- In this video, we go through a step by step guide on how to use Sankey Charts in Power BI. It's a very powerful visualisation tool that I don't see a lot of people using, so in this video I cover how to start using it and how to transform your data so it's ready for consumption by the Sankey Diagram.
We also touch a little bit on two new DAX functions, UNION and SUMMARIZE.

📊 WHAT IS POWER BI?
Power BI is a business analytics tool by Microsoft. It creates a working environment suited for normal users, meaning tasks such as data extraction, cleansing, analysis and storytelling; these are made easily-accessible to citizen-users, and extendable for technical users. At face value it provides visually-stunning, interactive dashboards, but it’s built on top of so much more.

Finally! Someone who actually explains this... the amount of searching if have done for this simple thing...
Been watching most of your videos to recap my power BI skills these past few days and will be very useful to my new job in March 2021. This chart is very useful in HR data! Thank you so much! Keep it up! Hoping to watch all your vids before my onboarding :D
Hi Kaye, great to hear, thanks for watching my videos! And good luck with your new job :)
I've used the Sankey Chart before, but utilizing the 'UNION' is a game changer!!!
Great to hear that, thanks for watching!
Haven't seen this diagram before, but definitely a great way of displaying the data!
This is the best summary I have seen about creating a good Sankey diagram in Power BI
Thank you finally some one who explained the why this works and not just fast type stuff
Thank you for the generosity man, appreciate it! I am guilty of fast typing sometimes, hope the video helped!
My god this is SO much easier than the methods I was trying to create all of these funky conditional columns in my primary table. This man should be named patron saint of data nerds.
The video was very helpful. The presentation made something complicated very simple. Thank you.
You're welcome, thank you for your support!
This video helped me a lot! Thanks. I'm now trying to figure out how to just add the weight values to the Sankey diagram.
That's great to hear! Let me know if it works for you! There is a weight well you can put your aggregations to, to add the weight values (or you can use summarise for better control)
@@SolutionsAbroad I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I'll play around.
Great video. Thanks
Wow. This is what I've been looking for a long time
Hope it helped!
@@SolutionsAbroad sure did 👍
thanks alot brother, this helped me alot in my project.
Very Helpful ! thanks
Great video, thanks! Is there a possibility to use tooltips for the links and the nodes?
Nicely explained, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this multilabel sankey 😊
Thank you for your informative and clear lessons. But I have one question about how to display a value and its percentage on weight at the same sankey if I have a value and percentage column on top of source and destination?
Thanks for the great content shared here!
I have a question: The create year that I have in my dataset is from 2011 till 2022 but is randomly sorted in the diagram?
How can I sort it properly?
Thanks, liked and subscribed!
Very Helpful, I was able to create the Sankey . Is there a way to create filters for Sankey? e.g I want to see the flow for a month.
Thank you in advance
Great video
Could benefit from picking up on other capabilities of the Sankey visualization - everybody seems to be focusing only on the initial data creation and then it's the end of the video
Amazing video! How can you apply a filter to change the Sankey diagram taking into consideration the structure of the table? I have tried to apply a segmented filter in the Sankey diagram but no effect takes place, do you know how to solve this?
From where can i get the dataset used here?
Hi Fernan, great video! I am trying to find the link to the dataset used. Can you please help me out with that?
Great explanation. I had used it before, but hadn't added three layers, so will check it out.
One question, is there anyway to colour the connections?
Hi there, this is a very old video! If its not in the format pane, its probably not possible
@@SolutionsAbroad all good, I got it tge colour formatting working when I walked through it again 👍
thanks
You're welcome!
How can you fix the color formatting even changing/adding layers with containing many attributes inside?
Not sure why I'm getting exess values after applying the union. The end result didn't come out as clean as yours. I"m guessing that there's some filtering going on, so I'm looking in to that. Thanks for the vid. :)
this was clean and simple. However, sankey sigmoid curve is getting enabled across two dimension at a time for a 3 dimension sankey chart. How can I enable all the curves with one dimension click
Great video. Is there a way we could use Sankey for something like a cashflow or a profit and loss for a company??
Hey Ben, great suggestion, its actually one of the most common ways you use a sankey chart for! It's been a while since I covered Sankeys so i'll have a look at covering this soon!
Is there a way to add filters / slicers? Say you have regions as part of your data set.
I think if you didn't create summary tables, you should be able to use slicers and filters.
But from memory if you add the region as a field in your summary table, you should be able to use it as a filter.
Hope that helps!
@solution abroad could you please share this practice file ?
I'm using this, but just realised that because you use COUNT(Ticket ID), there's no join to the master table which means filtering is difficult. Can you elaborate on that? Thanks - great channel.
Hi Andrew, thanks for watching! The method I used here basically creates a new isolated table from the master table, so it doesnt really work well with cross-filtering
To overcome it, you could approach it a couple different ways:
- Use the master table for Sankey (whenever possible)
- Create a dimension table that has a relationship to both your master table and the sankey table
- Create a relationship from your master table to the sankey table, which should allow you to filter your sankey table by using the data from your master table
Hope this helps!
@@SolutionsAbroad Thank you so much for the video, I got to 3 levels (3 nodes) Sankey diagram. In my case, I want to calculate From to Destination with mode of transportation, using mode of transportation as the connector between 2 SUMMARIZE rows. I also followed your advice and I created the relationship from my sankey table with my master table (in this case, I use "From" between 2 tables), I got the cross-filter to work but then instead of 3 level Sankey diagram, it was reduced to just 2 level, it only shows From and mode of transportation without destination. I can't add another relationship to add Destination either (PBI doesn't allow since there is also one connection). Could you please kindly advise how to overcome this, please? Thank you very much in advance!
What if I’m not counting tickets but simply showing a “task order number such as 2023 and order number such as 17, then the total value for the invoice such as $1,000? Do I still need to use the Count Formula? My Sankey Dax isn’t working using count because I don’t want to count the total for each invoice, just trying to show the total on the diagram. Please help!
hi, I am watching your video eagerly and they are very helpful. Just one question regarding Sankey visual, I want to create sankey same like as google created for their Alphabet Jun-2022 quarterly Income statement. But I am failed to create it. Please help me to create the sankey diagram. u can google the Income statement for google quarterly Income statement. Thanks
Can you pls upload a video on Network Navigator custom visual in power bi?
The way the data is required to be formatted destroys the tabular relationship. Question: How would I use this to filter the original dataset? I want to be able to click on something and filter the original dataset.
Does anyone happen to know how to add data labels for % of data points for each flow in the Power BI app? It's not really a useful data visualization if you can't see summary numbers at a glance without hovering over each part.
this is an error in the tool tip created , the "created_date" in the gives brief about the ticket priority , which it should not
How to sort data in ascending order?
But when we creating it with this way it is not interacting with other visuals
I applied the same method as described. Why I did not get three layers but still two layers?
I am trying to find the link to the dataset used. Can you please help me out with that?
