So just to be clear. She is a phenomenal rapper. She’s a Goat. She transitioned smoothly into acting, however her Star on Walk of Fame is for all her achievements especially rap. That’s why she’s the Queen!
My father named me after this phenomenal woman! People used to sing this song to me when they learned my name. I’m proud to be her namesake, Latifah Quinette!

Dad: "I've got her back" YESSS! You betta stan for the Queen! This channel is amazing and has quickly become one of my favs! Peace and love to you both!
Queen Latifah is definitely a important hip hop figure. Her song featuring Monie Love “Ladies first” was so empowering and amazing to see that militant side. Way before songs turned into money, sex, drugs.
Exactly! I’ve had this convo so many times! Rap was so many beautiful things before it got highjacked with themes of money, sex, greed, glorifying crime and degrading women. It literally felt like it happened in the blink of an eye. One day it’s uplifting music, good vibes, love, loving yourself and promoting community…then BOOM! Literally nothing was being promoted on the airwaves but discord, dissension, poverty mentality. Literally had to go underground music to find elevating hip hop. What we feed the mind and spirit is key. It was definitely highjacked.

When “Dad” said I got your back I felt that and this was the point of the song for the unity of not only women to stand up for themselves but men to stand up for the women because of a man’s action. Great breakdown
Ooh, Dad, great point on recognizing that perceived firsts or popularly celebrated firsts are often not TRULY firsts; often lesser known pioneers were the true innovators. I really appreciate you bringing this point out! And Kai, thank you for reminding us of the beautiful truth that all humanity is connected, and that if one group isn’t ok, none of us are. Not your exact words but I think I sufficiently captured the idea in paraphrasing. 😊 I see I’m a whole year late, but I’d love to see your reaction to Latifah’s beautiful, mellow singing voice!
She is also a wonderful singer. I saw her sing with a symphony orchestra recently and it was phenomenal! She also helped Naughty By Nature into the business.
When he said "I got her back" 😂. I you enjoyed this. Hopefully they explore this era when they had powerful meaningful music. MC Lyte , De La Soul. You guys have so much to review, I will be watching.
Queen Latifah put together the iconic 'Naughty by Nature' group. She was in A Tribe Called Quest's #Scenario video. She's been there practically since Hip Hop's inception.
Actually Treach and Naughty by Nature were the first artists released on Flava Unit Latifah’s record label she ran with her business partner Shakim Stuart. Yes indeed Latifah was very important to hip hop in many ways. Latifah was the first female MC mogul with her record label, cosmetics brand deals, movies and TV shows, inspiring most other female rappers then and now, like Lauryn Hill and Nicki Minaj. She and Lauryn Hill were from NJ and Lauryn cites her as one of her major influencers.
More! More! Please do "Ladies First" next! It's a song also by Queen Latifah. Check out Monie Love "It's A Shame". MC Lyte "Georgy Porgy" so many great female MCs 💜💜
I love Ladies First. I would play it for my daughter when she was about four years old. She loved it......only thing is she thought it said "Ooooh, the ladies purse, the ladies purse." Nonetheless I just let her say it.❤
Yes, Please. Monie Love is So Amazingly Talented. Listening back to her songs, I'm shocked that she's a teenager. Would definitely love to see more Ladies of Hip Hop showcased, Come through with, Eve, Foxy, Monie Love, that 'I wanna be down' Remix with Latifah, MC Lyte & YoYo would be EPIC.
My comment will always stand. Hi dad. 👋 we love you. 1st edit: Dad is the coolest. His facial expression and body language is priceless. 2. You are all of our dads...
I appreciate you guys. I know things are done these days just for clicks. But you guys seem genuine with everything. As a Dj who listens and plays all music. My first Love is and will always be Rap. I have so many favorites songs. I have no suggestions as you guys are doing an awesome job. Keep up the great work to you both.
This album is such an underrated classic. Classic song as well. UNITY, Just Another Day, It's Just The Flow (which is an interlude) and Wnki's Theme are my favorites off the album
I grew up in NY when she was 1st on the scene. I remember seeing her at a talent show. She's also a pretty damn good Jazz singer. Her whole catalog is pretty eclectic. She's a triple threat for sure. She's done tv, movies and plays. Music came first but she's an all in player in the game.
CLASSIC! Queen was teaching both men and women to be respectful. This is a Hip Hop classic and set the precedent on how highly she is revered. Next Boogie Down Productions and KRS1

The Queen is a trailblazer and a real boss !!! Not only is she a good rapper, check out her Jazz album under her name Dana Owens. She was ahead of her time rapping about women's empowerment. Also, she was the first female rapper to launch her make-up line called "Queen" and perfume fragrance. She has her own label check out one of the more commercially popular groups, Naughty by Nature's song OPP.
