During 1968 to 1972, Bhimsenji used to sing Raag Abhogi very frequently. Besides this programme at B J Medical, I have enjoyed this beautiful Raag at Modern Highschool and Laxmi Krida Mandir, during same period. Heavenly Experience ❤
Pandit Bhimsenji's a number of Abhogi kanadas of various bandishes I've heard; and all have the beauty of its individuality . No repetition but innovation in each attempt! (Prof.Prakash Mahajan, (Jalgaon, M. S).
The comments made below by Ravindra Kelkar are very informative and appropriate to Pandit Bhimsenji and his talent in classical singing as well as his tenacity and versatility. Needless to say a rare quality added to it is his immense decency as a wonderful human being. I enjoy his music anytime during day or nights. Will we see his kind again? I doubt it.
Milindji,Thanks for sharing this. Small correction is needed. After Abhogi, Bhimsenji has sung Raga Lalit, it's not Basant. This mehfil took place in the year November 1972, in Pune & was organised by BJ Medical Arts Circle. First Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande sang, followed by Pandit Kumar Gandharva. The last item on the program was Pandit Bhimsen Joshi & he sang Abhogi, then Lalit & finally Bharavi Thumri. It was one of the most memorable program, where as usual Bhimsenji mananged to stamp his superiority over his rivals, by this fabulous singing. It needs to be noted that Bhimsenji arrived directly from Kolkatta to the music venue at around 11:30 pm & started his performance around 1 am in the night & hence sang Raga Lalit (an early morning Raga) after finishing Abhogi at around 2:30 am. Tabla accompaniment is by Vasant Acharekar & Harmonium is by Eknath Thakurdas. I have no doubt that his superb physical fitness allowed him to accomplish such feats. There are innumerable stories about the physical stamina of Bhimsenji in giving more than one performance on the same day in two different places, & more often than not, he used to travel from one place to another by driving his own car by himself. I don't think we will ever have another Bhimsen Joshi.
+Ravindra Kelkar : Interesting info, Ravindraji ! This sure must have been a unique Mehfil ! Where are the recordings of Vasantrao & Kumarji ? Speaking of Bhimsenji's heroics in travelling, there is many an anecdote! Pu La is reported to have remarked that Bhimsenji in those days spent more time in air than on ground !
Ravindra Kelkar thank you sir for your valuable inputs. It's so heartening to hear to what extent their devotion to music was. And I feel proud of our ancestors who gave such importance to physical strength that to deliver one has to be abled
I am from Ujire, a place very close to Mangalore. I still remember watching his live programme clinging to the grills of a big hall. That was not only a packed house, but also packed streets. There was close circuit TV 's on the street. My god.. that was electrifying atmosphere.
Milindji thanks for thid old rendition. I am fortunate to hear Bharat Ratna Bhimsenji for nearly thirty five years in Mumbai of which twenty five years throughout - . I am Blessed.
Great! :D The second raga is Lalit not Basant, though. Composition is "Bhavda yarda jobana", a Kirana fave. Next one is Abdul Karim's classical Bhairavi, "Jamuna ke teer" ;-)
At times the recital reminds one of Abdul Karim Khan ( as heard in vinyls). Short lalit is superb. Can't say the same about Abhogi. some ragas r suited to certain styles and temperament. Abhogi and Amir Khan r synonymous. Upload quality as heard thru airplay in Dali Oberon 7 is almost cd quality . Jamunake teer is a masterpiece of AKK and BJ is not far behind his gurus guru . Longer and full version is available. Evening well spent lstening to a legend
Milindji I request you to add exactly at what time the raag should be listened, because many people like me are there who don't know exactly at what time we should listen and loose the great pleasure and feelings of the raag, which is time releated and bioclock releated. So kindly mention as early morning, morning, noon, late noon, evening, night and late night etc.kindly divide four prahars and translate in English while giving naming or heading of raaga.Thankyou.
For your very kind information....the composition which was sung after raag abhogi is a bandish ib raag lalat ani then a thumari in bhairavi...so there is no presens of basant thumari...so that....for all beginners like me...the name should be correct...this is the humble request for uploader....your faithful...S.C.Damle.

India must have at least 20K singers and students of Music. They aren't doing enough if they aren't visiting here.
