In an original documentary, The Washington Post goes behind the scenes with two newly elected women as they take their place in the 116th Congress: Deb Haaland, one of the first two Native American women to serve in Congress, and Ayanna Pressley, the first African American woman to represent Massachusetts.

    I dream of a day when every freshman class of Congress will look like this. Not just Democrats but everyone, so diverse that they take it for granted, debating the merits of their values and ideas with passion, but also negotiating in good faith and with respect for the humanity of every representative who walks those hallowed halls. It is a dream that has felt distant these past few years, but one that has been restored by the stories of these amazing women. Our country can be great for everyone. All we have to do is want it.

    I am a white male and as such have always had the most privileged place in American society based off nothing more than accident of birth. Quietly I am grateful for my unearned privilege whenever I have to interact with a police officer, or when I apply for a job. I am granted a perverse sense of confidence that I know isn't shared by all of my fellow Americans because the system works for me and always has. But my civic minded side can't be content with the injustice in this country. EVERYBODY should be celebrating this progress because equality, fair and equitable representation, cooperation, and justice is in the shared interest of every American. It's a human aspiration because injustice to anyone is injustice to everyone, injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. I am so proud of the diverse group of rookie representatives in office. It fills me with hope and pride. It is groundbreaking that we have our first Native and first Muslim representatives. The hope and joy that must belong to Native and Muslim communities, women, LGBTQ people, first and second generation Americans and every marginalized group in this country should be all of ours to share, relish, and celebrate. Progress is a tide that can't be stopped. I am grateful for the Constitution - the greatest legal document ever written - because it acknowledges that America was never perfect but gives us the means to slowly and steadily tinker away the the Great American Project, generation by generation, to build a "more perfect union". But without tireless and valiant efforts, today and throughout history, to uphold the lofty ideals of the Constitution by American patriots everywhere, it is just a piece of parchment with fancy calligraphy. Thank you for inspiring all of us, and stoking the embers of hope within us that have struggled to burn bright these past few years.

And we can start to save America from self destruction and regain our integrity as a nation of many instead of a few.
    Great video!

    • @nickz5849
      @nickz5849 5 лет назад +2

      Being a minority doesnt mean you deserve a position of power. That's the lunacy that the democratic administration can't seem to grasp.
      Just because you havent been the leading majority in this country doesnt mean we owe you a chance at it...
      Now if you want to prove yourself and show you are more qualified than say a white male who actually studied for several years in university and got several degrees, then we can talk.
      But to suggest that our country owes someone a position in government, because they come from a minority background, is utter lunacy. You dont deserve a damn thing. Earn it
      And also you said we are a nation of few. Is that because we arent more diverse?
      Let's say every single citizen and person in this country was a white American born person. That wouldnt make us a nation of few...it would just make us a nation of white Americans.

    • @housepianist
      @housepianist 5 лет назад +7

      Nick Z Deserve it? These people were elected to their positions! The voters felt that these women can do the job. They DID earn it. And many of the voters were white males! Yes, even white males are sick of other incompetent white males running this country to the ground. If the voters felt that these women couldn't do it, they would not have been elected.
      And let me set you straight on this concept of white males being "qualified" because they have several degrees, as you state. Here's the big news - education and the number of degrees in your possession has ZERO to do with running this country. Look at all the degreed white males running around pretending they know what they're doing. And your college-degreed president Trump is not even qualified to shine my shoes let alone run his businesses and this country. But I guess you don't look at his quirky, irrational and racist behavior as a divider of our country because all you see that he's a "qualified, educated, white male" which apparently is your defacto standard to all things moral and upright.
      The white man is not the standard to which all minorities and women have to aspire to. I don't need to come to the table with several college degrees and tons of experience to be your equal or to talk to you on an equal basis.
      And don't feel like you owe anyone anything. You haven't before so why are you worried about that? These women are not in their newly appointed positions of power because people like you allowed it. They deserved it because the people have spoken. That appears to be something you can't grasp.
      Please, do yourself a favor. Don't flatter yourself. Your skin color has nothing to do with your intelligence or experience, or lack thereof. It's all in your character and from what I've read from you so far, no one wants your charity. The new faces of our democracy certainly don't need it, thank you very much. They're going to do just fine.

    This is beautiful, this is the exact vision the Great Mothers showed me, one day an all female congress and senate, diverse women from every background. I know I will not live to see the full implementation of this in my lifetime, I am deeply honored to be alive to witness the beginning of the divine feminine once again taking her rightful place, to restore balance, harmony, peace, tolerance and justice and equality for all. We are witnessing the beginning of the end of the destructive age of patriarchy and it's warmongering. This is good news for men too as they are once again invited called into balance and harmony with the divine feminine to relearn compassion, empathy, fairness and tolerance. The is the beginning of the 24, 000 year sun cycle of the divine feminine energy, kundalini serpent energy, raising on the planet and I am here for it!!!

Also to those who ridicule, Belittle & Attack them, It's no use. They will continue to fight and let our ( the american people's ) voices rise like the sun. These women are hope. 💜

    It shouldn’t matter what race or gender a candidate is what should matter it their policies and their ability to represent. I’m not anti-diversity I just believe that we shouldn’t judge candidates based on the color of their skin or what’s between their legs.

    • @jaylen1213
      @jaylen1213 5 лет назад

      I agree that we shouldn't judge candidates based on race but we also must recognize the milestones achieved by groups who have never been represented in certain roles

    • @rangerking8364
      @rangerking8364 5 лет назад

      Jaylen Gordon your joking right? Just because a person has the same color skin doesn’t mean that they will represent you any better then another race. That is actually racism. Believing that one race is objectively better at representing you then any other. So many Congress people have represented these minorities in the past. I don’t know why these people claim they’ve never been represented before, they have just not by someone who is the same race.

  • @bobstevens9353
    @bobstevens9353 5 лет назад

    I would be MORE appreciative if these new Congresspeople would stand up and say that they would be happy to represent the people of their district but not for multiple years and Ithat they hope they can inspire more people to vie for office to take up the mantle and then they can move on after having done their part and then leaving the political world for good and leaving politics to someone new who will become capable/ We need to eliminate life-long politicians. Even if their good reps. Do your part and then move on, never being allowed to work OR represent anyone or any company after service to the PEOPLE!!!!
