How to Grow Apricot from Seed: Apricot Seed Germination and Planting

  • Learn how to grow apricots from seed in a pot, apricot seed germination, how to crack open apricot pits or seeds and planting apricot trees from seeds as I have done in Australia. You can easily plant and grow apricot trees from seeds and transplant in to a pot at your home as I have done in Australia if you follow these simple steps. Apricot seed germination and growing apricot seedling is tricky, the seed needs correct stratification procedure. I will show you the complete process in this video to grow apricot tree from seeds, how to open apricot seeds, starting from apricot seed stratification and then germination in a paper towel, followed by growing in soil, you can also grow an apricot tree from a cutting.     I am amazed at how easily apricot seeds grow and quickly too. Mine were 3 inches at the beginning of spring and now are 1-2 ft.

    I live in Wales UK, and I haven’t seen fresh apricots for years, only the dried ones, until just the other day someone gave me 2, so I am hoping I can grow them here, our weather is mostly rain, but not too cold in winter. Thanks for your knowledge.

    I watched this video 3 weeks ago and started this process, for about two weeks and few days i wasn't patient enough to wait for a month so i just started planting the seeds that already sprouted with 2 weeks😂 in 5 seeds i got two sprouted ones, just now i planted them and i hope i get a good result

      Thanks for info. If the fruits come from cols storage in market, then the seed may germinate without any preparation.

    I live in Florida 🌴☀️ so I just put any of my seeds into a plastic container with holes 🕳 in lid.
    Within a week-2 sprouts begin. I wait to get a good sprout on seeds before planting.

    I didn't used the fridge metode i just placed them in a dark place same in papper and a plastic bag now i have 8 seeds that have successfully started making roots and sprouts. They grow really quickly but i don't know if the roots are growing as fast not wanna feed them yet to not burn the small roots will see if they are like 15 cm above soil lv will use diluted mineral fertiliser. great video Thanks

      Thanks for info. It is possible that the seeds may germinate without stratification if the fruits have come from cold storage. I will not fertilize them for 2,3 months except some very week liquid fertilizer.

    I have seedlings about the same size as yours at the end of the video, but my leaves have started getting rust coloured speckles. do you have any tips on diseases or fertilisers I should be using to remedy this?

      This may be a fungus problem. Remove the infected leaves and spray copper fungicide.

    Hello,
    How large should the sprouts be before planting in soil? I have one that is 1cm long and one that is only 4mm long so far.
    Should I plant the longer one and wait for the shorter one to grow, or give them both more time in the fridge?

      You can plant both the sprouts in soil. The longer one will grow seedling first and then the second one. Keep the seedlings on bright shade for 4-5 weeks then in morning sun for another 4 weeks. Good luck.

      Seed grown Apricots should produce fruits in 3,4 years.

    I might as well ask you as I feel the seed supplier is wrong I ordered a bunch of fruit tree seeds and they recommended to wait to stratify .y fruit seeds next February and plant them months later mine are cold hardy can't i plant them this summer after stratifying them in the fridge?

      I think, you can stratification right now. The seeds may sprout in fridge. You may plant the seeds after stratification.

      Yes if you get fresh apricot fruits. Seeds from dry fruits may not germinate.

      Probably not unless the fruit has come from cold storage. The process of putting certain seeds in fridge is known as stratification process, the seeds need to undergo in cold climate for more than 500 hours to break its dormancy period.

      @@lolbored801 Yes, wrap them in a paper, damp the paper and seal in a polythene bag and place in the fridge, NOT FREEZER. They will germinate in 1, 2 months.

      In science we had beans were were experimenting and they appeared on day 5 like the sprout so I don’t think it’s very hard to believe but I used to think the same way as u!

    Two days and counting. I stuck it in a bowl of water and it sank like a rock to stay there for the entire 20 mins. In a damp paper towel it went to be stuck in a bowl with a lid on the top shelf of my refrigerator. I hope it sprouts only I have no idea what variety the thing was as I had it a couple of months drying in the fruit (made it so much easier to crack open).

      @@GardenTricks My refrigerator went out last week for two days while it was in stratification and I just now notice a root is just barely peeking out. It is still in the refrigerator that was fixed so has been back in stratification. Only thing is my white spot that looks like it is a root is on the opposite side from where yours sprouted so on the flat side not the pointed side.

      Stratification by putting the seeds in cold environment is necessary for apricot seeds to sprout. If the fruit in the shop has come from cold storage, then the seeds may sprout without putting in fridge.

    It germinate...but when i plant it fail. I don't know what is the problem it is the soil or the temperature it high

      @@jlassijlali290 Wait for next one to germinate quite big. Then plant that in a free draining soil. First wet the soil and then plant and keep the pot in shade. Lightly water daily. The one you already potted, ensure that the soil is sandy and place it in shade. Keep that moist and wait if it grows. It may take 2,3 weeks.

      few week later .. for the people has same problem. I live in hot country and it is summer!. so i plant it in night when it is cold and it better wait for the seed to open to plant it! .... I did few try and one succeed but fail because the day was so hot and didn't put it inside. i am in my 4 try and the seed take sweet time to grow...

And besides, for an alternative method (the traditional fundamental method) you can simply wait till winter, put the whole seeds (shell included, no cracking) in a pot or in the ground, with moisture, then the seeds germinate in winter-spring. What you're showing is a drawn out production, very unnecessarily.

It makes no difference if the video is 2 or almost 5 they explained there way so respect that and do it your way instead. If you already know what to do then why bother coming on a video on how to grow them.
