In the Netherlands you can still vote even if you're in prison, as they see prisoners as citizens. You can't call USA a democracy when you don't let 'all' people vote.
Meanwhile, in Australia, voting is a compulsory civic duty for all Australian citizens. Also, how is American government based only upon 2 political idealogies? How is this true democracy when your view of how your country should be run and your political views are shaped and viewed through the lens of only 2 parties? That's seriously weird.
I guess if people lie and keep saying the United States is a democracy people will start to believe it. United States is a constitutional republic with democratic representatives. People never took civics I guess.
In my country there are usually 6, and when I say 6 I mean 2, since due the nature of voting there is always a strong party and everyone else chooses the second strongest to compete even if they dont like it. The voting system everywhere is terrible.

The problem now isn’t primarily a voting problem, it’s the fact that people are basically forced to pick between 2 parties/nominees that have a significant advantage in terms of funding, you had Trump and Hillary and now Trump and Biden, the nominees have gotten so bad that people vote based off of who they hate more rather than who they like more. Why do the 1% have the right to determine the nominees every single time?
Couldnt agree more... the decision should be hard because they are both very good candidates, not because they are both equally shitty and you are picking the lesser of the 2 evils.
You are talking for socialists. Americans are proud to vote for Trump. Just watch. Trump will get the most votes in history and democrat socialists minds will explode and say "vote by mail is a scam". Nobody trust celebs. Nobody. The emmys just had lowest viewers in their history. I live in Brazil. The rest of the world is constantly saying that our democracy is weak (frankly, some parts of our country say that too). But as "thrid world country" as you may held us, since the 1988 Constitution, voting is not a problem for us. It is, in fact, an obligation. There is even a fine: 3,50 BRL, which is nealy 0,7 USD. I know it sounds weird, but we have an historical vote turnout of about 80%, which means that 20% of the people do not vote at all. Since 16 years old you are eligible to vote upon registration. Women, indigenous people, iliterate people, white, black, yellow, blue or whatever can vote. We vote on sundays, which is not a work day. The schools are converted into voting pools. So you can vote very close to where you live. All you need is a government issued id with a photograph on it. I know this sound excluding for americans, but this is the most common thing in Brazil. You need one of those for everything here and is free and very easy to have one issued. Registration is needed once in your lifetime, basically. You only need to re-register if your address changes. Recently we've had a recall for all voters to go to a voting registration place to have their digitals registerd so the voting machines can only be used upon biometric recognition, reducing voter fraud (which have never been a problem, but it makes the process more reliable). In areas difficult access, the voting machines are transported even by boat to make sure people can vote. The political rights (right to vote or to be voted on) cannot be repeald. It is suspended if you are an inmate only for the time of your conviction - if your sentence is completed, you are free to vote automatically.
Thank you for putting this out. I lived in Tallahassee, Florida when 2000 happened. It was atrocious how bad voter suppression was and we had a front seat. So much of it did not hit the news cycle. I was so outraged I got in as an extra on the movie recount.
@@astronotics531 then again. it's a very liberal interpretation of "democracy". But I think they meant the oldest running / currently existing / non-interrupted
@Nick Arjomand Nobody says you are a direct democracy. A republic is a "political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them." Remember? "We, the people"? Yeah. That is not what is happening. Gerrymandering, increasing barriers for third parties, all these "shananigans" to keep eligible voters from excercising their right does not fit the definition.
@Nick Arjomand First of all, could you please show me where did I state that America was a Democracy? I said it is a democracy exporter, which you're proudly constantly proving by invading, bombing, droning, and bullying the rest of the planet. Secondly, yes my country is a racist shithole. Not gonna deny that. However, indigenous peoples are treated far better than the way you treat African Americans. You're too far from giving equal rights to everyone my dear Murican.
People saying that they have to choose between parties that they do not identify with. The problem is the voting system. In Sweden, where I am right now, there are multiple choices thanks to more people having the ability to have a voice. Please wake up America! What are YOU waiting for?
We need Majority rules, not plurality. A ranked voting system could break down the 2 party system and create a country where the maximum number of people can be heard
The problem comes down to the media. They only ever focus on two candidates: the one they really want and the one they really don’t want. The guys in the middle never get any attention.

As someone who has lived in Colorado my whole life, going somewhere to vote seems so foreign to me. I've gotten it in the mail since I was old enough to vote. Everyone should be allowed to vote from home ESPECIALLY during a pandemic.
Here are a couple major solutions to deal with this. Proportional representation; allow for proportional representation based on percentage of the full vote. Abolish the electoral system. Make the president only elected through the popular vote. Ban all lobbying and create a public fund for campaigns; any politician who's caught being offered corporate donation will be banned from holding political office for the rest of their life plus a 10,000 dollar fine.
You cannot base it on the popular vote because then states like California and New York decide who wins since they have a bigger population than most states. That would not be fair to the states that have a lower population, hence why we have the electoral system.
@@Wermified Bruh. Why does it matter where the people are. If there are more people in a certain area, why should their vote be valued less than someone who lives within a bordered area that just so happens to have less people. How does that make any sense? The president should serve the people, not the states.
@@Wermified The context in which the electoral college was made was in a time when the cities had a large propertyless population and when people without property could not vote which was again, the largest population. It was convenient for the founding fathers to have electoral college to prevent popular votes where the massive poor population voted in people who would definitely favor the poor against the rich. So you're correct when you say it wouldn't be fair to smaller populations because if the poor constantly vote out wealthy people out of their position in favor of working class candidates then that's too bad to those smaller populations. The cost of real Democracy is that if you're in the minority you will lose every single time. So if abolishing the electoral college creates a favorable result to the cities then that's something you have to deal with. Besides I'm a fan of proportional representation, that just means you can elect your local governors to your desirable party.
Here in Canada, the registration process to vote can take place on the day of the election at the polling center. All you need is proof of address and photo ID, or should you not have those things, you can have someone from your district come with you to the polls to vouch for your proof of identity. When you submit your taxes, you can check to see that you're registered to vote. We have had vote-by-mail for ages for Canadian voters submitting their ballots from overseas, and our military officials stationed abroad. We have advanced polling days to reduce the influx of people showing up on the day of the election, we have a substantial number of volunteers to collect the ballots safely, and the role of Elections Canada is to ensure the security and privacy of those ballots. See what the States have done, and how feverishly the Republican Party has been stripping the rights of American citizens from participating in the democratic republic they covet, is truly unsettling to watch. And it makes me angry that Canadians, gifted with all this infrastructure to ensure their ballots are counted, only to show up in dwindling numbers is appalling. We don't know how good we've got it here, and I'm always disappointed to hear of people (my own family included) who chose not to vote despite there being no barriers obstructing them to do so. What other people clamor for, equal representation in government, they only deign to use when they feel like it. This should be a wakeup call to anyone who idly sits back on election day and says their vote doesn't matter; or who complain about politics without even making the bare minimum effort to engage in public policy. Look how easily and how quickly that RIGHT can be stripped away from us, and why we must never allow partisanship to overrule the majority will of the people. We are too complacent nowadays, and quick to complain, but slow to act. I hope that everyone watching this realizes that this battle doesn't end at the US borders - it's everywhere that claims itself to be a fair democracy. Nothing should be taken for granted, nothing is guaranteed, all rights are earned and should be safeguarded, for they can easily be stripped away in the wrong hands.
I’m México is more or less the same way, you don’t need to be registered. You just show up at the poll center with you ID, that look for you and give you the ballot. I currently live in the US and I can’t believe a developing country like Mexico has a better voting system than the US.
@BrokenHeart - ok. so you need a photo ID. The democrats in the USA don't want to require a photo ID, and they scream "racism" if you require a photo ID. How screwed up is that?

As an Indonesian who only got democracy back in 1998, this is nuts and stupid
also when it shows the UK without automatic registration, while that is true we are bombared with letters telling us to send a thing back or log online to be registered. People come round often and tell us how many people in the house are registered etc. (and our polling places are usually open form 6am to 10 pm i believe

Even Mexico has a better voting system, didn’t expect that at all haha. You should be able to vote when you became an adult, if you can buy alcohol then you can vote for the leader of this world. No need for registration tbh
I don’t see why Americans: 1. have a low voter turnout 2. vote for a third party option especially if they are so sick of the current system. If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain. If you vote for corrupt politicians, then as George Orwell said ‘you are not a victim, you are an accomplice’, irregardless of your ideological beliefs

In the Netherlands you can still vote even if you're in prison, as they see prisoners as citizens.
You can't call USA a democracy when you don't let 'all' people vote.
Same in Germany
Meanwhile, in Australia, voting is a compulsory civic duty for all Australian citizens.
Also, how is American government based only upon 2 political idealogies? How is this true democracy when your view of how your country should be run and your political views are shaped and viewed through the lens of only 2 parties? That's seriously weird.
they want to implement your either with us or against us ideology to make these complex issues black and white when they aren't

That's because of the First Past the Post, the greatest undemocratic thing in a democracy.
The problem is Leo's name in the title
Couldnt agree more... the decision should be hard because they are both very good candidates, not because they are both equally shitty and you are picking the lesser of the 2 evils.

It's one of the things that Brazilians can be really proud about. Our voting system seems centuries ahead of the US'

Here in new York trying to even make it to the polls in November is a struggle especially for the handicapped
10,000 is to low
@@visu550 especially with the amount of money most candidates have
You cannot base it on the popular vote because then states like California and New York decide who wins since they have a bigger population than most states.
The audio of this video is a little too low. Anyone else feels the same?
This is so sad that this is the point that America is at in 2020.
Damn that’s too much to read

I could understand why prisoners dont get to vote. As long as they are serving their time they are "paying back their debt to society". But why cant felons vote? They served their time, they pay taxes, so why not vote?

I don’t see why Americans:
1. have a low voter turnout
2. vote for a third party option
