@@AndysCornishCreations not lots of rain. But, we get more than enough wind to make up for it! Theyre puttin up wind turbines everywhere, so, at least theyre getting some purpose out of it!
@@AndysCornishCreations big controversy around here about the turbines. I dont own land that theyre on, so, i guess i shouldnt have an opinion. But, they are providing some electricity. And i think they look cool. Theres no trees around here anyway, so they kind of add some scenery! (Kansas is flat and boring!)

Super Job Andy, love the finish. I would like to make a larger serving platter this way. So for your finishing then, you sanded all the way to 400 grit, applied sanding sealer, cleaned off with denatured alcohol, and you went for a wax finish, but since the wood absorbed it, went with an acrylic lacquer finish? Just wanting to see if I have the sequence correct (am going to doing a glue up for my platter tonight. :)) Thanks and take care. Loved the introductory footage of the coastline!!!!
Hi Jay... Thank you very much... Get the glue up nice and tight... After turning... sand from 80 grit to 240.. Check to see if you have any areas that haven't sanded very well... usually on the end grain... If it's not great apply sanding sealer now to harden the fibres... 2 coats .. let dry .. then sand again with 240 until its smooth then up to 400 .. apply sealer again .. lightly sand to de- nib the sealer... Or if its sanded well then go straight to 400 ..apply sanding sealer.. de- nib with 400 grit or scotch bright pad.. Clean with denatured alcohol... Apply acrylic laquer spray... lightly... more coats are better than applying thick and it running... Lightly sand then apply the last coat... Apply abrasive paste to smooth and polish... Then a wax finish... any is ok.. Definitely from now on I will be using acrylic laquer on this type of project... I hope that you have great success with your platter... I'm glad that you enjoyed the coastline footage... Take care...All the best.....Andy
Lovely Job as always Andy 😁. The last couple of rubbish bits of wood I have turned have had a strange reaction to the wax I used ?? I like the lacquer Finnish so will try that next time. Thanks for the video 😁👍
Hi Frank... thank you... I couldn't get a good finish with my usual wax ... the end grain was too absorbent even with sanding sealer... the laquer worked well but it took a long time for the smell to go ... take care...All the best.....Andy

Really like that thanks for posting Andy. Your homemade tools are interesting what tips are you using and what steel have you mounted them onto? Perhaps you hold do an instructional.
Hi Paul... the tips are from Ebay... type in...3pcs tungsten carbide cutters inserts set ... £5.95 from China... the rod is also Ebay... type in...12.5mm metric silver steel ground round stock ... it comes up as £6.94 per unit... I got the 12.5mm Rod 333mm long ... from.. J.D. engineering supplies... I still have the square cutter to make so I may film that.. but have to find the time...hope this helps... take care...All the best.....Andy
@@AndysCornishCreations Andy thanks for that I am quite new to this woodturning thing. I am a toolmaker by trade so am quite familiar with silver steel. I think I am going to just buy some tips and see what happens.
Hey Andy! Where can I get a pallet like this? Having worked in international trade and logistics all my life, I think that I will never look at a pallet the same way again, no matter how rotten it may be 🤪 This bowl is simply gorgeous with the different colours and grains of wood, and the shape is really lovely too! You could keep fruit or wool or all sorts of bits and pieces in it. Of course, it is not oak or yew, but hey would you believe this is made of scrap wood? Fantastic! Just like the weather 😂 I remember I once took my sister on a holiday to Cornwall. We crossed Bodmin Moor on a day like this, it was absolute gloom and doom 😂 My sister nearly went into depression... “Why you like it so much here is a riddle to me!” Next day bright sunshine and blue skies, and my sister “oh, this is absolute paradise!” It sure is! Oh yes, the 👍🏻, nearly forgot 😬 Byeeee!
Hi Jude... there was also some scraps left over from other projects but its surprising how nice pallet wood can look... I was thinking about doing another soon with the pieces cut so as to be less wasteful with the timber.... when doing a bowl there is always a lot more wood on the floor than in the finished bowl... the edge of the Moor is only about 2 miles from our house and it can get a bit bleak up there... but as you say when the sun shines it is beautiful... thank you for the 👍... take care...All the best.....Andy
Hi Andy I'm new to wood turning and was wondering what's the best wood to use to learn to make a bowl with. Love this bowl the different colours look beautiful. Will be watching more of your videos and I have just subscribed.
Hi Craig... thank you for your comment and your subscription... welcome to a great hobby... my advice would be... Don't go out and buy expensive bowl blanks until you have a bit more experience... Start small.. you can make a bowl from a block of wood that's only 4 x 4 x 2 inches... but 6 x 6 x 3 inches is ideal... If you have a joinery shop near you .. ask them for offcuts of Oak, sapele, Iroko, Ash, ... basically anything that they have would be good... Don't be put off by using construction lumber...pine etc .. it is still good practice and can look beautiful... avoid treated timber Get a chuck as soon as you can afford it... it's a game changer with bowls.. And you can glue offcuts together... but you need to be able to get them flat and smooth for a good glue up I hope this helps and that you enjoy the hobby Take care...All the best.....Andy
Hi Chris... Thank you very much... I used 12.5mm silver steel round rod ... Ash 50mm x 450mm for the handle . A piece of copper pipe for the ferrule and I got a set of 3 Carbide cutters from Ebay ... Great to hear from Ontario Canada... beautiful place to live... Thank you very much for your subscription... Take care...All the best.....Andy

AWESOME creativity, love the video, very instructive, but question, why TiteBond I I I, as opposed to resin, gr8 video, and easily subscribed to your channel
Hi Clay... Thank you for your kind words... I always use wood glue ... not always Titebond 3 ... but any good quality wood glue... preferably the 10 minute stuff... it goes off in 10 mins but doesn't fully cure till 24 hrs later... I have never used resin to stick wood together... I imagine that it would be very messy and much more expensive... Thank you for your subscription and I hope that you enjoy my eclectic mix of videos... Take care...All the best.....Andy
Hi John... Methylated spirits is used to clean the surface of the wood before applying any finishes... it gets rid of dust and any grease... Take care...All the best.....Andy
I don’t see the reasoning of putting glue on both sides of a joint, just as waste of glue in my book. Try it both ways and see if it makes a difference, it won’t. That’s why you spread the glue.
Hi Robert... I can see where you are coming from on this... I must admit that I thought the same but I have had a couple of glue ups that didn't work so well and with glueing both sides I have never had a problem... I don't go crazy with the amount of glue and I don't get too much squeeze out... But that's just me and if it works for you then that's great... half the glue spreading... Take care...All the best.....Andy

Hi Dave... thank you.. I'm glad that you liked it... rain ... well if you get as much as we do then you have my sympathy.. Haha... take care...All the best.....Andy
@@AndysCornishCreations not lots of rain. But, we get more than enough wind to make up for it! Theyre puttin up wind turbines everywhere, so, at least theyre getting some purpose out of it!
@@daveb.misc.2589 ahhhh..something else in common... Cornwall is the UK home for wind turbines... they are everywhere
Well done. Nice tight glue up. Laborious is a big word for a Cornwall guy isn't it? That fire looked mighty nice. Hope you are off lock down. Looking forward to the next one. Have a blessed day!
Hi Calvin... thank you very much... Haha.. I'm from Yorkshire and we know a few big words up there... I'm not in my workshop very often without the woodburner going... Hi Andy, that is one fine looking pallet...now that you made a bowl out of it. The color combination is really nice. Nothing you would expect from a pallet.
Great job! We are getting a break from the rain....only because it is snow and ice at the moment.
Take care,
Gary
Hi Gary... thank you very much... I was surprised by the different colours... I guess when making pallets they use whatever is available at the time... ughhh rain... glad that you are getting a rest from it...we have had some ice but no snow this year... looking forward to the spring... take care...All the best.....Andy
Andy,
It is amazing that you can turn such a great looking bowl from basically free scrap pieces.
thank you so much for sharing ! 👍👍
Hi Luie... I'm glad that you liked it... I agree totally with you... it's not always about expensive hardwoods ... I rely a lot on free timber from work ...take care...All the best.....Andy
Great bowl Andy, love the variation in the differing grains. Love to Ivy 🙂
Hi Steve... I'm glad that you liked it... I was surprised by the variety of colours and grain too ... Ivy says Hi too ... take care...All the best.....Andy
I really like projects where wood is reused. You have made a fantastic bowl of relatively worthless wood that would otherwise only give heat for about an hour in a woodstove.
Well done Andy 👍
Hi Frank... I totally agree.. I love to use off cuts and free timber... although wood in the burner is still nice... I'm glad that you liked it... take care...All the best.....Andy
Really nice job Andy, turned out well lad! :-)

Hi Andy, very nice bowl! Great use of pallet wood and a super shiny finish too! Take care 👍
Hi ... Pog... thank you very much... the pallet wood worked well... I don't usually use acrylic laquer but it was the best option with this one ... take care...All the best.....Andy

Don't be put off by using construction lumber...pine etc .. it is still good practice and can look beautiful... avoid treated timber
Get a chuck as soon as you can afford it... it's a game changer with bowls..
And you can glue offcuts together... but you need to be able to get them flat and smooth for a good glue up
I hope this helps and that you enjoy the hobby
Take care...All the best.....Andy

AWESOME creativity, love the video, very instructive, but question, why TiteBond I I I, as opposed to resin, gr8 video, and easily subscribed to your channel
Hi Clay...
Thank you for your kind words...
I always use wood glue ... not always Titebond 3 ... but any good quality wood glue... preferably the 10 minute stuff... it goes off in 10 mins but doesn't fully cure till 24 hrs later...
I have never used resin to stick wood together... I imagine that it would be very messy and much more expensive...

Methylated spirits is used to clean the surface of the wood before applying any finishes... it gets rid of dust and any grease...

Great to hear!
