Fun fact about Gojira, they are huge environmentalists and animal activists. They donated an expensive boat, which at one point in time was the fastest boat to circle the planet if I remember right... to the anti-whale hunting group Sea Shepard which was featured on that Animal Planet show Whale Wars. Had the band's logo on the side of it. That Sea Shepard group is pretty crazy, getting in between whales and Japanese whaling ships.
David Bovey i honestly think at some points world needs environmentalist terrorism. Lawful actions don't work anymore. Now SS are forbidden by US court to do anything to Japanese whalers. To protect some species, it has gotta be made expensive and/or dangerous for states and/or companies to profit from their lives
I don’t think that ep ever saw the light of day because the hard drive the music was stor son failed. Of Blood and Salt being the only song that survived. They’ve since recovered the other songs but I don’t think the other three have ever been released.
They open up because only no talent idiots headline anymore. That's the world we live in. Pop singers can't sing. Shitty bands like metalica are popular. A band with spiritual lyrics like gojira don't get radio time.
Joseph Weber Or maybe because Metallica have been around over 35 years, have a massive legacy, and have the biggest selling metal album of all time? I really don't know...
Gojira is so freaking good at being almost what you expect. In this song, the intro baits you into thinking it'll drop like three times; in others, their riffs are just timed such that you can't predict it on your first listen.
From reddit: It's a concept album. The protagonist has to travel via astral projection to Sirius, where the aliens that gave life to earth 400,000 years ago live, to prevent the killing of the planets. The whales guide him to Sirius, Likely because of the way they migrate. This song tells the story of him searching for the whales in hope of finding the way to Sirius.
I disagree, whales are beautiful, in a terrifying way. If you've ever seen one up close and personal, the way it swims is awe inspiring, absolutely gracefully and commanding of its space. Now imagine a whale moving through space the same way it moves through water, and I think that sort of awe is a component of this song. As for space being the "ocean" well I agree, the metaphor fits, seeing as there are many similar properties, at least literary speaking.
I once read this song was about an astral projection/travel. So, the way I see it is that the guy gets in touch with these creatures that were like the spiritual guides that once let humans to evolve and create most of the amazing things we've done throughtout history. Now men are walking a path that leads to self-destruction and stuffs. So when he says the whales teach him how to fly and all that, is like they're showing him new ways to avoid the horrible fate we're constructing. Love your vids, guys! Keep'em coming! If you like, check out: Epica - Cry For The Moon, Opeth - In My Time Of Need, Behemoth - The Satanist, Ghost - Cirice, or Black Sabbath - God Is Death? Any of those'd be awesome :D
VinAnd Sori hahaha. I noticed it early on in the video and I thought you were like “let me accessorize for this song”! Turns out it was a coincidence. A good one. :)
VinAnd Sori lyrics to looking down the cross by Megadeth will surely be a fantastic reaction from you both, it’s off Megadeths 1st album from 1985 it’s raw it’s dark ahhh gotta love Dave Mustaine
Honestly PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE listen to Born In Winter by Gojira. Amazing song, and somebody has even used it as their wedding song! Sooooooooooo goooooooood, please please please please
Love your stuff guys. Gojira are a very environmentally active band especially for marine life. And Joe, the frontman of the group wrote the lyrics after he had a spiritual journey in his sleep about being guided by whales floating through the void of space. He interpreted this as a second great flood by pollution in the air (what caused the ship of man to sink) and saying that the whales survive the floods and mankind sank beneath the water and humanity sees the whales as a life boat, leading humanity to a new world to live. In native North American lore whales are carriers of souls to the spirit world.
Well it seems the only thing to do to settle this is to give the whole album From Mars to Sirius a listen all the way through! Gojira sounds like no one else, they are completely original in the music and lyrics too! I also enjoyed the unique perspectives about the lyrics, as well as the more blueish hue to the video to reflect the oceanic themes in the music.
I support this idea. This is a concept album that you have to listen start to end to understand. I've listened to it hundreds of times since I've discovered this band and I still find interesting ideas from time to time. Also, there's a website where lyrics are explained for all songs: genius dot com. It can be a good starting point. You're interpretations were great though.
This song is actually about ASTRAL PROJECTION...Most people don't know but Gojira is very spiritual in real life and in their music. There's plenty if songs where they talk about the spirit realm and such...For example the song LOW LANDS is a song about their mother that passed away. But they way they wrote the song was the journey someone goes through when they pass away. Going through a tunnel of mystery until you reach the source of all being. This song is after HEAVIEST MATTER OF THE UNIVERSE, and in Flying Whales the person astral projected into space to seek help for his dying world. The whole album is a concept album that pretty much tells a story
best interpretation for the song so far : "Flying whales are because when global warming gets so bad the sea level will rise and then from where we currently are standing we could look up and see whales above us like they're in the sky, but it is just the ocean levels having rose to levels humans were not prepared for." (seen on reddit, cudos for the original author)
So, here are my thoughts: 1st off, I LOVE the new camera and sound! Looks so crisp and the sound is so much better! Now to this video: I really enjoy the chemistry you two have when analyzing new music, even though it may not be your cup of tea. For example, Vin was so super hyped and into it and you could see that Sori was attempting to really dissect the song as the lyrics were displaying in the video. Also, I appreciate how you two relate some of the lyrics to biblical stories; which is what speaks to you-and that is exactly what song meanings truly are, they are whatever they mean to YOU. I personally, took this song to mean that mankind and all of our killing of this planet, caused a flood and now we are pretty much screwed and must find a way out and yes, I agree that the whales are “flying” because the guy in the song is underwater and is looking up and it looks like the whales are flying. That’s just my take-Back to the video, I really dig how you two go back and forth and present your ideas. I hope you took the time to read my long comment lol. Love you guys, keep it up!!
Amazing song and this band is so fucking great! great video and react. this song is part of a conceptual album. The whole album has a concept about climatic change and reverting it. It's about a character that sees it coming, so he looks for the flying whales, that teach him how to fly, then he flies to Sirius C (a star) where aliens live (the master race) which have the knowledge to save Earth from Global Warming. In the end he saves the earth ("We will see our children growing" Global Warming)
Fun fact. My son saw them at a metal festival playing this song. As soon as the really heavy part kicked in it poured rain and the mosh pit went nuts. My son was covered in mud and smiling from ear to ear.
I keep coming back to some of these reactions time and time again...been here since the first Cradle reaction...and gosh...still my favorite channel! Much love guys!
Y'all have actually graduated to my my ALL notification list. Which, by the way isn't as significant as it sounds since y'all only post twice a day generally. But even if you did post more, I'd still be down, because y'all are awesome! Just to hear what you both analyze what the meaning of the lyrics are trying to convey....worth every post. And then the parallels to both of your own personal experiences is moving, heartbreaking at times and inspirational many times and that makes it worth the time however long you both may go on about whatever. Love you both! Peace and Love unto both of you!

This is literally my favorite channel right now; just a side note, Joe (singer) has said in interviews that he kinda doesn’t even like his lyrics to make much sense. Which is totally frustrating but cool at the same time. Sorry if someone already explained this 🤘🤘
I like to see your reactions and discussion about the lyrics! Especially when have historical explanations...I am amazed by how you guys know so much about it
Yeh good thinking with the full album review! The album is ridiculously consistent and brings up some compelling comments towards space, life and the environment!
I almost never comment but had to log on to tell you both that I appreciate you having the song repeating in the background while you discuss your interpretations of it. I also enjoy your take on the lyrics. I love that it's not just emotional based and delves into literature etc.. Damn good stuff. God bless
I really liked where Vin was at around the 20 minute mark. As in, all of the land on earth is now underwater due to global catastrophe. So the POV perspective has been shifted, with the viewer now at the bottom of the ocean looking up at the "flying whales." This realigned perspective of looking "upward" will lead them to where they need to go, beyond the stars... So the whale is depicted as a creature of divine guidance.
I love your Voltaire angle it makes so much sense and there are a lot of connection points there, even if it wasn't even the intended meaning it ends up being very close to the actual meaning, to the point that if it wasn't intended I bet there was some subconscious involved in the writing. I love how you guys actually go in depth into defining what meaning you find in the lyrics, most reaction videos are just someone making faces and saying "wow crazy, awesome song" it shows your intellect. I'm checking out a bunch more of your reactions now, especially gojira because I love them so much. BTW you should sit and listen the the whole album front to back, there is a connected story here.
"I'm not a very intelligent guy." - Probably the most well versed and articulate speaking individual I've ever seen talk about the teachings of the Bible.
For some more prog recommendations In Vain - Culmination of the Enigma Persefone - Returning To The Source Orphaned Land - Mabool (The Flood) Sumac - The Deal Edge Of Sanity - Crimson Slice The Cake - The Holy Mountain (though I really suggest sitting down and listening to all of both Odysseys, it's a journey)
First off, you guys take on such a fantastic selection of music! I love Gojira and did NOT expect to see them on here. Secondly, I really enjoy watching your reactions. Vin, you heavily react to the rhythms. I enjoy seeing you get pumped on the heavy groove sections. Meanwhile, Sori seems to really get caught on certain melodies. During the heaviest part of the song, there are some odd somewhat atonal fills, and watching her face contort to the note choices is really interesting. It shows you're really listening and not just sitting there as the song passes by. You guys are great, and I really appreciate what you do.
Everyone should tweet these vids to Gojira themselves! I believe they would really appreciate you guys' reactions / discussions to their music and potentially give you a shout out like they do with Lost In Vegas.
The entire album is a concept album so this song is only a piece of the puzzle, the album also made them legends so I recommend you guys read up on it so you have a better understanding there’s no other band like Gojira for sure. Love your channel so much and how you both completely dive in and embrace this these songs. Keep it up please 😊
One of the smartest and most creative bands in metal today! Gojira takes from a lot of bands and make something purely their own. This song is great live as the intro isn't quite so long. I'm looking forward to THIS! As I am sure someone has mentioned, this is a story album.
You guys squeezed some great nuance out of this song. Excellent reaction! Gojira write truly genius music. Somebody else said it best...(to paraphrase their wise words) "they soothe my soul at the same time they melt my face".
this is how you react to metal music 40 minute long videos i fucking love IT. keep doing what you do and if you get a chance check out Inferi and the entire Artisan Era catalogue they have some of the best technical and fun metal around in recent years.
Recommended on lost in vegas and alex hefner. im not subbed to either of them but i check out some videos from them from time to time and after i saw you guys's video on behemoth i subbed on the spot. have been going through the uploads all day yesterday.
i think Vin was on point with the review, knowing Gojira is big on preserving the environment (as we should al be), so whether or it is the actual meaning of the song or not, i am feeling the explanation!
Whole song is about how water is behaving around the observer. First part is more or less travel a long way to track whales - it takes weeks or even months - so I would say that's the reason the intro is so long. Then they found it and the screeching slide sound from guitar might be kind of flushing the water out of the hole. There are turbulences because of the whales dance over the water. And flying whales name I would say is about different world above and below water. From whales perspective they kind of flying. Another thing is they spend a lot money to fund a ship that tries to protect whales from illegal hunting as they are protected species. Also maybe they were jumping above the observer.
Awww yeah here we go! Flying Whales my fave of Gojira. In terms of heaviness I think their older stuff like the song "Indians" or "Death of Me" is heavier and weirder. Check them out sometime in the The Link Alive DvD performance. It's so good!
If there was a flood on Earth like he said then the fish/whales would "fly/swim" above you, making the illusion of seeing them flying like birds in the sky. :) Also it's poetry, the whales are the biggest living animals today but still you can see them gracefully swim without any problem. Joe the singer find them really beautiful.
VinAnd Sori Maybe you have a sizeable European audience. Because it's 2:43 AM here right now in Northern Europe :p PS. Gojira gets us excited, one of the most unique and brilliant bands out there.
Gojira does that ........ They Build it!! They tease, but you know its coming, they aint gonna let you down, they will hit you heavy, they just gotta work it into the mood they wanna put you in first.
Gabriel bykhovsky, that is exactly what it is about. The band are also surfers from France. So, they are huge save the ocean advocates. This Astral projection caused the singer to go the way of save the ocean, whales in particular
Two things about what this song represents: (1) An astral projection to the Sirius star system where the whales are guides. However, the more literal meaning of this song is about the sea levels rising and the whales appearing "in the sky" because of the rising sea levels due to global warming, etc. Gojira are very heavy about environmental issues - saving whales, not killing animals/eachother, etc.
I love this band! But my 2 favorite songs by them are vacuity and wolf down the earth. Every single time I listen to those song it's like the lyrics speak to me on another level and it touches me so much. Especially with how much I care about saving earth
Really love this group. They are actually doing something original. The mechanical grind of Messugah at Doom speed added to solid growling. This band is pretty amazing.
basically the whole From mars to sirius album is based on the concept of astral projection (or out-of-body experience whatever you call it) . So theres Joe, and here he describes how those flying whales guided him in his spiritual journey through space
Can you guys check out Words Darker Than Their Wings by Alter Bridge please??the song is about a conversation the Lead singer Myles Kennedy and lead guitarist Mark Tremonti were having about faith because Myles was having a lot of questions after his dad passed away and Mark was saying don't lose faith maybe there is something out there, they sing back and fourth to each other in the song like they're having the conversation. It's an awesome song and the note Myles hits at the end will leave brown streaks in your britches lol

Yeah. It got rammed by a Japanese whaling ship. Didn’t keep track of they rebuilt it or got another one.

To protect some species, it has gotta be made expensive and/or dangerous for states and/or companies to profit from their lives
Gojira made a sea shepherd ep. The proceeds went to help that organization. Of blood and salt came off that ep.
I don’t think that ep ever saw the light of day because the hard drive the music was stor son failed. Of Blood and Salt being the only song that survived. They’ve since recovered the other songs but I don’t think the other three have ever been released.

Me: *cough* Opeth *cough*
Hahha ya vin! Cough cough!!!-Sori🤟🏻

To bid you farewell is the most patient song ever aside from Echos from Pink Floyd.
My thoughts exactly
I wouldn't call Gojira underground. They've been playing stadiums as an opening act to Metallica last year.
Ya it’s just the slot they got selected for today. Played kse earlier but we were late on gojira so we moved them up

Lol ok, your opinion on Metallica is really important to the world 😂

Sumac - The Deal
Edge Of Sanity - Crimson
Slice The Cake - The Holy Mountain (though I really suggest sitting down and listening to all of both Odysseys, it's a journey)
LUV YA!!! This song is magic.....
Drummer - drummer of this band is 1 of kind...
I hope youtube doesn't ruin this channel. I love seeing people their reactions when they hear a great song for the first time.
Haven’t heard from you in a while friend! How are you ?!
+VinAnd Sori I'm doing alright. I've been watching the videos. Caught the Killswitch one. Yeah it's mostly because of exams and volleyball.
This was awesome! Love the videos guys. You should do Time and Death and God by The Acacia Strain!
One of the smartest and most creative bands in metal today! Gojira takes from a lot of bands and make something purely their own. This song is great live as the intro isn't quite so long. I'm looking forward to THIS! As I am sure someone has mentioned, this is a story album.
The Art of Dying is one of their heaviest and most amazing songs. Though all of their songs are like that.
9:32 no kidding she been making faces throughout the entire thing. Was waiting for him to call her out on it
MORE GOJIRA PLEASE
You guys squeezed some great nuance out of this song. Excellent reaction! Gojira write truly genius music. Somebody else said it best...(to paraphrase their wise words) "they soothe my soul at the same time they melt my face".
Excellent breakdown. Thanks.
this is how you react to metal music 40 minute long videos i fucking love IT. keep doing what you do and if you get a chance check out Inferi and the entire Artisan Era catalogue they have some of the best technical and fun metal around in recent years.
Listed! How’d you find us ?!
Recommended on lost in vegas and alex hefner. im not subbed to either of them but i check out some videos from them from time to time and after i saw you guys's video on behemoth i subbed on the spot. have been going through the uploads all day yesterday.
That opening riff is candidate for riff of the century. Holey fucking groovy. Fire. Fucking fire.
i think Vin was on point with the review, knowing Gojira is big on preserving the environment (as we should al be), so whether or it is the actual meaning of the song or not, i am feeling the explanation!
My favorite Christian couple ever ...you guys are cool as Hell ... in a good way
Lol I got it !
You have a list of Christian couples which you then rank? Hmmmmmmm
Actually yes
Unearthlywhales or many of their songs from Terra Incognita, like Space Time and Love
yes and yes and yes haha
Whales are magnificent! Flying whales are perfection!
If there was a flood on Earth like he said then the fish/whales would "fly/swim" above you, making the illusion of seeing them flying like birds in the sky. :)
Also it's poetry, the whales are the biggest living animals today but still you can see them gracefully swim without any problem. Joe the singer find them really beautiful.
I was going to go to sleep for tomorrow's work. Gonna dig the foundation for my sister's summer cabin. But I guess sleep can wait.
lol soooo many ppl put off sleep to listen lol....why is that? -Sori✌🏻
VinAnd Sori Maybe you have a sizeable European audience. Because it's 2:43 AM here right now in Northern Europe :p
PS.
This Astral projection caused the singer to go the way of save the ocean, whales in particular
this sounds great in my headphones. good quality sound and video!
Vince and Storey- So long and thanks for the fish. (A perfect circle)
Listed!
Holy crap! Thanks for reacting to this awesome song guys! One of the Gojira's finest!!!!!!
Gojira is really big into activism and saving nature
Nice, the song that kicked of my Gojira journey
Another great selection of Gojira tunes: The Cell, Satan is a Lawyer, Space Time, Love, Liquid Fire, Esoteric Surgery,
Two things about what this song represents: (1) An astral projection to the Sirius star system where the whales are guides. However, the more literal meaning of this song is about the sea levels rising and the whales appearing "in the sky" because of the rising sea levels due to global warming, etc. Gojira are very heavy about environmental issues - saving whales, not killing animals/eachother, etc.
I saw this band in knotfest in candem this August 31,and they was so good
Saw them with Metallica in 2009 Atlanta. Made me a fan. Tight band. This drummer is insane. Thanks guys!
Oh my! You are really entertaining! 😂
I really love you guys, truly! ❤
This song is just so beautiful.
Really love your reactions! Keep it up guys, u rock 🤘🏻
Thx! -Sori🤘🏻
Emptyself - Just Go On
It’s a concept album that’s why. Flying Whales is just one piece of the story
Great analysis, like always!
basically the whole From mars to sirius album is based on the concept of astral projection (or out-of-body experience whatever you call it) .
If you wanna hear heavy, their song Ocean Planet has Thee heaviest riff ever written, also from this album.
This song is about the singers experience of an anagram projection, and the whale was his spirit guide
You guys should definitely react to some Trivium... The Sin and the sentence
Such a good song... musically, and lyrically
Sori got this one. "beyond the stars" is getting at the astral projection, out of body experience.
Gift of guilt live at Brixton academy!!....amazing song and lyrics!!
Vin...now yo've got it!!! Iam with you this time...and be patient with Opeth. Remember to close your eyes!!!
Love your videos. Slaughter of the Soul by At The Gates, please!
listed!!! -Sori✌🏻
That first groove....Vin is in his "happy place".
I dont know whats better: Vin lovin the heavy😁 or Sori losin her shit over not understanding the lyrics🤣
