What's crazy is that Lebron's 4th Championship being the lowest viewership during a time where people were forced to stay home. People obviously weren't bored enough to be bothered to watch the NBA finals lol.

They also care more about the name on the back of the jersey than the name on front. Why should I get invested in a team if the players are more excited to play with their buddies than they are to wear team colors. I don't associate players with certain teams anymore. Michael Jordan will always be remembered as a Bull. Kobe as a Laker. Iverson with the 76ers. Larry Bird with the Celtics. Shaq with the Heat. I can't do that with Kevin Durant or James Harden. I would associate Westbrook with OKC, but he has also been a half dozen teams since then. I had to consult Wikipedia like 3 times to write those last few sentences because I wasn't sure where anybody was playing. The MLB is getting bad with this too.

Precisely. Regarding your second point, I don’t know how it’s even legal for sports books to be this close to the games themselves. Sports books being allowed to advertise during the actual game opens the discussion of whether or not they and the leagues, not just nba, have some sort of unwritten agreement to influence player performance. Like if I’m fanduel, and a big chunk of users bet on a player to go over or under a certain line, I don’t want that to happen, therefore I offer the players a little kickback to remain within their projections or do the opposite entirely. People losing their bets makes the books money, which in turn makes the leagues money from advertising. It’s too powerful a symbiotic relationship and the books have absolutely no place advertising or in fanduel’s case, owning the streaming rights to people’s home teams via FDSN. It’s shady as hell and there’s absolutely more going on with it.

But that's why you're not a pro athlete and this mentality is one piece of the puzzle when it comes to the current NBA's dwindling viewership numbers. It's weak AF, basically. I think the biggest problem is the rules. 1. The NBA needs to change the charge rule to match the NFHS and NCAA rules, which determine charging based on whether the defensive player has "Legal Guarding Position" instead of the weird "who reached the spot first?" rule that makes it almost impossible to call in real time. The other rulesets are very easy to call if you understand them. 2. The refs need to call traveling, palming, and displacement CONSISTENTLY. 3. Refs need to stop tailoring their calls based on the players involved.

This is what I told everyone. The thing about Kobe was he was able to take the torch handed to him from Mike and keep the game exciting. LeBron's style and skill level was just never on par and it's why he was never actually admired the same way mj and Kobe were. Both of them had style and finesse and competed. They played defense. They didn't try to be friends with everyone in the league the way Lebron does. He's destroyed the league unfortunately. I don't think it can recover because the next generation of players are alive now and emulating this trash. Unless some new alpha on both sides comes along and completely takes over this is pretty much the end of the NBA.
I actually told my friend a decade ago when Kobe retired that the NBA will decline until it's no longer being watched much-kinda like boxing and baseball compared to what they once were. Perhaps this is the nature of sports in general though. They eventually fizzle out to some degree and always have a peak, plateau and dip. I think what wasn't really anticipated though was how quickly the NBA has dipped.
Caitlin Clark proves that drama and excitement brings in fans and that it's not necessarily basketball that's the issue rather it's the NBA and it's players.

The truth is basketball players are disconnected to the fans. Inflated wages, half asked attitudes, entitlement and now they believe they have a platform to portray their views and lecture society. Sport is sport and people are sick and tired of all the other noise. From the UK i rather watch the team from inside the NBA talk about basketball than watch a game itself. In no other sport i watch, do i prefer the analysis to the game. As a massive sports fan from UK who watches any sport on TV even lawn bowls and wheelchair curling that is a sad indictment for the NBA. The All Star game is a farce and i haven't watched one of them in over 10 years. Not mentioned in the video is the impact on competitiveness of having 82 games in the regular season. Fans, as well a players, understand that the only games that really count are in the playoffs. So, how to make each regular season game more consequential? Reduce the number of games substantially, possibly to as low as 62 per season. I can hear people saying: "Ooh, wouldn't that reduce revenues?" Of course it would, but at least players would be incentivized to try harder all the time, meaning that fan interest would rebound. If the NFL regular season had 40 games instead of 17, individual games would seem much less important. (I understand that few players could survive such a long season, but the point is still valid.) Again people might say: "But the league had 82 games per season in the 80s, 90s and the 2000s, and players tried hard then." True, but those were different times, and there's no going back. Shortening the regular season is only one of the changes that would help the NBA become more interesting.

I stopped watching around 2010. only came back for Jokic and watching him crush all the media narratives has been the only enjoyable part of the NBA for me.
    reasons I stopped watching:
    1) 2002 game 6 Lakers-Kings and other "questionable" officiating
    2) Seattle having their team stolen because a billionaire didn't want to pay for anything (hate OKC to this day and I wasn't even a Sonics fan)
    3) Lebum 'taking his talents to south beach' (that was the final straw, and again I wasn't even a Cavs fan and I was neutral on Lebron at that point)
tl;dr NBA killed the spirit of competition. until that spirit is revived, nothing else matters.

    • @ludvigwittgenstein6469
      @ludvigwittgenstein6469 29 дней назад

Hmmm, you gonna talk about the "questionable" officiating in 1992 Finals or does MJ get a pass? If you think the "questionable" officiating started in 2002 Game 6, then you weren't paying attention.
Also Kobe was BOX OFFICE. If you missed that, then you're not a real hoops fan. MJ is the undisputed GOAT but Kobe was ART and there's a reason Kobe (and Iverson, and occasionally Durant) are the only 3 players MJ seems to respect after he left the game.
Forget stats, Kobe's aesthetics were magical to watch. Kobe made me an NBA fan because his skill level was so advanced (and he DID NOT TRAVEL). It was like he made it harder on purpose JUST to show how talented he was. MJ's true heir.
Seattle getting robbed is a legit point, and I hope OKC NEVER wins anything because of that scumbag Bennett.
LeBalco killed the competitive integrity of the NBA. And they also nixed the CP3 to LA trade "because of competitive integrity" which is such an LOL moment given how LeBron, Wade and Bosh broke the CBA's rules on player collusion.

@001lui naw...real defense hasn't been played in decades. freedom of movement is garbage. the over inflated scoring is a result of the lack of defense.

@ I don’t think it’s a result of the lack of defense I think the 3pt evolution and players getting better on top of rule changes all contributed to the explosion of scoring I’ve had the pleasure of watching a few full games and see lots of great defense with great defenders like ad, and even up and comers like Dyson Daniels

@@001luinah man…. it’s the defense. The NBA has incentivized scoring, and an increase in pace. . . because they know that their core audience (younger millennials and gen z) have shorter attention spans. And they don’t really appreciate defense and fundamentals

The three is not the issue, it's hand checking. You watch games in the 90s and 2000s you got big strong athletic defenders like mike, clyde, scottie, bruce bowen, meta that are allowed to not only put theirs hands on you but literally push you around and steer you. There were great shooters in that era...certainly many that would've been better than steph...but you just cant get to spots or even get your feet set if people are allowed to push you. That's why you needed high percentage shots like the midrange and to be able to bang inside.

not that much hand checking wasn't the only thing. Giving dumb fouls to stars is also a big issue because the refs just let star's get away with a lot to boost the stats. Impeding offensive movement rule change had bigger effect on scoring then the hand check rule.

Tv contracts no longer on local broadcast

NBA could renegotiate to empower the owners - and if the players don't like it, they can walk away - owners can hire players who actually want to compete. The Players Association Union can take a hike.

The owners don't want to hire players that compete. The league is turning record profits, so they're not going to lift a finger to change anything.
