Teahupoo is one of the most powerful and deadly waves on the planet for surfing. How do you ride Tahiti's infamous surf break?
The story of Teahupoo and surfing is not a new one. The town of Teahupoo has seen surfers coming from all regions of the globe since the 1960s.
Back then, wave riders discovered that it was possible to paddle out to a reasonable surf break in only fifteen minutes.
The first surfer to claim the first ride at Teahupoo was Tahitian Thierry Vernaudon in 1985. A few local friends support his story.
The entire island is surrounded by coral atolls, making for exciting surf.
For Mike Stewart and Ben Severson - two experienced bodyboarders visiting Tahiti - this was almost the perfect wedge.
Following in the steps of Vernaudon, they returned to Hawaii from Tahiti and brought with them the word "Teahupoo."
Teahupoo's defining moment came in 1998, at the Gotcha Tahiti Pro. Teahupoo was going wild, pumping serious, breathtaking waves.
The South Pacific surf beast, affectionately nicknamed "Chopes," grabbed everyone's attention, and before long, the big wave surfing elite were arriving in Tahiti.
If you want to surf Teahupoo as a "once-in-a-lifetime" experience, first of all, don't risk your life. Pick a head-high day and start getting used to the fast and hollow drop.
Then, after ten waves and suitable confidence, go for a barreling ride to feel the power and speed of Tahiti.
Are you unsure where to sit in the line-up? No worries. Depending on the direction of the swell, there are only three take-off spots in Teahupoo.
The hardest and most challenging spot is the southern surf peak. Expect a deep take-off, with no mistakes accepted.
The southwest is the most popular one. You can also have a backdoor experience on the western elbow of Teahupoo.
The Millennium Wave
The heaviest wave in the world has claimed lives, but it has also crowned unforgettable surf champions and their epic rides.
1. From East to west, Hawaii is the widest state in the USA.
2. There are only 12 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet. A,E,I,O and U are Vowels.H,K,L,M,N,P and W are Consonants
3. Hawaii has its own time zone, The Hawaiian Stand Time. Hawaii does not have daylight savings time. Hawaii is just 2 hours behind California.
4. Hawaii has no Racial or Ethnic Majority of any kind. The Islands are made up of 34% Caucasians, 32% Japanese-Americans, 16% Filipino-American, and about 5% Chinese American. The rest of the population is made up of many smaller groups of people.
5. The island of Oahu has the world’s largest Wind Turbine. This windmill has 2 blades that span 400 feet long!
6. Hawaii produced 1/3 of the entire world's commercial Pineapples.
7. Hawaii is the only state in the USA that grows Coffee Beans.
8. At 800,000 years old, the big island is the youngest of all the islands, but was the first to be discovered by sailing Polynesians.
9. Mauna Kea holds the world’s largest Telescope and more scientific observatories in one place than anywhere else in the world.
10. Hawaii is made up of the world’s largest mountains. (Measured from the seafloor to the peak)

The Banzai Pipeline, or simply "Pipeline" or "Pipe", is a surf reef break located off Ehukai Beach Park in Pupukea of O`ahu's North Shore. A reef break is an area in the ocean where waves crash once they reach the shallows of a reef. Pipeline is notorious and famous for its huge waves breaking in shallow water just above its sharp and cavernous reef forming large, hollow and thick curls of water (a.k.a., tubes or barrels) that surfers can surf inside of and hopefully escape from using expert [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
] riding abilities. There are at least three reefs at Pipeline in progressively deeper water further out to sea that activate at various power levels applied by ocean swells.

13:52 Like the way you got a guy on the board launching about where the wave was breaking... the foam looks great in the shot. For those board riders you don't get to see coming out of the tube who kind of disappear from the shot...i was wondering what it might look like if you went under and filmed through the water toward the wave to show their board fin line through the water. You might obviously have some focal issues but i thought it might add another additional follow through perspective to the wave ride. Nice work mate!! :)
