One Must Do Interior Mod That All NC Miatas Need

- The average North American male is about 5'10", but Mazda -- in their infinite wisdom -- made the seats in the NC Miata for people under about 5'7" max. It's basically the S2000 conundrum. Getting more driver space, and, crucially, headroom, is something that has to be rectified for the taller drivers out there. Fortunately, as is the Miata way, there are several solutions out there to make the interior a bit more comfy for people of all sizes. The particular solution I went with are Jass Performance lowered seat brackets that drop the stock seat about 1.5" compared to stock.
Here's what you need to know, including some NC2 and NC3 specific tips, before buying and installing modified seat brackets on your NC MX-5.

I tell you, Mazda is one of the most underrated vehicles. They are some of the toughest and reliable cars to own.
Totally Agree! This is one of the best mod's I have done so far. I'm 6'1" and my NC3 is instantly more usable with the extra room. Here is my other top mod I am currently recommending... Get a new Cipher steering wheel. Install is simple, and plan on getting an alignment right after. BTW... Your video showing the bracket install was the first one that really shows how to complete. There was no other content online doing this, and as a result this planning for the seat lowering brackets seemed much more daunting than it actually was. Great job!
Is the Cipher Auto steering wheel significantly smaller than the OEM Mazda steering wheel? I’m 6’ 2” with similar tall man issues 😅
I did this in my NC3 as well as the “Gordy/Chicken mod”… basically at the lowest height setting the pan is touching the floor. It helped me clear my PRHT top up with a helmet on at a track day recently.
I need to do that, too.
Well worth it. Did it for the race seats, now easily pass the broomstick test.
Lots out there about how to lower. My wife is short and would dearly love it if I could raise the passenger seat about an inch. Sure wish someone would do a video on how to do that if it's even possible. Oh, I forgot to say this was a great video on lowering the seat.
To correct a small mistatement around 3 minutes in: The seat height adjustment was introduced for 2008, one year PRIOR to the NC2. I am 6'1", and my 2008 NC1 PRHT with the seat fully lowered and back gives my head about one inch of roof clearance. It's perfectly comfortable.
I'm going to order these for my NC. I'm 6' tall and it would really make a difference
6'3" here. I made brackets myself from IKEA material, lowered about 1".
Much better now.
Super effective 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Im 6ft, daily drive my NC1 and fit perfectly, I dony need any extra space, but I do like the idea of being lower to the ground
Great Vid! lol Love the ending! lol Just got a 2012 Sport. I am 5'11 so definitely want to do this mod. Thanks!
It's on my list!!! 2012 GT.
Still on my list, suspension is first.
Did this today, it is ridiculous how much it improves the driving position. Why Mazda didn't have the seat lower to start with is baffling.
At only 5'11" with thunder thighs, I've gone through the entire gambit of tall driver mods for the NC. It took me 3 years (and about $500) to get the ergonomics where I needed it.
Tall driver NC mods, In order of price/invasiveness:
1. GordyM/Chicken Mod (looked it up on miata forums, it's a few bucks in hardware, I used a skateboard bushing as a spacer)
2. Foamectomy (lots of guides for NA/NB, same general idea applies to NC)
3. Jass Seat Lowering Brackets
4. Steering wheel spacer (gets the steering wheel away from your thighs. Massive improvement in ergonomics)
Link for steering wheel spacer please?
So you didn't take the opportunity to vacuum out under your seat and foot well> Yikes!
Good video!
I’m an older 6ft 3in , another mod I did was to lower the clutch pedal about an inch . You can adjust the pushrod under the dash but you also have to move one of the clutch switches or it brings an engine light on & the cruise control doesn’t work . I did this because my knee was hitting the steering wheel during gear changes (dangerous) . Crazy Mazda didn’t increase the wheelbase a couple of inches as it would have opened the market up heaps !
I have no hope in fitting in the NA,NB or ND . Greetings from Western Australia
Being short I changed the geometry raising the at the same spot using nylon spacers.
Do they have any brackets for us shorter folks? I have an NC3 and I have it raised as much as it would go, but it would be nice to have the seat just a little bit higher. I'm 5'7...
I have an NC1 and would love to do this but I'd have to do both seats or it'd bug me every time I looked at the car. I'm told that my passenger seat can't go down more because of the occupancy sensor. Big bummer.
You mention being 6”1 inches tall. For the purposes of this video. What your inseam measurememt? Some drivers will have longer or shorter torso length which ultimately is the biggest issue for height in the car.
just got my first mx5 and I got the nc 1 as its the only one I fit in being 6'3 and 18 stone and to be honest there's as much room in this as in my old E82 drift car
Did you lose leg room or recline angle with the install?
I love my heated seats, and I am 5' 10". I imagine I'd need this mod if I tracked my NC2. With a helmet I would definitely need more head room. I'm assuming you need a helmet for Autocross.
Hey, thanks for the video.
Can u share the link the the nc2 drop rail?
Test drove an NC miata today, I actually wish the seat was a little higher 😅 I'm not exactly short at 5'8 and I felt like I struggled to see over the wheel and dash lol
Stormy Blue / tan is one of my favorite color combinations, I tried to buy one but someone beat me to it by an hour... One of the best cheap mods I know for the NC is to replace the wiper stalk with one from a RX-8 so you can adjust the speed of the intermittent wipers. It's like a $25-30 mod that takes 5 minutes... I live in Seattle so it's a necessity here. I am curious what you have in mind for race seats, as it's something I am looking at now. My big concern is making the car less comfortable for long trips.
I'm 6'2" and really need this fix. Can you comment on the 2" drop as well?
For an hour of your time, it's a must-do.
My NC1 has height adjustable seats.
Mine too. I think it started in 2008.
Hi. What are your dimensions other than 6’1”? I’m the same height, but am a lot of torso - 32 inch inseam in pants. Will I fit? Thanks!
you will fit
I m 6.3 ft.Which one have to choose? 1inch or 2.5inch?I drive daily the car for many years in original height ,but no racing.
Did you get a reply to your question?
@@butlerbobby Unfortunately no
I'm just over 5'4" so every inch in height helps so not an option for me 🙂
