  • I decided to put together a compilation of Amtrak Cascades passenger trains that are both rare and out of the ordinary. Including AMTK 463, BNSF, UP, Amtrak's low produced 8-32BWH locomotives and even Cascades that don't even have a Talgo set, you'll get it once you watch the video, Enjoy!

    Amtrak had 5 Talgo VI sets running under an FRA waiver, til the Nisqually crash. The set that crashed was originally built for Las Vegas service, then acquired by WSDoT when that fell through.
    A number of cars fr that set survived intact or with minor damage, and there may be enough equipment to put together 5 11 car sets.
    Two Talgo 8 sets were acquired by Oregon and are FRA compatible and don't need waivers.
    Big downer is seeing host railroads' units powering trains because Amtrak or WSDoT units aren't properly maintained.

    Very cool! I spent much time between 2013-2018 watching train action in several of these spots, West Tacoma and Steilicoom in particular. Quite a scenic spot for rail fans...and the BNSF guys were always friendly, with the horn blowing!! Thanks for the upload.

      Sounder never ran on the Tacoma - Nisqually section of the Seattle Sub and since the 501 derailment at DuPont, trains have been detoured on the Seattle Sub until the bypass is fully PTC capable which could be late this year. But yeah I will miss it.

      They're specially designed Spanish Talgo train sets for Amtrak Cascades service, if you're thinking they're supposed to be designed like the thumbnail shows, they are actually meant to have 2 locomotives on each side and it only had 1. This video only shows some strange consists I've seen with them, they look a lot better when the consists are normal.

      Cascades Runs between Vancouver BC and Eugene OR. UP owns the Brooklyn Sub from Eugene to Portland, BNSF owns and UP has trackage rights on the Seattle Sub from Vancouver, WA to Seattle, and only BNSF owns trackage from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. This may come across as confusing but you'll probably get it in the future.

      There's the Acela Express, a high speed (however not as fast as it's European and Asian equivalents) bullet train in the Northeast of the country, as well as a new train in Florida called Brightline which currently does not travel as fast as a typical bullet train, but it does at least looks like one. Besides that, however, and especially on the west coast where this video was shot, there is no such thing.

    When they have locomotives at both ends, are they both powered.

    • @tnrpvideo1414
      @tnrpvideo1414  6 лет назад

      Correct, unless one of the two is an NPCU (for example AMTK 90340), which is a locomotive only powered with electricity, without an engine and is powered by the unit on the other end pretty much.

    • @Greatdome99
      @Greatdome99 6 лет назад

      An NPCU is otherwise known as a "Cabbage" a control cab/baggage car--a rebuilt F40PH sans motor. Some Talgos do regularly operate with two powered locos. Though they are not needed to climb 1% Napavine Hill so much--it's all about acceleration out of stations and out of curves. Makes a big difference in timing when you have more acceleration. When you're riding the train, you can actually feel them zoom out of tighter curves.

    • @tnrpvideo1414
      @tnrpvideo1414  6 лет назад +1

      Well you are definitely not the first person to ask. Long story but basically they are electronic wayside horns that activate for oncoming trains at the McCarver St railroad crossing in Tacoma which is a quiet zone, the city made a bad decision to operate them now that there has been two deaths at the crossing since they first ran them in 2007. Here's a video of them. Look at all the rage in the comments. ruclips.net/video/ErPVfLStPus/видео.html

    That's the thing I HATE about the cascades train! It's an unusual train, with a unique paint scheme. Half the time seeing it with mis-matching colored locomotives or sized to line up with the fins AGGRAVATES ME!!!!! Even the new chargers don't quite fit!
