  • Gifu Shirakawa-Go Ogimachi Winter Part I - 白川郷 - 4K Ultra HD : Declared a UNESCO world heritage site since 1995, Shirakawa-Go is one of the hottest Japanese tourist spots that is hard to miss. Located in the remote mountains of Gifu prefecture, Shirakawa-Go is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses with some as old as 250 years.
Shirakawa-Go’s most famous village, and the one featured in this video, is named Ogimachi which not only features an open air museum but also many gassho-zukuri farmhouses that are still used by villagers today.
Designed to withstand harsh winter conditions they are made entirely of wood with thatched roofs, and constructed without the use of a single nail!
Gorgeous all year long, winter gives this place a unique perspective that can not be missed offering, for a few days each year, the chance to enjoy the village at night with special illuminations.
However, and due to the overwhelming popularity of the place, the village looks more like Shibuya on a sunny Saturday afternoon or evening with literally several thousands of tourists from across the world crawling all over the place. We had the chance to visit the Ogimachi village ten years ago during the week in spring where tourists are usually busy visiting other places in Japan, and, if you can, we would highly recommend you skip Shirakawa-Go and its village during the winter and give the place a try during the less crowded seasons.

Local residents must be very happy that they got their life back and finally have peace and quiet from the Covid-19!

Some yes, others that found a way to earn more money thanks to tourism and who heavily invested in adapting for this new business, not so much. But if you take Kyoto, the vast majority of ppl are happy to not have to face bus load of Chinese people, that for sure.

Fabulous colour and resolution but the cuts are a bit jarring - did you avoid transitions to maintain the resolution?

Hi, thanks! The cuts are indeed not that great because of the difficulty I had this day to shoot descent videos (I forget my ND Filter at home) and there was SO many people (I did my best to hide that part)... And, also I do not like cross dissolve and such... I still trying to figure out what is the best transition effect for these videos.

TokyoStreetView Oh, if you don't like a simple dissolve from one scene to the other that does make it difficult. Personally I find that other types of transitions look a bit tacky if over-used. You don't have to do a slow fade; just a small overlap will reduce the jumping effect between scenes and allow the audio to make a transition as well. You did really well to show attractive scenes without the crowds, and I know how popular that place is!

If you look around (documentaries, TV shows or...) there are no transition. But I agree with you, I need to find a solution, an elegant solution to this problem.... ;-)

You can visit for free, however there is cost associated with reaching the destination as it’s very secluded from capital cities.
Train, bus/car rental... there are some parts where you pay an entry fee but mostly free to roam around the town.
