i understand the ranchers perspective, i really do. i would hate it if drug cartels used my land as a silk road for harmful substances. but the long term solution isnt 'secured borders', at least not in the way that republicans mean when they use that phrase. we need to have much more reasonable substance laws, unharmful things like weed need to be decriminalized and taxed properly, opioid addiction needs to be dealt with in new ways, not the "zero tolerance, war on drugs" way. In regards to people crossing the border as immigrants, not drug traffickers, we actually have forced more people to stay here long term with our stricter immigration policies. for one, most 'illegal immigrants' come to the us by plane, not by foot. for two, manual laborers that come to the us to work on farms used to only come seasonally, they would leave again in the off-season. but when they fear that they wont be able to come back and work that job again next year, they just stay all year and become an illegal resident. and thats when people can reasonably worry about them placing strain on the system. but if we dont make the migrant workers fear they wont be able to come back again to work the manual labor jobs (that no american citizen actually wants) then a lot of them would not be living here full time. so, i understand the fear of drug cartels, and the desire to stop them. but republican rhetoric isnt about dealing with mexican border illegal crossings because some are for drugs, its about how all mexicans are bad and criminals and so none of them should be coming here. and i dont believe for a second that the rancher in this video really fears or hates mexicans, he just hates the drug cartels, and for good reason! hes been duped by trumps larger than life personality and dynamic speech, and thinks that trump cares about what he cares about. but he doesnt! he is only using border policy as a talking point to get racists and normal conservatives alike to vote for him. that rancher hears sensible border policy when trump talks, but racists hear racist rhetoric and dog whistles. trump has truly hijacked the republican party.
