There are large Somali, Ethiopian, Eritrea, Congolese & Indian communities within Kampala. I would say the Indian Influence on Ugandan culture has a longer more complicated history. But generally Uganda is an easy place to be in as a foreigner; you can build businesses and own a home without much trouble (the ease with which foreigners “do things” in the country is somewhat problematic) I hope you share more undocumented parts of the city!
@@seawolf7610 the answers to your questions are quite long and expansive to be presented in a simple comment but let me try to highlight a few things. Well as you may or may not know, Uganda was a British colony and due to interests of exporting cash crops out of the country and other goods in, railways were built across Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. To build the railways, Indians were hired Indian coolies to be specific (you can look up the Indian coolies). They were contracted labour that happened to immigrate at the end of their work hence the considerably large Indian communities in Uganda and Kenya. There was institutionalised racial segregation by the British rulers at the time to the extent that the natives were second class citizens in their own country (that is on the negative side) and it’s from that among other things that led to the explosion of Asians by then president Idi Amin (you can read more on it here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_Asians_from_Uganda) On the bright side the Indian cuisine found its way in the Ugandan food culture, inspiring a lot of street foods like the Rolex and various renditions of the samosa to mention but a few.
@@seawolf7610 given the developing nature of the country, there is a lot of openness to investors and NGOs and charities that some people masquerade in those umbrellas only to work without paying taxes, take goods from the country at very low prices that do not in anyway support the other party, there are so many reports of unethical work conditions e.t.c e.t.c and the fact that some foreigners get to own property illegally and get away with it, practice deforestation and swamp reclamation without serious reprimand…
