One of the best days of my life !. I was bar-manager of a pub in Morrison Street so we were always packed when the rugby was on - the night before both of our bars were packed with English fans who were wearing T-shirts with 'England Grand Slam 1990' and they also had balloons with the same message !. On the morning of the game preparations went so well we had 45 minutes to kill before opening time and one of the girls had found a whole box of these balloons so I got all the staff to blow as many up as possible and with felt-tip pens added to the message 'F***** BY SCOTLAND 1990 !' and plastered the bar with them !. To this day I don't know how many england fans noticed the 'amended' balloons BEFORE the gamers but, by christ, we made sure they did AFTER that game !
I remember that day well, because I was there. The English had been so gung-ho the whole week before the game saying how they only had to turn up to win, but David Sole's decision for the team to march slowly onto the pitch instead of at the usual sprint was a masterstroke! Nobody expected it, least of all the English and the roar from the crowd was more deafening than usual! England were never going to win after that and that spine-tingling rendition on Flower Of Scotland from the Murrayfield crowd. If I'm not mistaken, that was the first time the Corries' folksong was adopted as Scotland's official anthem at Murrayfield!
Not quite true - England never said that or acted like that in the build up to the game. Any “favourites” tag was only ever given to them by the media - but don’t let that get in the way of your “arrogant English” narrative….
Brilliant stuff! Just finished reading The Grudge, and this compilation makes a great companion to that. What doesn't come through in that book - but does in this video - is how good Gary Armstrong was at tidying up messy ball. What an operator!
Definitely. Standing joke in Jedburgh as we thought there was a cupboard at Riverside where they released Number 9’s every few years ( Roy Laidlaw, Gary Armstrong , Greig Laidlaw).😅😅😅
Yes, even the kit. cotton shorts and shirts then, no polyester tight fitting stinky shirts with mega amounts of stupid advertising. Even the shorts are polyester today, no pockets either. Of all the sports in the world, rugby had the best looing kit of any other.
Now that’s how to ruck a ball. Pity it can’t happen today, the game would be so much better for it. Always brings a smile when I hear Mr McLaren on commentary, great memories.
7:41 Damian Cronin gives me a big hug. I’m the blue trench coat and green scarf. Still habe that scarf. That picture was all over every Sunday paper in the Uk. Quality!!
The organisation is a mess and the men are less physical but the handling is absolutely amazing. We could learn so much from this era. Sadly it was just before the kicking period where lots of games were 6-3 etc and we’ve been trying to get back to this open play ever since. Love this sport!!
When Stanger scores, Bill Mclaren cries, "Stanger could be there first, it's a try." For years I thought it was, "Stanger could be there, f**k it's a try.."
Watching Scotland play without hearing bill McLaren's voice just seems so wrong now. I had just started playing rugby at this point, and after playing for over 30 years, its sometimes hard to remember that a try was once worth 3 points and a conversion 1 lmao. Also: How good was Armstrongs kicking? even great Kickers like Finn Russell and Hoggy cant match that
England thought all they had to do was turn up, however David sole had other ideas. They can be just as obnoxious as their footballing counterparts, except with a different shaped ball.
I remember this match very well. I was sitting in my clubhouse at Luton Rugby club with a beer in my hand.I was gutted. According to this video though, England didn't score!
@@stanleybuchan4610 yeah, there having problems. I’m sure they’ll improve come RWC. Sacking Eddie Jones was a mistake. Aussies happy to have him back. France and Ireland are playing so well atm. It’s good for rugby that it’s not just the Boks or the Blacks on top heading into a RWC.
Brian Moore wrote that as soon as he saw Jeffrey on the wrong side and getting away with it that he knew that Eng were stuffed. And Stanger bounced the ball over the line.
Scotland won the championship in 99 so already your comment is wrong. Again this was a personal project for a dinner with members of the 1990 team. If you don’t like it don’t watch. Sick of certain fans coming here to point score.
@@iananderson3799far too simplistic analysis of that period. There were multiple occasions when England picked Scotland apart with good running rugby during that period.
Yeah, a great England team them days. All the Great Scottish Players retired. They were involved in a Lions series win, Rugby World cup semi final and won the Grand Slam.
Have Scotland ever won a six nations or a world cup or is this their highlight at least England lernt from this and moved on to bigger things, grand slams, 4 world cup finals just saying 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏴🏴🏴
This video was made as I work with a rugby club in Scotland where we had members of the 1990 grand slam team at an evening dinner talking about the campaign with guests. This was made simply as an introduction for the evening, and I uploaded it here as this is my channel to store projects that I delete from my PC Instead of enjoying my project, you comment in a pointless point-scoring exercise. And before you respond with the usual 'haha Scotland bad', I am half English and would have happily made a video if the dinner was for say the 2003 world cup win. You can talk about anything but don't make it a 'Scotland v England' debate. Hope you enjoyed :)
@Dennis M I guess what he is attempting to say once you sift through all the bragging and bull💩is that Scotland is rubbish and not as good as England. Just like how England is rubbish when lined up against New Zealand, South Africa, France and Ireland. More players and money than everyone else but still living off 2003.
And England have greater player resources and money as compared to any other rugby playing nation, and yet they have only won one World Cup, as compared to SA 3 (could be 4 2023, if France does not take it out) Aust 3 ( in with a shot 2023) NZ 3 (not much show in 2023) go Scotland the land of my high endeavour, Land of the Shining river and land of my heart for ever
Legendary commentary of Bill MacLaren. Always loved his rugby commentary 🇿🇦
Hearing Bill McLarens commentary is so nostalgic, what a top bloke, love from Cape Town. 🏴🇿🇦
I miss the dulcet tones of Bill McLaren. He is the voice of my youth watching All Black tours to the UK

The English never said that. Stop lying. But they had been on fire until this game and were expected to win.
Surprised at that English over confidence

When rugby was worth watching and supporting.

That's the best attack I've ever seen from Scotland with plenty of skills and support play 👍

The white shark, John Jeffrey.
Un sacré client.
33 years ago. Bloody hell.

Great kicking with no tees though
Scotland - reigning Five Nations Champions

Bloody awesome.
Strange being a kiwi love the Scottish anthem when the Scottish people sing as one. Just saying.

Troisième ligne légendaire.
Beating the engerlusheroonies no big deal these days….
Just greatness, now mediocre 2023. Me. Aroha for the great game.
Will never forget that day worst hangover ever what a game
Finley Calder 13. England 7.
Crazy that the TMO wasn't called on some of them tries
Brian Moore maintains that Stainger was ahead of the kicker. England made amends in 1992, 1993. and 1995.
England thought all they had to do was turn up, however David sole had other ideas. They can be just as obnoxious as their footballing counterparts, except with a different shaped ball.
3.30 May I assume that this `fly through` was recorded more recently than 1990 ?
Thanks I was wondering how they did that
Shonky bit of editing in the Wales match.
was yhis the lowest number of tries to win a gs?
Great day....but Stainger lost control... everyone knows it.
A l'époque l'Irlande n'était pas celle d'aujourd'hui
Knock on before first try
Scotland all tartan

when scotland were half decent
Aye.
When the laws were clearer and people kept on their feet in a ruck
Their still pretty good. Other nations have just got a lot better.

Ha ha, let me know when it happens again. I could do with a good laugh.😂😂
England always play a negative game, just pure strength,no skill,as in every sport.
Waz that Sean Lineen from New Zealand?

Yes. That was the Carling days of eight man rugby.

@@ghowe79 Fair comment, sir.
Nowadays, with England's resources and money, they should hang their heads in shame with such poor performances. When did they last beat Scotland?
Yeah, a great England team them days. All the Great Scottish Players retired. They were involved in a Lions series win, Rugby World cup semi final and won the Grand Slam.
Oh ... when stanger touched the ball down on his own leg......no try...!
Still bitter 33 years later?

this is rugby in my playing days unfortunately the modern game today has ruined the game
That first try is how to pass and move the ball. No going to ground to set up a phony ruck like in today's game.
It's unfortunate that in the Grand Slam decider, the referee from New Zealand, did not play advantage. The game would have been so much better.
