That is an offence under data protection rules in Europe regardless of the profession you work in. The daughters were punished because they committed unethical behaviour in their chosen profession. Accountants can be barred for going bankrupt, behaviour not regardless as serious in other professions. It is a trust issue since if an error was made people will query if it was an error or deliberate

I was going to mention that too. It doesn't matter if someone is family or family-to-be, nurses and doctors should NEVER give out a patient's information. That's a HIPPA violation and a quick way to lose a nursing/doctor license.

Francine (in the US ) would have violated HIPPA and that’s huge violation. Getting her License revoked is the proper consequence. As for the “prank” the sisters put his wife’s life at risk. Not only did they tamper with her medication, her pregnancy and life were at risk if she had a high risk pregnancy or other underlying medical conditions that could have reacted badly to the drug they substituted. I’m so happy w/ the ending. Francine got fired, mom lost her engagement, and OP sued his audaciously entitled twin sisters & got them kicked out of there nursing program. Those twins had some nerve going to school for a medical degree and poisoned a pregnant woman they hated for no good reason. All four of them got what they deserved.💯

What the sisters did was NOT a "prank", it was a crime, pure&simple! Changing meds can have disastrous, even life-ending, consequences. These two need to be reported to police. Either one of the family members or an absolute idiot. I would not mess with the vitamins of a pregnant woman, and I don't even have medical training. I figured the sisters were just too stupid to know better, but when I learned they were nursing students I hit the roof. And I don't believe they mixed up what medications they were replacing. There is no way on Earth they mistook a bottle of prenatal vitamins and a bottle of pain killers.

Fr. Even my sister who was working as a nurse, knew that she was NOT allowed to even open my medical files without my WRITTEN permission in file. Just because we're family doesn't mean she can go through my med.files.
And they don't always take action. I worked as a therapist at a long-term facility. One day I noticed the nurse wearing sun glasses. I was dumb enough to believe her, when she said she was having eye problems. Turns out she was giving the patients (who were living in constant pain and were on mechanical ventilation for life) Tylenol, while stealing their Oxycontin. Several cognizant residents had complained that the new brand of pain killer wasn't working, and they wanted the old brand back! She was placed on leave and got to enroll in an out-patient drug program.
My granddaughter was murdered by her daycare worker who was also my daughter's friend and housemate. At the time, the killer was taking classes for a degree in early childcare. The killer went to prison but I am unsure if she was able to complete her degree or if she's even working around children. I would hope her felony background keeps her away from children.
HIPAA violations are a major big deal. The hospital can be sued for a lot of money, and anyone involved could definitely get canned. It doesn't matter if they're part of the family.

I honestly don't understand the commenter mentioned after update 5. Everyone should know that confidentiality is sacred in the medical field, and Francine violated that. It does not matter if it was "only" the confidentiality of a family member that was violated, for the sake of another family member, she commited a HIPAA violation, which is a crime, and she had to do so knowingly. Loosing her certification was the logical consequence of that. And regarding the sisters:. they were studying NURSING!! As healthcare professionals, HIPPA laws are mandatory education at all faculties for employees! Francine broke the law and deserved the repercussions! I agree that Francine should have lost her license and that the sisters should have been tossed from the nursing program. No one could, in all conscience, hire people who acted in such a way.
The state nursing license board should have been advvised of the sisters' actions, so they could be banned from EVER being a nurse. To intnentionally replace meds with something not intended for a woman, because of their pettiness about a name, si great indications of what type of nurses they would become. They should never, ever, be allowed to work in the healthcare industry. Also, a nice huge lawsuit against the hospital where Francine was employed would go a long ways inmaking them create better security for medical information. Francine knew she was violating the law, but did it anyway. She should also be subjected to further legal, and civil action. She deserved much worse punishment that she received. And where did they get it? As far as I know, you can't get Sildenofil (or similar drugs) OTC. People do buy stuff online, but they have tested that stuff and it turns out to be compressed chalk and road paint in at least one study.
In Texas, the hospital staff should have immediately called CPS and/or police to report this matter. Endangering a child is a crime & hospital staff are mandated reporters which mean that they are required to report any potential crime against a child.
The person who made the major comment condemning the actions taken by the man who posted this needs their views adjusted. Switching prescribed medications that someone is taking is never a prank, but dangerous and a crime. And considering that both sisters were apparently studying to become nurses themselves, they knew this but did it anyway. I'm glad that the Dean got wind of their actions and had them removed from the course, as their lack of ethical behaviour does not bode well for their future as nurses. Plus, Francine was also going completely against hospital policy, not to mention her invasion of privacy and deserved the result. For anyone who believes the nurse and nursing students are wronged, they all violated federal laws. The fiancée violated patient privacy laws by accessing the woman’s medical records. The hospital could have been sued. And, in addition to any oaths, 23:24 laws. They also violated the Hippocratic Oath, especially the following clauses: “I will follow that system of regimen which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous…and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption…”
People should research their erectile dysfunction medications and how they work before they keep saying this was a prank. They’re so dangerous. They mess with the internal blood pressures of your body, and to imagine dealing with that while you’re pregnant. And the reason the girls got kicked out of nursing school is because in my opinion, they messed with somebody’s medication. I have worked in the ER for many years and they have consistently, over and over, pounded into us the importance of HIPPA and the consequences of going into a patient record other than as needed for a patient we are personally working on. At the start of Covid half my department was fired due to several people going into charts they had no business being in. This made the pandemic even more of a nightmare for those of us remaining. Our job requires a lot of additional training, it's not a job you can just jump into. I love my job but it can get very complicated very quickly. A patient's privacy is not something you can violate just because your spouse/kid/friend wants to know some info.
It isn't just medical information that is covered by HIPPA. Even Department of Human Services (aka the welfare dept) threatens you within an inch of your life regarding violations.

The reason for all 3 of those women being let go is because of HIPPA. The Hippocratic oath is recited after passing boards but is also discussed in nursing class introduction. In the oath you are to do no harm to patients nor discuss their private medical information. Ex fiance accessed private information and then discussed it without that person's permission with another person against the law as well. The sisters should have known that the meds they switched could have caused her harm. Also just because they say it was a prank doesn't mean jack diddly squat their "prank" caused unwarranted harm to a woman and her unborn child hence their discharge from the nursing program. There's a fun law that medical practitioners are required to follow. It's called HIPAA. Francine was not allowed to share Harley's medical information unless she and her husband gave SPECIFIC PERMISSION for his mother to receive it. She didn't lose her job because OP was petty and the only crime she committed WASN'T just loving his mother. She shared privileged medical information without permission. She's lucky she wasn't sued.

From a nurses point of view. All nurses know that you can not look at someone's chart if you have no medical necessity to so. You know that if you do, you will loose your job when caught. Any person that is willing to swap out medications, especially with intent to harm, should never be allowed to be a nurse. That's messed up and you'd be surprised how easy it is to switch the prenatal vitamins with another medication. I'm currently pregnant and have prenatal vitamins One day I went to take one and my husband happened to see me grab the bottle, he quickly stopped me before I could put a pill in my mouth, he read the label and took the pill away. It was vitamins specifically for men but I wouldn't have known if he didn't catch me because aside from the slight difference in the bottle size and the label (which I honestly SHOULD have read before) the pills look EXACTLY the same. Like I said they were just vitamins but there was still no telling how my body would have reacted to it. We've kept our vitamins in opposite sides of our room in designated areas since (I also carry some in a tin container for when I go to work as I like to take it at a certain time)

If she was close to the Harley's mother and engaged, yet didn't feel comfortable enough to VISIT the girl in her room like a family member and ASK her how she was, then, there must be something about her that Harley didn't like. Both of my nephews are named after someone. My older nephew is a IV generation Hugh, with the exact same name as daddy, papa and great-grandfather. His younger brother has the middle nsme Charles after my sister in laws older brother who tragically drowned about 15 years ago. I'm not jealous, I'm proud they get to carry on a legacy.

In regard to the last comment, I’m a retired nurse every where I’ve worked we would be fired if we were caught looking up our own medical records let alone anyone else’s. The sisters should have been expelled. I wouldn’t want anyone in the profession that would tamper with someone’s medication.

Who ever accused OP of destroying their lives is probably the sisters or mother reading this account. Protect your wife and children OP. You did good. I figured the sisters were just too stupid to know better, but when I learned they were nursing students I hit the roof. And I don't believe they mixed up what medications they were replacing. There is no way on Earth they mistook a bottle of prenatal vitamins and a bottle of pain killers.

I HATE how people like that are able to become nurses or work in the medical field period.
And they don't always take action. I worked as a therapist at a long-term facility. One day I noticed the nurse wearing sun glasses. I was dumb enough to believe her, when she said she was having eye problems. Turns out she was giving the patients (who were living in constant pain and were on mechanical ventilation for life) Tylenol, while stealing their Oxycontin. Several cognizant residents had complained that the new brand of pain killer wasn't working, and they wanted the old brand back! She was placed on leave and got to enroll in an out-patient drug program.
My granddaughter was murdered by her daycare worker who was also my daughter's friend and housemate. At the time, the killer was taking classes for a degree in early childcare. The killer went to prison but I am unsure if she was able to complete her degree or if she's even working around children. I would hope her felony background keeps her away from children.

HIPAA violations are a major big deal. The hospital can be sued for a lot of money, and anyone involved could definitely get canned.

I honestly don't understand the commenter mentioned after update 5. Everyone should know that confidentiality is sacred in the medical field, and Francine violated that. It does not matter if it was "only" the confidentiality of a family member that was violated, for the sake of another family member, she commited a HIPAA violation, which is a crime, and she had to do so knowingly. Loosing her certification was the logical consequence of that. And regarding the sisters:. they were studying NURSING!! I'm sorry, but I'd hate to be in a hospital and be taken care of by people who thought swapping someone's medication for some radom other pills as retaliation for some imaginary slight was OK. As healthcare professionals, HIPPA laws are mandatory education at all faculties for employees! Francine broke the law and deserved the repercussions! As future nurses, the twins emotional instability was truly scary. I fervently 0:00 hope they're not allowed into another nursing program. I agree that Francine should have lost her license and that the sisters should have been tossed from the nursing program. No one could, in all conscience, hire people who acted in such a way.
The state nursing license board should have been advvised of the sisters' actions, so they could be banned from EVER being a nurse. To intnentionally replace meds with something not intended for a woman, because of their pettiness about a name, si great indications of what type of nurses they would become. They should never, ever, be allowed to work in the healthcare industry. Also, a nice huge lawsuit against the hospital where Francine was employed would go a long ways inmaking them create better security for medical information. Francine knew she was violating the law, but did it anyway. She should also be subjected to further legal, and civil action. She deserved much worse punishment that she received. And where did they get it? As far as I know, you can't get Sildenofil (or similar drugs) OTC. People do buy stuff online, but they have tested that stuff and it turns out to be compressed chalk and road paint in at least one study.

In Texas, the hospital staff should have immediately called CPS and/or police to report this matter. Endangering a child is a crime & hospital staff are mandated reporters which mean that they are required to report any potential crime against a child.
CPS doesn't get involved in unborn babies.
The person who made the major comment condemning the actions taken by the man who posted this needs their views adjusted. Switching prescribed medications that someone is taking is never a prank, but dangerous and a crime. And considering that both sisters were apparently studying to become nurses themselves, they knew this but did it anyway. I'm glad that the Dean got wind of their actions and had them removed from the course, as their lack of ethical behaviour does not bode well for their future as nurses. Plus, Francine was also going completely against hospital policy, not to mention her invasion of privacy and deserved the result. For anyone who believes the nurse and nursing students are wronged, they all violated federal laws. The fiancée violated patient privacy laws by accessing the woman’s medical records. The hospital could have been sued. And, in addition to any oaths, 23:24 laws.

I have worked in the ER for many years and they have consistently, over and over, pounded into us the importance of HIPPA and the consequences of going into a patient record other than as needed for a patient we are personally working on. At the start of Covid half my department was fired due to several people going into charts they had no business being in. This made the pandemic even more of a nightmare for those of us remaining. Our job requires a lot of additional training, it's not a job you can just jump into. I love my job but it can get very complicated very quickly. A patient's privacy is not something you can violate just because your spouse/kid/friend wants to know some info.
It isn't just medical information that is covered by HIPPA. Even Department of Human Services (aka the welfare dept) threatens you within an inch of your life regarding violations.

The reason for all 3 of those women being let go is because of HIPPA. The Hippocratic oath is recited after passing boards but is also discussed in nursing class introduction. In the oath you are to do no harm to patients nor discuss their private medical information. Ex fiance accessed private information and then discussed it without that person's permission with another person against the law as well. The sisters should have known that the meds they switched could have caused her harm. Also just because they say it was a prank doesn't mean jack diddly squat their "prank" caused unwarranted harm to a woman and her unborn child hence their discharge from the nursing program. There's a fun law that medical practitioners are required to follow. It's called HIPAA. Francine was not allowed to share Harley's medical information unless she and her husband gave SPECIFIC PERMISSION for his mother to receive it. She didn't lose her job because OP was petty and the only crime she committed WASN'T just loving his mother. She shared privileged medical information without permission. She's lucky she wasn't sued.

From a nurses point of view. All nurses know that you can not look at someone's chart if you have no medical necessity to so. You know that if you do, you will loose your job when caught. Any person that is willing to swap out medications, especially with intent to harm, should never be allowed to be a nurse. Furthermore, the sisters should have been sent to jail for attempting to harm/murder 2 people. As a nurse, I have no compassion for these horrible human beings.

That's messed up and you'd be surprised how easy it is to switch the prenatal vitamins with another medication. I'm currently pregnant and have prenatal vitamins One day I went to take one and my husband happened to see me grab the bottle, he quickly stopped me before I could put a pill in my mouth, he read the label and took the pill away. It was vitamins specifically for men but I wouldn't have known if he didn't catch me because aside from the slight difference in the bottle size and the label (which I honestly SHOULD have read before) the pills look EXACTLY the same. Like I said they were just vitamins but there was still no telling how my body would have reacted to it. We've kept our vitamins in opposite sides of our room in designated areas since (I also carry some in a tin container for when I go to work as I like to take it at a certain time)

Here is what I don't understand. Why would Francine sneak and violate HIPPA to get the info. If she was close to the Harley's mother and engaged, yet didn't feel comfortable enough to VISIT the girl in her room like a family member and ASK her how she was, then, there must be something about her that Harley didn't like. After all, we are talking about someone who has a long-term relationship with Harley's mother. So why couldn't Francine just visit like a family member/ layperson and just ask her about her condition and ask if she minded Francine sharing with Harley's own mother? Both of my nephews are named after someone. My older nephew is a IV generation Hugh, with the exact same name as daddy, papa and great-grandfather.

As a nurse I am appalled at the behaviour of the nurse and nursing students in this story. The sisters are lucky they aren't in jail. In the state where I live they would never get into another nursing school again. Even if they did, they could never get a nursing license. HIPPA is real and I fear violating it. Mom's partner was stupid.
