7:53 why is there a 8-shape if there is a circular orbit? What causes the east-west fluctuation? Should it not be just a line north-south and therefore perpendicular to the line in the following case of no tilt and elliptical orbit what causes a line east-west?
The tilt is what creates the width in the case I highlight -- indeed if a planet had an elliptical orbit and no tilt, you would see an east-west line throughout the year -- but the tilt actually factors into the "equation of time" (the difference between "local solar time" and "local mean time") and contributes to the variation in the length of a solar day through the year. This variation in day length due to our tilt is what would cause the figure 8 shape. You're right though, that the tilt would need to be very significant for us to see this effect - I probably exaggerated it in the cartoon figure!
@@spacemansteve8690 Thanks for the answer. I understand now that the tilt is the reason for the 8-shape in this case and also for the 8-shape of the analemma. And the Keppler rule just makes the northern part of the 8-shape a bit smaller in the width.
This is a great presentation. A couple points: at 8:20 you state the shape of Mars' analemma vs Earth's is due to the difference in perihelion location relative to the solstices. This could be considered true since changing that relationship on Mars could create a figure 8, but Mars' orbit is slightly MORE eccentric than Earth's which also accounts for the change in shape. In other words, making Earth's orbit more eccentric to match Mars' gives us a similar looking teardrop albeit not as skewed as on Mars (the skewing being from what you say). Also, as the equinoxes precess on Earth, the shape will change but I believe will always remain a figure 8. I'm saying these things based on an online analemma generator which I'll link to below.
I would love to know why the analemma is a perfect figure eight under the conditions of significant tilt and circular orbit. Essentially, why is it not just a line? Is this the effect on speed by the perihelion and aphelion?

During solstices Earth axis of rotation is perpendicular to its orbital plane as viewed from the Sun. During equinoxes it is tilted 23.5 degrees. During solstices Earth needs to rotate more to position the same meridian under the Sun and thus complete solar day than during the equinoxes. To visualize this draw the right triangle formed between earth’s orbital plane, axis of rotation and direction of rotation. Since Earth moves around the Sun in orbital plane direction which can be represented by hypotenuse of the triangle, but rotates on the rotation direction which is shorter than the hypotenuse orbital direction side, the Earth needs to rotate less the closer it is to equinoxes to complete solar day. This causes solar noon to drift right during solstices (longer solar day than 24 hrs) and left during equinoxes (shorter solar day than 24 hrs). Orbital eccentricity combines with this effect to make analemma non symmetrical.

So wait... If I get this right, this happens because our clocks aren't calibrated to correct for the orbital speed at any given moment, right? As in, It's not that the actual zenith moves left and right, but rather it happens because our clocks are engineered to keep an arbitrary full number, instead of showing when the sun is in the actual zenith? So when you take a photo at noon, you aren't _actually_ taking a photo at "noon" understood as "Sun being in its highest point", but rather you take it at "noon", understood as "12th o'clock"? Or is there some other mechanic that I am missing?
Our clocks represent an average solar time, not the actual solar time. That's a convenience decision, to make time management practical for us humans. If our clocks would miraculously be able to recalibrate for the true solar day, every day again (or, actually for every moment), our days would not be a constant 24 hours anymore. The Sun would then appear at an analemma that would be a straight line (matching twice the Earth's tilt angle), not in an 8-shape anymore. The angle of the analemma depends on the latitude of the location on Earth: horizontal at the equator, vertical at the Poles, and some angle at any other latitude.
