quantum are the first ones that come to mind.
Looks amazing! I can't remember the last time I saw Tempest. It looks bigger than I remember. There was one at my neighborhood store around 1982. It was my favorite of the arcades that cycled through there. Choplifter, Popeye, and Mario Bros are the others I remember. I think they got rid of the games after the crash in 84.
One of my favorite arcade games is Ninja Baseball Bat Man. I saw a skin for an Alpha-Cade on one site amongst their Arcade1Up stuff. Was curious if they would make it for an actual Arcade 1Up but they never got back to me.
Dude, just saw a really good Rastan the other day. I forgot how awesome the soundtrack is on that game, I have no idea what one would go for though. Thanks for watching bud. That History segment is just a re-skinned asset from Arcade Pickers. I figured it could be cool to weave the history segments into pick up videos. Thanks again for watching bud!
I preordered the Atari Legacy 1up cab just because of the looks (Tempest). Though for me the Holy Grail arcade game for me to have would be Tron!! Sure wish Arcade 1up would make that one.
Congratulations ralph, it's a beautiful machine. Have fun with it. Its super hard though. I've gotten to the light blue levels (about 450k). But most people don't even get to the red levels (the ones after the blue). Play around with the settings, there's a lot of cool ones, level select, demo mode, etc. i have the mini replicade one which is ok to look at, but can't really play it. will probably get the arcade 1up atari legacy cabinet at some point too. Have fun. later -1
Definitely worth $900. I'm happy that you're trying to keep the original arcade cabinets together . That was wacky when your boy bought the box frame for $50 by destroying a part of history.
Ok if you didn't see my message go on KLOV look up a multi vector kit that bolts right in its Act vector not fpga cost about 600 for the kit . Those pcbs are crazy hard to keep running right . If the psu goes out it will eat the pcb no doubt trust me
I’ve got the Arcade1up version on pre-order. Speaking of Arcade1up, any chance you’ll be doing the Star Wars Pinball mod tutorial followup in the near future? I ordered all the parts you listed, but as a modding noob I could use a more detailed tutorial on the install. Thanks!
Sweet pickup! I think I've only ever played it on one of those Atari Flashback consoles. I don't know if it was because of the emulation or because it was the 2600 version of the game, but it didn't play so well with that joystick. That being said the arcade version is on the AtGames Legends Ultimate, so I really have no excuse not to check it out.
This totally deserves a Quarter Arcades release!

I preordered the Atari Legacy 1up cab just because of the looks (Tempest). Though for me the Holy Grail arcade game for me to have would be Tron!! Sure wish Arcade 1up would make that one.
Congratulations ralph,
it's a beautiful machine. Have fun with it. Its super hard though.
I've gotten to the light blue levels (about 450k). But most people
don't even get to the red levels (the ones after the blue).
Play around with the settings, there's a lot of cool ones, level select, demo mode, etc.
i have the mini replicade one which is ok to look at, but can't really play it.
will probably get the arcade 1up atari legacy cabinet at some point too.
Have fun.

Favorite game! Man that one looks nice.
Love it, Tempest is like number 3 for me and I don't know what's really number 1 and 2. Lol
What a great score man! Congratulations.
Thanks! I appreciate you watching, I'm super excited about this one!
Beautiful machine 👍💪👊
Love Tempest! My holy grail game is Galaga and I have one. But I would love to have a Tempest as well.
Galaga is in my top 5, it stands the test of time, great pick!
Hey Retro Ralph the one cabinet I would like to get my hands on is the Dragons Lair it's the 12"inch cabinet.
Gotta love Dragon's lair man, I'm with you on that!
Oh btw I have about 3 tempest spinners. The brass rebuild kit is brass I have 1 too
congrats! the artwork alone is worth it.
Definitely worth $900. I'm happy that you're trying to keep the original arcade cabinets together . That was wacky when your boy bought the box frame for $50 by destroying a part of history.
I probably spent $900 in quarters for this game back in the day.....nice pickup Ralph!😎
Nice find! How's the Killer Instinct project coming along?
Great score! My game would be Satans Hollow
That’s how dad did it, that’s how America does it, and it’s work out pretty well so far.
Ok if you didn't see my message go on KLOV look up a multi vector kit that bolts right in its Act vector not fpga cost about 600 for the kit . Those pcbs are crazy hard to keep running right . If the psu goes out it will eat the pcb no doubt trust me
Nice grab Ralph, good price also, definitely a good one to have in the collection👍
Love the look of this cabinet but my dream cabinet would probably be WrestleFest.
Awesome cab!
I would like a Ridge Racer Full Scale or a Neo Geo MVS Cabaret.
Dude, you own a vector!
Awesome pick.
Awesome video!! My game is Ataris WAR:FINAL ASSAULT
