- You might have have seen these weird diagrams before in circular economy or material flow analysis studies and wondered what they are and what do they mean?
These diagrams are called Sankey diagrams! They show flows, their origin and destination as well as their proportion. They enable to have a synthetic overview of the flows entering and exiting the economy and show their proportions.
Example 1 - Material Flow of the EU-27 economy
ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/s...
Example 2 - Material flow of the Global economy

Hey @Roving Waves, thanks for the great suggestion. It has been added on the list! Perhaps it might need to be split in two. Don't hesitate to subscribe not to miss them! cheers
This video is now available on our youtube channel, do check it out.
@@MetabolismofCities I watched it! And thanks for the shoutout haha, wasn't needed!
Don't hesitate. It is a pleasure to try to answer to questions and topics.
great learning. Would advisable to telle what are the units? I assume this is per year. Where do the accumulation material go?
Thanks for your comment Emmanuel! The units from the two Sankey diagrams was Gt (billion of tonnes). You are right these diagrams are a snapshot of one year. As for the accumulated materials these end up in buildings, roads, cars, all long-lived goods.
What software was this graph created in?
Hi there, we have another video showing different softwares to make Sankey diagrams (ruclips.net/video/6_7nGDhxShI/видео.html). One very easy tool you can use is Sankeymatic.
