If you like Cali, like being close to family, like having easy access to outdoors and the beach then stay in Cali because you ain't gonna have any of that in Texas. @@Misstresbelle there are multiple reasons for the valuation of property, but supply and demand can be directly affected by politics... as it is in California. (Rent Control, Strict Zoning Regulation, City Council Approval Boards, etc....) The reason why people moved to California in the past is because it was cheap back around 1970-90, it attracts businesses and thus attracts people. The state flipped from red to blue in 92, there had been a solid foundation set for people and businesses to continue to move there. The escalation of bad policy by California in the years since is now reaching a tipping point and will destroy the state. silicon valley will be the modern day Detroit in 20-30 years, empty warehouses(offices) everywhere.

While it is true that texas has no income tax, in the end is kind of the same thing as California where is expensive. There has been so called consumption tax (VAT) proposals to replace property tax, but certain interests don't like the idea. Many large businesses currently get huge tax breaks to locate in Texas, there is a possibility that others avoid significant taxes because of special deals. In theory a VAT would eliminate the backdoor exemptions. Gov Greg Abbott said the consumption tax is the way to go in a Tweet, but that's a far as it goes. Most of the VAT proposals exempt groceries prepared at home, rent, fuel house payments from the tax to make it less regressive. No editorial writers have taken up the consumption tax, probably because no specifics of how a VAT might function in Texas have been proposed. A bill proposing a VAT was introduced in 2021, but it never got out of committee. To some the VAT is an ideal means to get large corporations to pay taxes that they now avoid, to others it is the Mark of the Beast, a potential tax on every transaction.

I moved to Austin earlier this year from Denver because I got into grad school at UT. It’s expensive here. Property taxes are high. Housing isn’t cheap, and the culture is indistinguishable from Southern California. I don’t plan on staying here. I think I’ll move back to Colorado after school. It offers a much better quality of life, in my opinion.

I'm from Chicago and I've lived in Texas for years. He's correct when he says that Austin, Texas is referred to as the "Silicon Valley of the Hill Country." There's a lot of tech jobs as well as many more companies moving from California to Austin. The price of living is more affordable and Texas does NOT have any state income taxes. Definitely better than California for sure! Texas is also more affordable than California in more ways than one. California has its problems and so does Illinois. That's why most people move to Texas or Florida. These are FACTS.

Yeah. Dave gave many bad financial advise to me. Like seriously, the house price in Austin is easily half of that in SF, maybe even triple. Maybe you make more in SF, but definitely not big enough to counter the higher cost of living, on top of crimes, homelessness, drugs problems. People dont move from beautiful & perfect weather California, to a desert with extreme heat at times Texas simply because they want a change of view. They move because it just make more economic sense lol.
