The Japanese never had gun on stick tech. They skipped straight into Teppo matchlocks as their first firearms. Kinda weird seeing Ashigaru using a weapon they have never seen since they were outdated for hundreds of years at that point. That handcannon tho, completely historically accurate. Large bore handcannons were considered samurai tools.
I think they made that choice for variety and recognizability. Having the Ozutsu and the Ashigaru wield matchlock firearms with the same stock-shape would look too similar. But then again, that excuse I mentioned doesn't hold up as Ashigarus have their distinct Jingasa war hats modelled on them. Soooo I dunno.
@@cleeiii357 I think it's mainly to convey, at a glance, that Japanese handcannoneers are standard and not unique (confront with streltsy, musofadi gunners and janissaries, all of which wield different, more arquebus-like weapons).
Yeah. I am not too keen on their choice, even if I sort of get it. Personally, I would likely have made them carry matchlocks and make them a bit unique. Of course the Japanese were late to adopt firearms but when they did, they adopted it fast.
There's actually a castle age upgrade to change their weapon to katana. And this is really cool considering they didn't use katana in earlier ages. The upgrade gives them bonus damage against infantry. The upgrade is called Odachi.
I can see myself placing the castle of the crow next to my markets and having the treasure caravans spawn next to normal traders, specially in maps like altai.

"it seems"......Let just wait till things get put into practice. No game dev has every put out something new in multiplayer game where it wasn't seen as underpowered or overpowered. Its obvious its going to take feedback to balance.
while it seems so the cost of production upgrades and so on is whats going to hold it back... the byzantines and the aqueducts is a very easy weak point to exploit. The japanese are going to be one of the slowest civs in economy at first and with aging up since it has so much it has to manage.
