I used to be the go to baby sitter being the eldest kid. Then one holiday I just snapped and started screaming and cursing and just left going into the woods. People were freaking out cause I had just vanished into the woods and no one could find me
That sounds really unfair and exhausting. You deserve to enjoy the holidays too, not just be treated like free childcare. I hope you can set some boundaries and prioritize your own happiness during future celebrations. You deserve it
You know... why didn't everyone just a shift? I think the biggest mistake here is that they assumed, they mandated, they didn't ask and they didn't share the responsibility.
I am so proud of OP for standing her ground. She may be their sister, but that doesn't not mean that they should expect her to babysit without paying. And then to make her look after everyone's children and miss out on the holiday??? No bloody way. They aren't treating her like a sister, they have been treating her like a maid. I have a 1 year old and a 2 year old. Since they were born I have not even spent 1 day away from them. In total, I've been away from them for maybe 20 hours most. As a parent it is your responsibility to look after your children. Of someone offers to look after them for a while then thats great, but no one should expect family to just drop everything to look after their children, especially if they don't want to.
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. It sounds really frustrating and unfair to be left out of the celebrations while taking on such a big responsibility. I hope you can find a way to communicate your feelings with your family and set some boundaries so you can also enjoy the holiday season. Everyone deserves to feel included and valued, especially during special times like Christmas.
While you were eating that dinner, you shouldn't made a note, so that everybody can hear, that you're "so happy to eat an actual christmas meal in so many years".
Man when I was little they just put every kid in a different room with whoever wanted to look after us. They took shifts shifts. For Halloween party there was a kid Halloween and then an adult Halloween for the parents
I used to babysit nieces (6yr, 7yr), nephews (8yr, 8yr), and the neighbor kid (8yr) all day at 13 for free pizzas and drinks. For tuition I would have even took care of babies
Story states the family lived in Minnesota, and OP went to college at "Berkeley". Then talks about the drive to college being 6 hours. Driving from Minnesota to California is more than 6 hours. Am I missing something?
I have said this on another post but I promise it works. If you are forced to babysit your siblings children. Literally grab those children by the hair when they misbehave. Then walk them past your family while correcting them. When siblings lose their minds. Just say this works and your children need discipline as you have been to soft on them. They won’t ask you to babysit again
I would have shown up with a ironclad contract saying I get $25 an hour babysitting per child
No one wants to work on holiday season especially if they travel so far back home.
Pay under minimum wage?
Spend time with your kids. Don’t have them if you can’t take care of them

Who the hell told them I was a free baby sitter the audacity of these ppl so happy u stood up to them

Because it was more convenient to bully the youngest.
Family is Family BS. Honestly
If you ever want a drinking game, everytime one of these says Family you take a drink.
This is AITA for not babysitting at Thanksgiving, rewritten, and containing more children.
Yes, eight children? Totally exaggerated

Good for you for standing up for yourself, you deserve better ❤
Oh hell no. I would have flat out said no I didn't even get dinner. I would never go back.
Good for you for standing up for yourself 💪
As a father myself, I would never dump my kids on someone to babysit while I chill. It's just wrong
...
What that family did to OP, IM surprised she didnt grow to resent or worst childern in general
I can't believe that they didn't call for the kids to eat. That sounds like no holiday dinner.
While you were eating that dinner, you shouldn't made a note, so that everybody can hear, that you're "so happy to eat an actual christmas meal in so many years".
if Ruby was a villain she would raise Tyler and Sophie to be her henchmen
I loved this story: family is not family.
Man when I was little they just put every kid in a different room with whoever wanted to look after us. They took shifts shifts. For Halloween party there was a kid Halloween and then an adult Halloween for the parents
Op family is so selfish, except the grandparents
Am I having a stroke? Did one of these stories actually end with some self awareness and personal growth?
I know right??..
She wanted to spend time with her family instead of just babysitting, then he shuts yourself in a room?

i would go no contact as soon as I could legally leave the house and make sure that i change my phone and the family fìnd another babysitter

The snow in January. In Berkely, CA.
Short cuts.
Maybe OP, was trying to conceal there identity by not useing real locations and names.
snow in Berkeley? That's not a thing
This is what happens when you don’t include the kids in the “family”. I’m so glad our family isn’t like that
It's sad when you have to sell the kids for medical experiments. But a gal's gotta do what a gal's gotta do.
Omg someone tell the OP it does not snow in Berkeley! 😂
Good girl for blocking them. What a smart smart person you are.

I'm not sure I like the ending or not.
