Though that was in the final season, when they tried to definitively answer questions like, what exactly the girls were and how S1 came to be. S1 didn't have genocide, but it did, in a sparkly sparing way, have deaths, sacrifice, reluctant heroism, moral antagonists and outside of comic relief, more depth that would have been expected. I've not got around to the Crystal 'remake', but it's definitely a series that influenced a lot more than just the genre it codified and has a lot in common with the shows that seek to deconstruct those that followed it.
