I babysit for a sweet girl literally right across the street, so since it’s so close and she is an angel we settled on $12.00 an hour, feels fair imo 😂
Tips from a former babysitter: -The first time I go to a new family's house, I always ask where the first aid kit/bandaids/medical stuff is. So I know where to go if something happens to me or the kid - Ask the parents what they do to discipline their kids if the kid misbehaves (time outs, take away a toy, etc.). Some kids might cry if they go in time out or just ignore you if you lecture them because it's not what they're used to. - ask what the kids' fav snack/flavour is, so if I'm making lunch/have to whip up some dinner on the fly (sometimes the pizza delivery man doesn't show up) I know what to work with. - hand wipes will be your best friend. Spills and stains are unavoidable.
I have a little sister and two nephews so about half of this is already my normal day, but also I have a little sister and two nephews so I could never be a babysitter
Definitely ask about discipline and routine. I used to baby sit for a family that used a system similar to gentle parenting (before it was a thing) and showed me how they used choices and consequences for their kids. Made it so much easier to handle their three kids, and I learned some new techniques.
@Marta Sanchez word of mouth. I lived in a small community of American/Canadian diplomats in Romania, so my parents would tell their coworkers at the US embassy that I was looking for babysitting gigs. Sorry, I don't really have any advice to give about how to get clients. I didn't really have to worry about advertising myself since my pool of clients were desperate for a relatively 'cheap' English-speaking babysitter and small enough that word of mouth was all I needed.
This lady wanted to hire me for $5 an hour. I told them minimum wage ($14 at the time) is what I would do it for. I met the kids and she still insisted on $5 an hour, but the 15 minutes I spent there talking to them and meeting the kids, I knew instantly $14/hr wouldn’t be enough. They were hell spawns of children, I would need $200/hr to pay for therapy afterwards.
I mean, you gotta look at the parents. If she's only willing to pay $5 per hour, then she's disrespectful and chances are the kids watch that behavior and mimic it.
You are a angel! I have had babysitting jobs where I made €3,50 an hour. Even now, at 22 with years of experience I get €10 an hour at 1 place and I'm over the moon with how good that pay is for my usual!
That's what I got back in 2011-2012! I didn't even expect or ask for that much, they just gave me it even though their kids were polite little angels. I bought myself an iPod Touch and felt like the coolest person ever.
When I was 12 I started babysitting. I started with $10/h for 1 kid and $2 for each additional child. I had no babysitting license but I had done a first aid class for girl guides and had been made an older sister 4 time since I was 1. I made enough to buy a $350 iPhone 4 and still have spending money on top of paying the first phone bill. I babysat a lot for that family. Most of the time I was super flexible. I charged less for families struggling income wise because honestly money was money and they didn't have much
Sounds like how much I charged when I babysat, I started around the same age too but my parents had me babysitting my siblings a little earlier. I'm the oldest of 8 so I get it lol but I used all my money on bad kid things like weed lol
@Miraa2k12 yeah I wasn't allowed to babysit alone until right before I turned 12. I probably spent most of it on food and shit from the dollar store. Didn't smoke weed until 15 and my friends smoked me up so I didn't buy any until 18
@Batman when I say smoke me up I mean someone else is providing the weed. Usually if you hang with chill stoners there's a fair trade. I smoked up my brother for a while when he had no weed, he brings weed to smoke now to make up for it. My friends doing the same. Some people don't know chill stoners and I've given them a joint and they were psyched that I would give them free weed lmao
Back in my babysitting days, I was paid $.35 in 1958 (one family had 5 kids and I was 11 yrs old!) but I finally was allowed to charge $.50/hr. Quit doing that in '63. I can't believe I was in charge of 5 children when I was so young. My mother was insistent that not only do I watch the children but also do dishes and pick up the house. I was booked for three nites a week. Most of the families I sat for were friends of my folks so there wasn't any way for me to turn down the jobs. I was also expected to watch my 3 siblings during the week. Needless to say, I never developed an overwhelming desire to have my own children.
i heard you. I'd babysit everyday after school and all day during summer because i wanted to buy store bought clothes when school started. So little money and yeah i cleaned and cooked too. i thought i hit the lottery when i got my driver's license and worked in a factory for summer job - $1.60 an hr was so much more than babysitting.
@@emmasurf8768 It's sad to say that getting work at a factory was equivalent to being freed but ya it kinda was. My first 'real' job was car-hopping. But that's another tale. 😇
I had a similar experience. I was my parents slave. I got a full time job, it was easier. They ended up stealing 90% of every dollar I ever made, but I got the hell away from them 40 hours a week. My Dad was a abusive and my mother fueled his rage, so it REALLY worked out in the end! I left home (my dad kicked me out a week before graduation) with $162 from my last paycheck. My boyfriend took me in. He kept me safe and protected for 6 years. I loved him dearly. He did chest on me, and divorced me.(we got married) He said I was too easy to get along with. I was literally a people pleasure so my dad wouldn’t hit me more. His next girlfriend got pregnant right away. She turned out to be a crazy drunk. It hurts to this day. I am married with 2 children. Parents should Be good to their children. Life is hard enough! I don’t blame you. I completely understand. I literally survived everything because I have a deep rooted love for Christ.
Same here. We waited 5 years after we were married before I even considered going off birth control and said babysitting had killed whatever maternal instinct I had coming into this world. Turns out, I am on the autism spectrum! I did know I always packed along ear plugs in my babysitting kit, especially if there was going to be a baby. I would get paid $5/hr, even if it was 6 kids. And I always did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen to ensure I'd be hired back. As soon as I was legal working age, I started working in a grocery store, but still took the occasional job and retained the housekeeping clients I had (I also did housekeeping. One of 9 kids, if you wanted something nice, you had to work for it).
My base rate is $20 an hour. An extra $5 if kids are usually disruptive or wild, for cleaning, and for pets. And if there's more than 3 kids, I charge an extra $2 per kid. I do a good job babysitting though. I'm very interactive with the kids, and I heavily limit screen time. I'm never on my phone, but keep it on me in case the parents call or text.
I'm a nanny and I make over $20/hr, but I'm also Teacher Qualified, CPR Certified, and I've taken child development classes. I work two part-time nanny jobs while going to school part-time, and I'm really loving my life rn. it takes a year to get TQ, but after that, you can bump your pay up by like $5/hr Edit: I'll also say that I've been very flexible over the years that I've worked with these families. Two years ago when their mom's hours were cut for a few months, I told them to pay me what they could, and when her hours went back up, they brought my pay back up. They were incredibly grateful and I was able to figure it out, it's important to be kind and give where you can.
How did you become teacher qualified? Just curious as it’s probably not the same as in Belgium, but I want to tutor kids up to 10th grade but to get an educational masters degree is too much for me (since you have to be in front of a class and I don’t want to do that haha)
@maloumasereel966 Before COVID I worked at a daycare for almost two years. Working at a daycare, there are different levels of teachers: aide 1 who can't be left alone with kiddos, aide 2 who can only be left alone with children for 15 minutes, and Teacher Qualified (TQ). TQ teachers don't have a time limit on how long they can be left alone with the kiddos, to become TQ, you have to work at the same daycare for a year and take some child-development courses. It's pretty straightforward, the daycare will provide the courses, or access to them, and other than that, it just takes time. I don't know how it works in Belgium, but this is the system in Oregon, USA. Tutoring kiddos doesn't have as many hoops you have to jump through, especially if the kiddos can communicate clearly. I would suggest calling a school you'd like to tutor at, and asking how you would get tutoring there. I hope this helps!
I have a degree in child development and no child care center would pay me $20/hrs. When I first graduated, I applied for an after school care job. They usually paid min. wage but since I had the degree they offered me .50/hr. more than minimum wage.
As a nanny of 7.5 years who started out babysitting, thank you! I wish I had something like this to help me out. And For all the people out there who really like babysitting and want to go full time nannying is amazing. I would recommend looking at agencies when you start out. Normally nanny’s don’t pay anything to get signed on at an agency, and it gives you access to better jobs that have had background checks done on the family as well so you know your going into a safe environment. You’ll most likely get a contract with the family to, with the contract can come benefits, pay time off and guaranteed hours etc
I'm a babysitter transitioning into nannying. I just got done babysitting an adorable kid from my hometown for probably 2 years and they no longer need me. Im having trouble finding a few family to work with but maybe an agency is the way to go.
When you turn 18 you can make some real bank getting licensed for nanny/babysitting/childcare by your local CPS. Foster families always need babysitters
To all the Americans saying $15 is more than what they make in their state - a jar of Nutella in Ontario, Canada (where this girl is from) right now is at least $7, a case of pop is at least $10, and meat at the grocery store starts at like $18 on a good day for like 3 small, thin cutlets, etc Currency varies everywhere
Yes, and there is a currency exchange, money is more valuable in America. I think CA is roughly .85 to each American dollar. So to be fair, your prices are actually cheaper than ours.
Nowhere in the lower 48 does a pack of meat cost $13 on average for 3 small pieces. I can get over 3LB of ground beef and 12-14LB of chicken drumsticks for $13. @@frozenheart7133
I babysat a couple of times for a family we knew very well (my brother was friends with their oldest child). One time I arrived there in the early evening, and the two toddlers were already in their PJ's just because the mom was trying to make it easier for me. I was basically just supposed to feed them dinner, let them play a little, and then put them to bed, but she did show me where the extra PJ's were ~just in case.~ WELL. I had to change BOTH of their PJs within the first hour because of diaper leaks (they weren't on wrong, or anything-- just too much at once!), and then later, I had to call the mom and ask where MORE PJs were because the youngest one blew out her diaper in her crib and there was poop EVERYWHERE. I cleaned her and the crib, but she was just in her diaper for a while because I didn't have any other clothes for her until I got ahold of the mom. She was very understanding, though. ^^
I started babysitting when I was 11 and my mom signed me up for an inperson babysitting course at the local hospital. Not only did it make me feel more confident and prepared in case something came up it also gave me CPR and AED certification PLUS being able to say I took the class was a good bit of peace of mind for the parents and sometimes got me the job over other sitters. I charged 15-20$ an hour in 2000-2009. See if there are similar courses offered in your area.
Sometimes you should adjust by circumstances too. I babysat for a 2 parent working household and I only asked for 7 dollars an hour for both of their kids. They both worked at Walmart making 12 dollars an hour. It's not right to charge more than they make and sometimes it's nice to just help out people who need it. I'm not saying do things for free but just think about it ❤️ A lot of women cant even work because of how expensive childcare is, sometimes childcare costs more then their paycheck. Government assistance is out there too ❤️
I was asked to babysit for my mother's coworker when I was 15 for $8 an hour. I walked in to an 8 year old smashing his cup in a temper tantrum and a 6 year old yelling at him for getting soda on her and realized I should have asked for more lmao
i currently babysit for a 4 year old and 1 year old across the street from me for £8 an hour, i think it’s s good wage they r sweet kids and their parents are really kind and give me food and drinks if i’m babysitting around lunch time or dinner. idk how people can afford to pay $20 an hour 😂😂
I did that for my sister too. 20 bucks for 8+ hours sometimes. At the height of it it was 5 kids at once, 4 under 5. I was just happy to make money at the time , but now that I will have a kid soon I'm like damn... I was getting ripped off. Lol
That's what I got too, 100 dollars a week for 40 plus hours. Granted, that's the same the mom was paying for her subsidized childcare, which her daughter got kicked out of because she claimed she was being molested. Charging 15 an hour for babysitting is just rich people and very out of touch with reality.
I feel this! $20 an 8 hour day in college for two kids, 5 days a week. I knew I was worth more, but they were family friends. I did get pissed when they said I wasn't doing enough with the kids. I did my homework while they played, but their parents wanted me to take them out on adventures. I told them that they could put their kids in summer camp and I'd increase my hours at my pt job (where i made $8 an hour) instead.
I love my babysitting family :) The kids are adorable and the mom and I have a great relationship. I also got to see the baby grow into a toddler, which is the coolest thing.
The fact that I babysit for my sister so I can just eat her food and live with her rent free is great. People mistake me for one of her kids all the time which is kinda funny because she's 8 years older than me. I do get mistaken for a teenager all the time. My niece's friends though I was 16 and her sister. I've also had a highschooler ask me what grade I'm in lol
I started out as a babysitter when I was 14, and I'm currently a part time Nanny. Working with kids can be so rewarding but also extremely nerve-wracking
A private nanny in Seattle is $20-$35/ hour. You can do a nanny share with other families to cut that down but still. If you're looking to make a lot of money as a child care provider.
I charged 15/hr when I was a babysitter in hs. Don’t know if it was the appropriate rate but I was young. I took a class in babysitting and became certified in cpr as well. Made $200 one night since they came hours later than should. But used the money for comic con.
I literally just got home from babysitting and I charge $10 for one kid and it goes up about five for everyone that I add. So the girl I just babysat for there’s only one of them but her parents even though I live close by pick me up and drop me off, so I don’t complain that they technically pay me less than my starting price because I consider it gas money. If they’re going to be hauling me back-and-forth that takes gas, gas takes money therefore, I let them pay me less. And I love the little girl.
I get paid 12.00 an hour for three relatively well behaved kids. I can’t drive and my parents don’t have time so they pick me up and drop me off. All three families I babysit have three kids and a dog and they all pay me the same. I usually let the family pick unless their plan is to pay me almost nothing. All of them decided on the same amount.
I babysat for one family in my senior year of high school and several years in college. Their oldest child was born the same day as my baby sister, and I was 16 years older than my baby sister. The parents had a standing date night that I'd babysit for them. It was a fabulous gig. I'd make dinner (usually something simple like Mac and cheese or something), we'd sit and eat, I'd feed the baby when she was big enough, give baths and put them both to bed. Then have an hour or two to hang out by myself and watch TV. The craziest thing that ever happened was that their older child who was maybe 4, kept getting up at night, so they had the doorknob turned around backwards to lock him in his room so he didn't go downstairs or anything. They only did it may be once, but it was turned around for months. One day I got locked in his room, but thankfully I had both kids with me. I had to call the parents multiple times because they had gone hiking that day and service was bad. Thankfully I got a hold of them and was able to unlock the door from inside and all was well. I actually climbed out on the roof to try to climb down the back of the house and get in through the back door, but decided I would probably die. My scariest moment babysitting, Praise God.
Babysitter here too! Best advice I could give is to NEVER assume that the kids are stupid. Kids are SMART, and if you are honest with them they will behave. If you don’t want them to do something, tell them the real reason why. If they ask why something is, explain to them. Answer their questions. Second advice : ask them to help you out. If you have to do tasks around the house and can’t play with them, just give them small tasks. They will feel useful and it usually makes them proud
Please be careful and know your families thoroughly before agreeing to babysit. I thought I knew one of the families I was babysitting and ended up in a traumatic situation. Not saying that this is going to happen just keep your eyes open.
we need more people casually talking about what their job feels like, i've worked in retail for a bit and my niece has a student job as a waitress in a restaurant and the "almost panick attack i felt during rush hour and not having the luxury of taking evening classes because of schedule" and the "her having to end work at 10pm on friday and going back to work before midday on sunday during her most stressful schoolyear" are infos you do not get before you start working and that affect the most imo what type of job you should aim for
So I'm a 24 year old babysitter/nanny. I charge 10 dollars base rate for the first child and each additional child is 5 dollars. HOWEVER, this is the rate for date nights and occasional bookings. If they are regulars. Babysitting on a regular basis and knowing you're going to. Take into account more the ages of the children. The smaller the children the more work. So a normal 20 dollars for 3 children, turns into 18 an hour and 15 for 2 turns into 12. If they're even older, maybe 2 kids turns from 15 to 10 since they just need a warm body in case something happens and can entertain themselves.
im 11, and want to babysit later in life, ive tooken a safe sitters course, and when im old enough, probably gonna get CPR certified before I start sitting.
Here’s a tip. Call yourself a “nanny” A babysitter is usually considered a side gig and so you aren’t taken as seriously. I started marketing myself as a nanny and I get paid $15-$20 per hour for full days
My expectations of a nanny are very different from a babysitter. I think it's ridiculous when a babysitter asks for 20+ an hour (we are in a low cost area) because my expectations are simply to keep the kids alive and they can watch tv/ relax if they want. A nanny I expect to have education and take the kids out and about and basically put in the same effort i put into childcare
Lmao. I lived in a small town growing up, and babysitting was high in demand, but I was the only babysitter. Used to charge 40 aud (26 USD) an hour, and people would pay it lmaoooo
Having talked with a lot of families, it's actually surprisingly easy to find a babysitting gig as a guy, a lot of parents can't find male role models (think teachers, babysitters, caretakers) for their male children. I've gotten weird looks for it before but I've definitely gotten far more appraisal and appreciation.
So cool to see this! When I babysat back in the day we'd be paid a few dollars an hour if that! My worst clients were actually family, I remember my auntie paying me $20 a night for 4-6 hours and sometimes they wouldn't show up when they said so I wouldn't end up back home until after 1am. (She lived in a multi million dollar home with maids and everything, but because I was family she knew she could get away with paying me shit and be more comfortable. Once i found out she was paying strangers $10 an hour i stopped)People always take advantage of a young girl trying to earn a buck...don't let them do that to you!
Don't forget to discount on occasion for people who need it, like a newly divorced mom going to night school or who now needs a summer babysitter (but doesn't cost her entire salary). If it's just extra money for you, and your income isn't needed as part of your family income, it's so, so worth it. The difference you make is genuinely hard to describe.
@@jadapinkett1656 you need to chill. Have some empathy, the man did just as much, if not more, to end their relationship. She didn't "keep her man" she left a loveless marriage for the chance at something better.
@@sylviayoung149 Most annoying part of @Jada Pinkett's comment is that the particular woman I was thinking of was gorgeous and fit (actually athletic -- she had attended college on a tennis scholarship), a wonderful and engaged mother, a charming hostess, etc., whose husband woke up one day, walked out on his law practice, walked out on her and the children, and started a band. I knew them as a family before/during the divorce, and while he accused her of not wanting him to quit his legal practice to start a band in his early fifties, he never accused her of anything else. She was well and truly abandoned during his mid-life crisis, as were his children.
(a long time ago now, but still) I was a teenage babysitter in Indiana and the local community center offered babysitter CPR courses! Might be worth checking out our local resources for things like this, it was really great for my confidence! (Thankfully never had to use it!)
As a current babysitter I charge usually $18-20 for one child and $23-$25 for 2 kids. Children are not easy especially when you’re putting extra care in for someone you’re not comfortable with being more your usual self around so charge what’s best for you! Don’t settle on something you don’t feel is fair, babysitting is mentally and physically exhausting so don’t let anyone take advantage of you and under pay you. More small bits of advice: - kids of any age love stickers! - I personally like to help clean up when I can but don’t feel obligated to cuz I’ve had parents take advantage of me doing extra without paying before demanding me to do chores - parents who talk to you like a worker instead of someone who cares for their kid (practically a family friend) is a big red flag so don’t be afraid or pressured to not establish boundaries - kids love learning so don’t be afraid to have them help out with cleaning or doing chores, they love helping!
Best thing I learned from my babysitting class years ago was to have a babysitting bag! I would get cheap/my old toys and bring it with me. They always ran to see what I brought since I would update it. Once kids complained to me that the babysitter that filled in for me once did not bring a bag of toys! I always recommend it!
I work for the city as a playcenter attendant. If there are no kids we can do whatever we want and still get paid, its pretty chill. A 6 month old came in today and i almost cried he was so cute
Honestly, I'm so glad I babysit around the corner from my house! The first night I babysat a new family, the kid (~1.5yo) woke up and wouldn't stop crying. After I had my dad come over, he worked his ✨father magic✨ the kid calmed down within 10 minutes. It's really helpful to have experts nearby. If you don't, please don't hesitate to call the child's parents if you can, they know their kid best and usually don't mind.
also! another positive is that the gigs usually happen at night, so they don’t interrupt anything you’d need to get done during the day (homework, gym etc) like other jobs might
omg thank you so much bc i'm 13 got all of my city's and plan on starting after i finish working on the school musical (less than a month) i'm gonna go down the rabbit hole of ur page now
i got like ~$80 for a few hours with the kids down the street. they were super chill too. I didn’t set my price, the family offered a price upfront and I (filling in for my sister bc she was busy) just said “okay”
Back in high school I babysat for a few kids with various disabilities and health issues as I was a certified EMT with experience with pediatric emergencies up to and including cardiac arrest. I would charge about 25 an hour and would provide homework help, food prep (I have celiac so I was well versed in allergy conscious food prep), and assisted in medical monitoring for the sicker kids. Thankfully none of them ever had any serious emergencies while I was there (outside of a couple seizures but that was not unexpected for that particular kid). The parents were all quite wealthy so they were comfortable paying more for that extra peace of mind but I would’ve definitely taken less for someone who couldn’t afford it.
While it's normally not a thing for guys, I kinda slithered into it watching my cousins back in my day. Kids would actually be dropped of at my parents farm and I just had a nice Saturday with a small tow who often having been in nature really before. Just did some guy stuff with them like showing them around the woods, airsoft fights (of course with protection and I only used 0.5 joule once myself), fishing etc. The older once (8-12) I actually teached how to drive an old tractor around on the farm, often got told that it was an enormous confidence boost for the kids.
When my older children were young I always used the same trusted sitter and never anyone else. I would put my children to sleep before leaving, always left the sitter snacks of her choice and gave her my bedroom and tv/ computer for the night (I’d couch crash when I got home) I also paid her $20 an hour. I treated her as well as I could because I knew with her my children were safe. If they woke up she would take them to my room and put them to sleep in my bed then carry them to their room (because that’s what I would do when they woke up) she was CPR certified and just a good person all around. Take care of those you trust with your children’s safety and well being.
I have a friend who was a babysitter, oldest of 5 siblings, cpr training, all that stuff and a good babysitter from when i was over at their house and only charged $10 compared to $14 an hour for any other babysitters in town but never got any business because "Men aren't responsible enough to be babysitters" or something which was some lady told him and I get that the feeling was the same for others based on how they talked about it.

Tips from a former babysitter:
-The first time I go to a new family's house, I always ask where the first aid kit/bandaids/medical stuff is. So I know where to go if something happens to me or the kid
- Ask the parents what they do to discipline their kids if the kid misbehaves (time outs, take away a toy, etc.).
Good tips!

Gosh! In England we averagely charge £6-£9 an hour - I’m putting moeny towards fundraising to charge a tad more than I would normally, at £8/hour.

Sounds fair, pretty close to what I paid/charged.
@@samwebb3577 If I may ask what does smoke up mean?
I started babysitting at 11 for $1.50/hr in 1975. I feel the struggle lol

I work two part-time nanny jobs while going to school part-time, and I'm really loving my life rn. it takes a year to get TQ, but after that, you can bump your pay up by like $5/hr
Edit: I'll also say that I've been very flexible over the years that I've worked with these families.

How do that
Do the families pay the babysitter or does CPS pay for the babysitter?
@@catsotorious depends on the state. The government gives them money to pay for the child’s care and provides approved babysitting/daycare resources

To all the Americans saying $15 is more than what they make in their state - a jar of Nutella in Ontario, Canada (where this girl is from) right now is at least $7, a case of pop is at least $10, and meat at the grocery store starts at like $18 on a good day for like 3 small, thin cutlets, etc
Currency varies everywhere
I live in the US and the prices for all those things are almost identical here. Inflation has gone up so much in the past few years
Yes, and there is a currency exchange, money is more valuable in America.

You are a kind soul. I have 4 kids and I know one of my babysitters would not be able to handle that. Lol.

That's what I got too, 100 dollars a week for 40 plus hours.

I was a sitter in College. The family had me cleaning up after kids and dogs. Pay was terrible. I quit after a month. Don't get taken advantage off.

More small bits of advice:
- kids of any age love stickers!
- I personally like to help clean up when I can but don’t feel obligated to cuz I’ve had parents take advantage of me doing extra without paying before demanding me to do chores
- parents who talk to you like a worker instead of someone who cares for their kid (practically a family friend) is a big red flag so don’t be afraid or pressured to not establish boundaries
- kids love learning so don’t be afraid to have them help out with cleaning or doing chores, they love helping!

If I found out my babysitter took courses online she would never come over again.

She’s so pretty
shes 16
She totally stole her clients after that
But I asked so nice 😭
I'm 12 and want to become a babysitter when I become 13 in august so this was a huge help!
Thx!
