I mounted mine on my enclosed car port. Easy to reach there and if theres any damage its a whole lot easier and cheaper to fix than if they were on the house.
From a novice perspective I've always wondered about solar. What's needed, the cost, how much power does it output. You wrapped it up in a nutshell for me. Now I have something to start with. Thanks!

@@Marley417 Many factors are considered, depending on the usage it will take a couple of years.
Let’s say he doesn’t have to change anything for 3 years, you’re looking at prepaying the electric bill at around $111 a month. That said, I doubt he would have to invest another $4000 in 3 years, so the overall cost would probably be lower month to month.

The key to any of these systems is charging batteries. Even you start off with just an inverter and some good batteries, you can charge them with a good generator and an appropriate RV charger like an 48 volt IOTA that can charge 4 twelve volt batteries wired in series to 48 volts. Just try to keep those batteries up, don't let them go down. You can add a good MPPT charge controller and panels later. Good luck.

Is there an easy way to look at a solar panel and know that it will work? I ask because when buying off of Facebook, you don't have that assurance of a warranty.

10 years..3.2 kilowatt system. .just 8 batteries so 225amp hours at 48 volts

i was a repo man for 30 years...so nothing to do with this type of stuff ..lol..but i just had some basic knowledge from when i was a kid about batteries and small motors and such i just learned most of this stuff with common sense and the hard questions i went to the solar forums online and ask the old pros

How long would those batteries last before needing to be replaced?
10 years
Only about 2-3 years life on those lead acid batteries with daily use. I would have taken some money saved on panels and built a diy LiFePO4 server rack kit. 10 years life for only about 50% more $ for lithium batts. Would pay for itself.
How did you make the mounts
I'd highly recommend a 48v server battery or 4-12v lithium batteries in series with a balancer.
Also lead is dead, as they say.

I’m not a fan of series Solar setups. If one panel doesn’t work, they all won’t work.
@@happyhermit476 wrong ..its only in series by twos... 2 would not put out as expected if one was at fault...each two are isolated on there own breaker

Depending wat u pay for them, wat u use for electric .u can make electric at night with l.e.d.s. u pay 150.200. Dollars a month for gas an electric 200.00 a month 2400.00 a year.
If the average household spends $200 a month in electrical bills, then it would take 20 months for this system to pay for itself. Not very long really...

So where did the panels come from if you don’t mind me asking?
YA no problem i got them from a friend who never used them. He bought them and never got his system off the ground. I think he said he paid about 2800.00 for them new and I was able to get them off him for about 30 cents a watt.
Did you get used panels? As that would be around 29 cents per watt. The cheapest with shipping anywhere in the US I have seen was 26 cents.

@@OKLAHOMAOFFGRID The last time I seen pallets at that price was about the start or so of covid. There is some company out of FL that ships a pallet for around 31 cents that I seen not long ago. Mostly finding them on FB Marketplace. I have no clue what sites are legit and most that I see wont let you see shipping unless you fill out and enter in a bunch of stuff before hand.
Though any place out of Gilber AZ always seems to have good prices on panels. Its a hell of a drive for me to there.
I have seen and heard of mentions about used panels that are unclean and untested that are far cheaper than 26 cents yet of the person I asked about what their sample rate was did not respond back. In that question I asked what type of visual check they did. I mean if you are packing panels to ship and they are missing the wires and have cracked glass then it would not be a deal. Yet still never got back to me on it. I would guess that anyone that sells used panels might have a deal on something like that.
I would be in it for 90% good panels at 10 cents a watt and those panels samples show 90% or better capacity. That would still be 12 to 13 cents per watt which is pretty good based on a $1k 250 watt panels at 10% loss panels and 90% capacity. I would buy 5k worth of panels, just to have more than enough panels on hand and to build a larger system so that over time as the panels degrade I will still have more than enough.
The only problem is building a ground mount array. We are almost done cleaning up all the trees and trash on the plot of land that I want to install the solar on which will have no shading. Building that big of an array is going to require some work.
I seen this video where this guy drives in an I beam which I think really is a guard rail post and then has some sort of braket that holds the angle and then the cross pieces are added. I think unistrut is pretty expensive these days. Used to not be. I seen an array from the road and it looked like they used all galvanized stuff. I kinda want to find someone who sells the racking along with the panels. I am not sure how they set them in place. I am thinking they pour 2 round sona tubes full of concrete and level those then attach them using either wet set method or some type of large anchors. Yet you would have to be exact on the placement of all of this.
I also found that not every place is exactly the same angle and you need both the angle for the tilt of your panels and the angle in which they face as true south is not quite where you think it is.
did you see how i ground mounted mine? I'm not looking for perfection...im just looking for what works..so far 70mhp winds no problem. used cut fence post is what used and plumbers strap tape with self tappers...check out my solar vids...all my stuff is diy and dont get me wrong some applications demand things done the so called right way but some things just need to work good enough for you...but ya...free used fence is what i used...and also i found a website san tan solar seems to have used refurbished and damaged panels for sale...but ya fb market and people selling them new in big warehouses is where i have acquired them in the past.

Can you run the AC and fridge at the same time?
the answer is yes...although i never run the ac at night time or when the sun goes down I do run the refrigerator 24/7 . the fridge pulls around 200 watts when its engaged and the ac runs around 550 watts totaling around 7 or 8 hundred watts at once which is nothing when the panels are bring in 2500 to 3000 watts in full sun....at night just so i don't put a hard strain on my batteries if i need the ac i will supplement with the generator. ..but yes the system is powerful enough to run the ac ail day in the hottest part of the day and with the fans going also it is a very comfortable cozy place to hang with a cold glass of ice tea..lol
Would love to have a setup like this on a boat, I may not need such a large battery setup though, I only need to run starlink over night, any help?
Yeah if you're trying to run starlink overnight and maybe a led light or two and that's it? If that is the case you might consider the option of one of those power banks that they call solar generator and they have flat panels that will flip open to charge or you can just put your own couple of solar panels out for it... I just did a review on one called Ithel .. if your interested let me know I'll send you the link

I may have found a solution, I only needed starlink to run an autopilot gps for my boat, but there are proprietary units which don't require Internet to run so I may not need starlink, cheers anyways!

never needed 2k watts at once....but no..it will pull from the battery if it needs more...batteries are 50x stronger than the panels initially

i would like to start an oklahoma off grid development company and an association . the company would purchase land and develope it for off grid living . the association would find reputable contractors to drill wells , cut trees , build cabins . funding would come from grants and loans . what do you think ?

Setting your Ground Rods the right way makes the difference.
Proper size wire as well. Caging is essential. EMF can be obtained following these practices.

I would use solar power solely for my ac unit
Wise choice using a low frequency, transformer based inverter charger instead of one of those cheap, short lived, low peak power, high frequency, transformerless inverter chargers.

Nice hydrogen bomb you built. Never, ever install vented LA batteries near an inverter. Especially in an enclosed space. Under both charge and discharge cycles, your batteries will produce hydrogen gas that one day will be ignited by a relay opening in your inverter and will blow your shed to pieces.

3900 plus the cost of fuel plus parts for geni devided the life of the batteries disconnect the batteries first thats the inverter gone there no cheap its not as fanntastic as it seems your always calculating what your using when family (idiots) walk round leaving lights on it you that sits in the dark.
batteries are expensive go lead acid (why) you can melt the batteries down ans re make them like the flip flop gang do and it will make it a lot cheaper also a petrol generator run it on a wood gasifier to charge the batteries.
im on gas thats now expensive for heating the fridge is gas 12v and 230v i run on gas so ive got a car plug in 230v charger and plug an electric blanket in 12v pulls 4amps i got 4 700 cca 110 ah batteries and dont go flat 1 x 240watt panel keeps them charged
